  • Deadly Roads - Afghanistan, South Africa & India (2016)
World's Most Dangerous Roads - All Episodes: • World’s Most Dangerous...
A lifeline for the numerous villages in the region, the Duong Valley road is the only link between China, Burma, and Tibet. The film crew joins locals (and a very special pig!), aboard a collective taxi to explore the region. Things start well enough; for the first 30 km, the road is paved. However, the tarmac quickly gives way to a dirt track, perched on the side of a vertiginous ravine. Landslides punctuate the drivers’ progress, and passengers frequently have to get out and dig. It’s a bumpy ride, and the pig has to be moved from his precarious position on the roof of the vehicle to join the human passengers inside.
The drivers are fearless, ready to risk life and limb to complete their journeys. We encounter a crowd waiting at the entrance of an unfinished tunnel. The roof has collapsed, and the lorries cannot get through. The travelers work for long hours inhaling dust and carbon monoxide, hoping that the vibrations from the engines will not cause the tunnel to collapse on their heads.
High up the hills, woodcutters fell the trees to make carbon, before embarking upon a back-breaking hike to the roadside where they will sell their wares. To reach their destination they must swing across a 50-meter river on a make-shift flying fox, their heavy cargo in tow. Further along, a Buddhist monk loads heavy stones on the back of a geriatric pickup truck, and an entrepreneur gambles his savings on a lead mine. The stories of the Duong Valley’s intrepid inhabitants interweave with the drama of its beautiful but unpredictable landscape.

The problem with Moloto Road is that drivers ignore all traffic rules. Speeding, reckless overtaking, drunk drivers, unroadworthy vehicles and corrupt traffic officers. There would be no accidents if people respected the rules of the road. Case in point: the taxi driver isn't even wearing a seat belt while being interviewed

    • @musa4747

I was pleasantly surprised to see Moloto Road being featured, more so because I use the road at least once a month. I believe that the road is only deadly mostly because of the ill-discipline of the road users.

In the past few years, the BRO had completely changed the state of these roads. Now they are metallic for most part of the year.
The biggest problem with roads in mountainous India is not the state of road but the drivers themselves.
Roads are still good enough to accommodate every person.
But some pay no heed to traffic rules and speed when driving here.
They alone are responsible for majority of the deaths.

I live in South Africa and have used the Moloto road a number of times.
A lot of the problems on the road are as a result of bad, idiotic drivers
Mini bus taxis speeding and breaking rules of the road Buses also speeding and not obeying rules of the road.Cases of drivers being intoxicated, under the influence of drugs or both.
In reality people ask for stricter enforcement but usually what happens is that money for KFC and a coke gets them off.

I am from South Africa, Mpumalanga and have used the R573 (Moloto) road a million times between Pretoria and KwaNdebele. I've been lucky not have involved in an Accident. The state of the Putco Buses is horrific, people also drive recklessly and with nor due regard to other road users, especially month end. I believe that even if the road is extended we will still see accidents, an alternative route to Pretoria might be a solution, it's been years since the government spoke about the Corridor (train) with no actual plan.

    • @thembadube9589
      @thembadube9589 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I fully agree with you, Tebza. A large number of South African drivers are reckless, they drive too closely behind the vehicles in front of them, they overtake where they should not, and some drive under the influence. I live in Pretoria East where, luckily, drivers generally obey the law. Whenever I visit Mamelodi (where I have many friends), I brace myself when I have to share the roads with the crazy taxi drivers we have in SA. They are the worst.
There's a saying "African solutions for African problems". Let's apply that and allow police to flog offending taxi drivers in the buttocks (without their pants on -- the offenders, that is and not the floggers) in full view of the public. Fining these buggers does not work because they simply ignore the fines. But a good lashing with a horsewhip on bare bums would make them think (assuming they have brains) twice before offending with impunity.

You need to go read your history on the region if you think "religion" is the issue. Europeans are the ones that created artificial borders after ww1 under the sykes-pikot agreement, and colonized the area. The middle east has always been united prior to this.
After that, they created puppet governments and installed dictators. USA created the Taliban in the 1980s. And Continued invasions and sanctions resulted in what we have today.
But, it's nice to ignore all that and just blame the victims.

20:40 It's not the road's fault, it's the people! Driving at night with no lights on, speeding, drunk and other drugs, using the phone, the general condition of the cars, no or bad brakes. . .
    The list is long...
You can make the road twice as wide, but that doesn't change anything

Unfortunately, I doubt anyone takes that “Bishop” in SA very seriously…he is funny as hell, though.

I think South Africa wouldn’t be on the list if it weren’t for carelessness and inconsideration of others (bus drivers) using the roads. Like the bishop said, the goal is to arrive alive, so it pays to be patient, it’s lives at stake. Goods can be replaced but lives can’t.

*_Just imagine in cold winter night you are in your bed put the heater on and order something from Amazon and Amazon committed you to deliver your order in 24 hrs. And in the next day evening you got your package from Amazon. This is the happy story but the hard truth behind the this story is truck driver take your package from Amazon warehouse to you at the cold winter night at -40°c and travel from 100's to 1000's km to deliver your order. This is why "Truck Drivers are the wheels of nation, if they stop whole nation will Stop"._*
