John Surtees...only man to win both 500cc & F1 world titles!

amazing, people think of 1950's motorcycles, and speeds of over 140 miles per hour are not what comes to mind... most modern bikes still struggle to reach those speeds, unless custom built.

My 650 cc tops out around 110 mph

      @@ethan073 I recently finished a build on a 1969 Honda CB450, and I've had her above 120 Mph.

The Manx Norton was mainly a product of steady refinement over a thirty year period. With each improvement came a slight increase in speed until by 1961, the 500 could lap the TT circuit at 100 mph when carefully tuned. McIntire, Hailwood and a couple others proved this in the Senior TT. The 350cc machine was almost as quick. Reprofiling the cams, porting the heads and raising compression ratios went a long way when using higher octane fuel that burned cooler and gave extra power. The frames were also excellent. This proved to be the winning formula.

The "steady refinement" part could be applied to IC engine tech in general ....just every year better and better mostly via racing and WAR

My first visit to the TT as a 6 year old! I can still remember the sound of his MV, sounded so different to the singles.

Slower bikes but it's all relative.
Try a bike at 120mph with the grip of a two year old and braking power of a shopping cart.

Sirs. For this to be 1958 it has to be a mixed video. It's proof is the end when you see the 3 riders who were in the top 3. It means it had to be 1960 for Surtees to have won 3 times

Just a small error at the end, commentator saying top speed was 140mph. My Dad’s 500cc Manx would get to a fraction under 150mph and the Gilera 4’s and MV Augusta’s were both faster than his Manx 👍

One of the few years they could say at the end "and there wasnt even one serious accident" Oh wait there were FOUR fatalities that year according to one list that included all classes and practice sessions Maybe that was filmed early on before all the racing was done? Plus I imagine information traveled very slowly and easy for a crash rumor to be "the rider is okay" just because someone saw him conscious one last time as they carted off to hospital? Was WAY easier to die of things that are not ultra serious today if they get to you in time....have to wonder how prepared they even were medically? On little community of Isle of man?
