Aah! Indian Chinese food. I was hooked on it in 1980s and 1990s. Since 1998 I am living abroad, first USA and now London UK. In London there are many restaurants professing Indo-chinese cuisine but nowhere can I find the star dishes from my youth such as ginger chicken, garlic chicken etc. On my visits to India, I realise that even there, Indo-Chinese restaurants have gone upmarket with exotic dishes and it is difficult to find anyone using earthy recipes of yore. We used to have a lone Indo Chinese aka Tangra restaurant in Bangalore. It was called The Chinese Restaurant on upmarket Brigade Road. That was during the 1950s. Then after the 1961 conflict with China the name was changed to Continental Restaurant. Thats where most Bangaloreans tasted our Chinese cuisine. The popular dishes were Sweet Corn Chicken Soup, Chjnese fried prawns ( somewhat like prawn tempura ) with chilli sauce, Chinese fried chicken, ( dry with a touch of soy ) Chicken fried rice and Haka noodles. I'll give and an arm and a leg for these dishes which the late Mr. James Leong dished out. He was a frugal man riding a Lambretta scooter when he could have easily afgord a car and a chauffeur.
