    Check out the 'Mike the Bike' T-shirt: bitly.ws/3a98n
    Ever since Soichiro Honda visited the Isle of Man in 1954 there has been a special affinity between the Japanese marque and the TT races. In a new release from Duke Video, Honda's Golden Year TT Years DVD examines, year by year, the extraordinary success the company has enjoyed at the world-famous tournament. Soichiro Honda did much of the market research for his products, as far as travelling to races all over the world and examining the machines of his competitors.
    New! Mike Hailwood Honda Six T-shirt: bit.ly/47FbqAH
    His dedication took Honda motorcycles from a disappointing finish in their first international race in 1954 to a manufacturer's team prize in the 1959 Isle of Man TT. Quoted as saying, "only by winning at the Isle of Man TT can we open our way towards becoming a world enterprise and to selling our product internationally," these words would resonate through the years as Honda produced some of the most memorable machines and greatest champions the world would ever see on two wheels.
    The DVD stars TT top guns such as Mike Hailwood, Jim Redman, Steve Hislop, Carl Fogarty, Phil McCallen and the late, great Joey Dunlop, the film features road racing of the highest calibre. The 1967 Diamond Jubilee Senior TT shows the great battle between Hailwood and Agostini in all its glory. Original commentary from a young Murray Walker adds a touch of class, while the DVD invites fans to turn up the volume and reminisce with a 'Sounds of Honda' featuring some fearsome howls of the classic machines that have resonated through the years. (From Golden Wings magazine of the Honda Owners Club - Summer 2003 issue.)

    These were the 125 twins. The game changed radically within a couple of years when Suzuki had a 125 square 4 2-stroke, Yamaha had a V4 125 2-stroke, and Honda a 5-cylinder 125 4-stroke. Some of the most radical machinery ever to line up for a GP start. Witnessing these exotics in person must have been unforgettable.

    I was lucky enough to see Mike Hailwood ride his 6 cyl 250 Honda at Brands Hatch when he lapped everybody in the race. Must have been the 1960s but I cannot be more specific.

    In Bert Hopwoods book 'Whatever happened to the British Motorcycle Industry ', he mentions Geoff Duke testing a BSA 250 prototype (m1)? at Caldwell Park,and equalling the track record on it. So impressed with the bike,he asked BSA if he could race it at that years tt? They refused,and later cancelled the project! That sums up the mentality at the time,and the rest is history as they say😣

      Their 125cc Benly machines made their first appearance in the midwest at Dodge City, Ks on an old airport course, 1959 IIRC. They sounded very much the same as the factory racers and a local rider on one of them won the 125cc class there. Certainly got everyone's attention. I went to work for the Wichita Honda dealer a couple years later and quickly learned how well they were built and with good materials.

      All the Japanese bike companies did. Honda has always been a fantastic race competitor. Honda did the impossible in winning the Indianapolis 500 on their second time there. Maybe 1985.
      No one qualifies fast enough to make the field the first year there, and neither did Honda. The pace car that year didn't get below the white line quickly, as the driver was supposed to- I call corruption in USAC. So the leading driver, in a Honda, was forced to pass the corrupt pace car, otherwise the behind cars would gain the momentum and pass the Honda on the back straight. So the driver did what forced to do. And criminal USAC took the "official" win away from Honda- all planned I say, when Honda took the lead. But the Entire World saw USAC's dirt, and saw Honda win the Indianapolis 500 on their first time qualifying!
      And now you know another reason so many teams dropped USAC and formed CART, tho everyone knew there wasn't fan base for two sanctioning bodies, and USAC had the Ace of Indi.

      Hi Kevin. l was around at the time, although tires were very skinny by todays standards they matched the available power of the bikes very well, so much so that riders like Hailwood and Minter could lean over 50 degrees from vertical according to Dunlop. The main drawback was that there was only one treaded pattern available for all conditions. l saw Mike H racing the six at Mallory, along with Ago, Read and lvy on their works bikes. Amazing.

    • @senatorjosephmccarthy2720
      @senatorjosephmccarthy2720 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Less tire traction equals less corner speed. More equals more. Both are taken to the very limit. Less is safer. But in a race, a lot of safety is left behind.

Only if the USA and the same for the Brits . Even it was the same with the auto industry . We just didn't want to do better . As time gone by we still have not learned one dam thing . If you dont believe me just name one motorcycle company that makes bikes from the brain to final product . NOT ONE . We are lazy turds with a corrupted government and business men ( CEO ) . In Mike Duff's book (he was one of the top privateers at the time and eventually a Yamaha factory rider), the Avon tires were fantastic and the Dunlops were good once you got used to them. The bigger problem was the mechanical drum brakes which needed continual adjustment throughout the race, but still sometimes faded completely from overheating, especially on the 2-stroke bikes without engine braking, this is an area where Honda had an advantage with their 4-stroke engines.
