For Atlanta Frocktails 2024, I wanted to make a vintage dress for the theme Secret Garden, however, as per usual I wanted until the absolute last minute. So I dug into my "project pile" for this sewing vlog, and dug out this glorious 1950's vintage fabric and a true 1950's vintage PLUS SIZE sewing pattern. But even though the pattern was plus size, I still had to size up my vintage pattern by 1/2" on either side of the bodice pieces. Come with me to see the journey that was making this vintage dress.
Pattern: Marian Martin 9273, size 24.5
    Fabric: vintage 1950's cotton

Losing a thing. Then finding the thing. Then thinking you put the thing away. Then realizing you didn't. Then tearing the world apart to find the thing. But no luck. Then making a new thing. This is exactly what my ADHD life looks like.

Beautiful 💖. Hint: I ditched the black sharpie that I would secretly use for washable crayola markers. Love the color options and cheaper then the pencils or markers from the fabric store.

Stephani darling even though I’m not a vintage so I do enjoy you. I always lose collar stands. I don’t care if I’ve laid the pattern out and cut out the piece. I lose it. Drive me effing crazy. I have a baggie full of different pockets that I use wherever I like and I never lose that! And I’ve been sewing since I was nine and I’m 74 and I still make mistakes and I just wear my clothing because they’re still better made than what you can buy in the store even the high-end store so keep at it. I love what you do you’re so much.

I love your “warning labels”. I may have to steal your method. I was glad to see you print “Don’t lose” on your pock piece. I had just been thinking I would write all over it. I sew in chaos, too. My tiny little ADd brain loses the most important things, frequently.

I need a sewing helper, but live alone and don't have one. My mother was great at sewing, but she has been gone for 5 years now. My son and grandson are not interested in such things. I found the same Bernina sewing machine on Facebook Marketplace for $175.00. It didn't have the embroidery module so I found one that had never been taken out of the box for $100.00. The machine came in a Horn cabinet. The son had no idea what he had and he was clearing out his mother's estate. He threw in 3 boxes of beautiful fabric and a box of 64 spools of unused embroidery thread. In other words it was the estate sale that kept on giving. When I heard the boot up sound, I grinned from ear to ear since I know you love a bargain. Have fun at Frocktails. I can't wait to get well enough to go to one of your events and meet you in person.

I NEED to see that skirt!! You totally don't understand!!!! I have a -er-little problem. I have a slight --uhm -- I -- ah -- collect, (yeah, that's it!) I COLLECT unique skirt patterns. I totally don't care if you put it on another bodice top or just make it as a skirt -- I NEED TO SEE IT!!!!!!

You can even get creative with it (complimentary color block strips, anyone?).
Not having quite enough fabric shouldn't stop you from giving your garment its best life.

You will then put it some place for safekeeping where you tell yourself that you will absolutely remember the location. The next day, you will have no idea what you did with it and it will be gone until you find it again at a time when you absolutely do not need it...........ask me how I know.

It is so heart stopping to watch sewers rip their fabric instead of cutting. Especially vintage fabric. All of the detailed work and effort put into this dress could be ruined by ripping the fabric. It distorts the grain and weakens the fabric. Seriously, I have an anxiety moment.

Why am I surprised that a vintage sewist has a modern machine with a screen???
I do modern and improv and vintage sewing (more vintage fabric than patterns, and my fave vintage patterns are the half sizes from the very early 1970’s)… but I adore vintage machines. My favorite only makes straight stitches forward and reverse.
But yet a friend gave me a Viking, which has a very basic screen for stitch selection and size. And I can’t tell you how much I love the feature where you push a button, and it essentially ties a knot at the beginning or end of seam. what does it so smoothly or quietly but it’s really got a couple features that are lovely.

Like the dress. A few questions.1) it’s the mannequin you used a plus size mannequin? And if so, where did you get it? 2) have you ever done a video on how you enlarge a vintage pattern? 3) what is a Frocktails .I have never heard of that before.

are you wearing a sunday scratchy half slip under that dress. many sundays were spent with meshy itchy slips under my sunday dresses. circa 1950s, sit still, said mom, it itches said little Robin, hold still you look like your bottom itches, "it does" said little Robin, Mom, two days later, I lines all of your four level mesh stiff itchy slips with my old slips. :" Thanks mom.

12:35 After seeing you in this dress in the Missing Pattern Pieces video, I came here to watch you make it. I paused here, because I'm just so enjoying this, and wanted to say so. 😍😁 I need to start watching you more often. I've been subscribed for at least a year, if not two, so there's no excuse. 🤭 Back to the video...

Excellent twirling skirt and a great color for you. The two most important mantras all makers must embrace: 1. I can do hard things. 2. There IS a solution.

Loved watching you make this dress. I've also recently been braving cutting into more of my good fabric. Like you say, it's so nice when you make it up and love the end result. ❤

I know some women from the sewing guild who are going. I wish I could (out of my budget) I wish I could meet you when you're in town. (edit: well. now that I've watched the videos, maybe next year.)

There's a pattern that I recommend which has instructions for adding a pocket into a side seam that has a zipper closure. I've used this method now on skirts, dresses AND trousers. Look for the Chore Skirt from Decades of Style.

I now have my favorite pocket piece under a magnet on my wall right now, with bright red instructions, because I have misplaced it twice. The struggle is real!

We have the same machine :) - the slowest start up ever... This machine has a basting feature, the works great. use the "long stitch" function and lengthen your stitch length a bit. I use it lot when making mock ups, gathering and blind hemming. Turns a 4mm stitch length to an 8mm stitch.

Solidarity for "holy fuck how did I sew half of my mockup right side out and half inside out?" of it all. Fortunately all the seams always seem (seam!) to be there and I can gauge what I need.

1st question: What is the real purpose for tailor's tacks?
2nd Have you ever tried washable markers? I am trying them for the first time. I hope it washes out.

Hey! A mock-up that fits your shoulders! I know it had problems, but not the usual problems.

When you first showed the fabric when it was folded up, I didn't really like it. As you made the dress I began to like it more and more. I love your dress, it is beautiful.

I'm old so when I learned to sew there was no such thing as a seam ripper. We used single edge razor blades which meant both blood on fabric and cut fabric. Also, my mom's (her grandmother's) Minnesota treadle sewing machine sewed the tightest seams that I've ever seen. Hint, if you cut the fabric while ripping a seam, you can make the seam just a tad wider to encase the cut.

I saw you take that pocket pattern and put it on the cork board in your sewing room! Sewing gremlins?? Possibly. The dress turned out lovely!
