- This film comes from the Smiths Instrument Collection held at the National Motor Museum. The film contains footage from the 1958 Isle of Man TT Senior (500cc) race, won by John Surtees on his MV Agusta. Other motorcycling icons featured include Geoff Duke, Bob McIntyre and Graham Walker.

It's tempting to view these older races as quaint, but they are still fricking *moving* on those fast stretches.
Desmond D Woolf of Southern Rhodesia lost his life in this very race at Barregarrow
And doing it on tyres not much bigger than you'd find on a Mountain Bike bought from Halfords today !!
I am so pleased to find this footage as i was born in July 1958 . Going over for the centenary of the Manx GP in a few weeks ... can't wait !!!

as a school boy in london in 58 i listened to the race on a crystal set , brought back so many memories
I was born in this year I loved the racing from a very young age, fantastic video.
I was there, watching from Signpost Corner. So Many names i remember and faces I recognise. Happy Days.

Great films I was lucky to see BOB MAC in 1957 and lots of TT & Manx GPS.great days Honda six no sound like I have it as ring tone. still going to Road Racing in Ireland.when not out on Velo Venom.
I was there too as a 5 year old to watch my uncle Alan Trow with the rest of the family. I was too young to really appreciate it...I wish I could go now x

Surtees the only guy to win world championships on 2 wheels and 4, I did a few laps with him at Brands at an open practice day sometime in the 80's initially he was on his Vincent grey flash and I was on my TZ bedding in a new barrel and I could stay ahead of him but then he pulled in and re-appeared on a 500 Benelli then things got a little tougher, lol.
I can almost smell the Castrol R.

Didn't hear that...in terms of speed in the 1958 Senior, I would say the Surtees MV would be around the 165mph mark as a maximum.
My father Doug Allen raced in 56/57:58 wonder if there is any footage he raced a Mondial in light weight.
Unfortunately we don't have any footage from those particular years.

Looks like a disc brake on a Beemer at 3.01??
I think it is a drum brake as there is an air scoop on the left side, could be a cooling disc often shrunk onto drums around then in an attempt to prevent brake fade.

I think Snetterton was the last old style circuit. I went in 2015 ish, you could Park your car against the fence and sit on the roof watching the classics. Really close up, now the safety folk have pushed us all back. Sad but understandable.
What are the engine differences between the bikes sounding like ww2 aircraft and the bikes sounding very refined, almost like future motogp?
The different sound was because of the engine configuration. The MV Agusta was a four-cylinder, not unlike modern MotoGP and superbikes. The Nortons were traditional single cyclinder engines.
And all the chaps watching and the mechanics will all be wearing ties, and polished shoes.

Of all the creative an excited names i gave the TT in my head...Tourist Trophy was not one..but for ireland an the brits even they had to boat in as tourist....Timed Trials is what it actual is even though thats not its name tourist trials is actually it a little mondane toughest trials would probably be more appropriate...when a multi time champian opted out.....of competing......
I think nowadays we can't imagine someone's pride who owned a KTT or a Manx at the time.
Unless you rode one and realised that a 500 single is still a fun motorcycle which will do 100mph.

@@carlnapp8673 yep. I have owned XT500, DR500, XL600 and still have a TT600. All were road registered and fun on a winding old style road. When I win the lottery I will buy a Norton Inter.

In 2020 I'd sign a driver for F1 who came from motorcycle 🏁 racing before one from karting.

Actually Surtees said he could've won a World Champ kinship on a Norton,but they wouldn't pay him. Hence him going to MV.

Surtees was lapping at over 99mph in the 1958 Senior TT (99.98mph on the second lap). Top speed would be in the region of 140mph for GP bikes of the late 50s and early 60s.

It was worst after landing after the bridge- probably caused by oil in the sump surging and splashing up the cylinder bores - and the oil control rings not coping momentarily

Why does the National Motor museum have to ruin a great historical film by splattering their Monica all over it.
We do this to deter unauthorised copying. We want to share our films and have them viewed by as many people as possible but we also need to take actions to avoid unauthorised use.
