    I’m super stoked that the Timp is ditching those silly drain holes that let in too much dust and caused blisters and has upgraded to Vibram Megagrip. This will not only make it competitive (dare I say canabalistic ) against the Lone Peak but the Topo Athletic Pursuit too. The Hoka Speed Goat is really a totally different shoe IMO. For me the stack height and last on the Timp is a great balance of cushion and protection while still feeling reasonably nimble. I can’t wait to try them out. They will likely replace my current Olympus. We will see.

    Timp is one of the few Altra models I have never tried. I've tried one Lone peak...can't recall if it's the 4 or 5 but I enjoyed it. Favorite trail model remains the Superior. Nothing fancy but super comfortable and always gets the job done for me.

      The upper got completly destroyed much quicker than the sole, my best was 3 months and my last pair only ONE month, they got completly torn and NOT from any outside factor. Like a self destructible material, never seen in any shoe, while, suprisingly enough, the upper in the Mont Blanc, which looks pretty weak, but the appearance deceives, is still holding up after one year, a record for any Altra running shoe.

    I have a few runs in the Timp 5 and it is awesome. I have run in every iteration of Timp and this is far and away the best.
    I have a few runs in the speedgoat 5 but it was to narrow in the forefoot.
    Lone peak is ok but Timp 5 takes the crown.

    Great review! Just picked up the Timp 5, very comfortable shoe it'll have it's maiden run tomorrow. In the past I've run in the Superior, Hoka Challenger and Speedgoat. All great shoes but I do prefer Altra due to the wider toebox as I'm somewhere between a D and 2E width. On a side note Altra tend to be about a 1/2 size small so if you are a 9 try a 9.5 as you don't want your toes mashing into the front of the shoe on downhills!

    My Timp 4’s uppers tore terribly early on to the point I had to Gear Aid and Shoe Goo them to keep them together. I loved the look, fit and comfort of them but they just didn’t hold up long enough. Altra honored their guarantee and sent me the identical shoe which I am using gingerly. That said, I’m looking forward to the Timp 5s to see if all the negative feedback forced Altra to improve the product.

    I have to Lone Peak 6 (I believe) and the Timp 4. I like the Lone Peak for general use, running in the snow and on the trails. However, I don't care for the way it performs on more technical trails, I think due to the width. Even though I have a wider forefoot, it's almost too much. This is where the Timps come in. I do like these quite a bit. While I don't gravitate towards high-stack shoes, these have been great so far, especially for the way they take on more technical terrain (nothing crazy, just rocky, rooty trails). I feel like the outsole grabs a bit better on the Timps and the slightly stiffer outsole is more protective. Seeing that the 5 has a Vibram outsole is great and I look forward to trying them. Thanks for the great vids!

    I have the Timp 3 and I love them except for the lack of sharp rock protection. The trails in my area are rocky and I definitely feel the sharp ones through the Timp. Definitely the Vibram outsole should help with that, but one of the great things about Altras is the ability of almost curl your foot around obstacles which I think increases grip and confidence naturally. I hear that the stiffer Vibram sole takes away from this. So I’d like try both but I may move to the Lone Peaks. Altra Original footshape for life!

    I may be a bit weird but I really loved the Timp 1. I completed my first 100K in the shoe and had zero issues on the very tough rugged course so that may be why. I have owned all the variations of Timp and I have liked all of them but the OG Timps were the best.

    Great review and thanks! I like the lower stack height and wider fit of the Lone Peak, but having used Vibram Megagrip (on my sandals) it's so damn impressive it's really hard to settle for less. IMO Altra need to upgrade any future version of the Lone Peak to Vibram and be done with it. People who will put up with grip half as good just to save $10 or so aren't really serious anyway. They may be worried about losing sales but I think it would be the opposite.

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We agree that Altra needs to update the Lone Peak to have the Vibram outsole. One of our biggest complaints with the Lone Peak is that it's not grippy enough for technical trails.

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The Timp 5 doesn't have any support to it that helps prevent ankle rolling. The Lone Peak has a plastic heel cup that sits above the midsole to help prevent your ankle from turning. The lower stack height also makes it inherently more stable.

      Altra categorizes all of their shoes into 3 fits based on the amount of room in the toe box. Slim fit is the most narrow Altra fit, but still offers more toebox room than most standard shoes from other brands. The original fit is their widest fit in terms of toe box room. Standard would fall right in the middle, and a majority of their shoes fall into this category. We have a great video that goes into more depth here: th-cam.com/video/LFwQg6Qwle4/w-d-xo.html
