  • I see vintage sewing patterns with old tape on them all the time. The main questions I then get asked is "Can you use a vintage sewing pattern with old tape on it?"
    In today's sewing vlog, I take on that very challenge.
    I decided to use a plus size 1960's vintage pattern (Simplicity 8591, in a bust 46") that had been taped from top to bottom. How did it go? Stick around and find out.

    I have been sewing for 59 years. Last year I learned something that I wish I had learned in my infancy. Instead of licking the end of the thread to make it go through the sewing machine needle, use said spitty finger to 'moisten' the back of the needle. Having done that, it just grabs the thread and pulls it through. (I felt the need to share this because of the black thread difficulty.) I know this is dumb and maybe gross, but I love it.

      I’m going to try this! Genius! My favorite trick so far is to use beeswax lip balm on your lips and then when you lick the thread, the wax will make the end of the thread stiffer and easier to go through the eye. But as stated before, I’m also not going to get up to go find any, and I always have spit available, so….

    If you have holes in your fabric from stitches, etc. there's a quick tip for getting rid of them, at least a good part of them. Use some spray starch and a give the spot an ironing, they should disappear. My brother taught me that, he was an EMT and had to change stuff on his uniform at times. Also, you do know the white vinegar trick for hemlines when you change them? Spray along the vinegar along the crease line from where the hem was folded and use the iron again. Crease is gone and nicely flat, and the smell will go away. Can't tell you how many times I've had to adjust hems and stitch holes, eye roll here. Yes, I am short, lol.

    Usually tape dries out so badly that t is easy to remove. However, my sewing teacher (Mrs. French) taught us to never use tape of any kind of tissue patterns. My favorite thing for zippers is wonder tape. It’s very sticky skinny tape that dissolves in water. You put it down on either side and stick them together and the zipper does not pucker. It’s a miracle indeed. I hate things that are disposable but this stuff isthe best.

    I think that the full-on tape removal kknd of speaks to no, you can't really use a tapey old pattern 😜
    Super adorable dress! That silhouette is still not pleasing to most of us, but I think you should give this specific garment a lot more wear, because it's fun and you're rocking it ❤

    Dress looks great. The issue with your stitches, I too have a Bernina, you need a new needle. Sometimes they are bad right from the package. Love your videos always a good giggle.

      @StephanieCanada  ปีที่แล้ว

      But it worked fine on the white, that was a looser weave. But yes, I may double check that needle. I may just need a new one.

    Okay I freaking LOVE your videos! The reveal at the end was beyond adorable, fun and sooo you! I think the way you did the reveal on this video was the best one yet. It showed movement from far away, up close, with and without the belt, the cut of the earrings AND side by side shots was the chef’s kiss!

    I have an Annie Adams pattern that someone did an FBA on sometime in the last 20 years. And only on one of the two bust pieces. I had to so very carefully cut the tape on the seam line and then tape it back together. Also figured out after cutting that the person cut off the front but 2 inches at an angle.
    It took me forever to redraft that piece.

    I would have peeled all that old tape off in the first place, after seeing it taped over creases, puckering, peeling...
    Surely 3M / Scotch Gift Wrap tape wouldn't do that on a pattern. It doesn't begin to cup or shrink. I have doctored up really old paperback books, inside and outside. Though the paperback qere already old from the get-go, my patch jobs are reaching the 35 year mark and are looking just dandy - which is why I use it. I noticed a few things that I had taped up did better with it than regular cellophane tape. Over time, I used more and more Scotch gift wrap tape with its matte finish to tape other things. And here I tell you that I have "sliced & spread'' a few patterns ...it ages extremely well. So far so good, that the most patterns' tape jobs are only about 20 years old. It folds pretty neatly without cracking. I call it magic tape. I think it may've been on the label at one time in the past because I am not wont to use the word "magic" because of the dark connotations.

    Happy Halloween in August! I too, am an October 30th birthday goul, though quite a bit older than you as I turned 60 last October. You gave me some fun ideas for color blocking as I also have some vintage patterns (1970's, which I LOVE!!! - the decade I grew up) and some pretty weird Halloween fabric cuts! Thanks for sharing, I always enjoy your videos.

      My dearly loved late mother was another October 30 baby, and yes, she got the Must! Love! Halloween! card at birth (and then passed it on to me, her May baby -- my brother is an Oct 28 baby & got his own.) She would have been 70 this past October, & I just turned 51 this year.
      Stephanie, you remind me of my Mum in lots of ways, & she would have adored your channel. :)
