🐍 don't forget the snakes!! One of our friends (who is 23) caught a small garter snake at our barbecue and walked it around for 10 minutes so we could all say hello. 😂
I worked for a shop that when we did the discards for patterns we tossed everything and as soon as we got a break we went out and got all the patterns and divided them between each of us fabric department workers. I have tons of them
I've got the Batman costume pattern! My mother- in- law made it for my husband when he was a kid. AND she gave me the actual costume, too! It's a treasure!
Bernadette Banner as well. It would be cool to see Rachel, Bernadette, and Morgan do their own spin on that pattern as they did with Secret Pants. And yes, I know Bernadette has a whole Lady Sherlock, so maybe she could do the cropped pants to add to it.
I worked at a family-owned fabric store in the early to mid nineties and can confirm we removed the pattern envelopes to send back to the pattern companies. So indeed, I do have lots of patterns with no envelopes.
I worked in a fabric shop ten years ago (2010s) and we sent back the envelopes but kept the patterns. I have so many "official envelope" free patterns in my stash.
The seventies era IS my vibe, so I’m loving the trip down memory lane, Stephanie. I did sew some of my own clothes in the 1970s. It’s fun seeing those patterns. I was in Jr. High, High School, and College then. I took a Home Ec class in sewing and another one in cooking. I think we girls were required to take one Home Ec class. It seems old-fashioned, now, although I think every human should learn a bit about cooking and for example, reattaching a button. Thanks for another great video!
I was required to take HomeEc classes too, though in the 60s. I was out of college by the beginning of the 70s, working, and sewing my own to save money. So many of these patterns are a trip back in time for me \(^-^)/.
The first dress with the triangle pockets were ideal for hankies which is probably what was put in pockets most often. Hankies were very handy, ‘scuse the pun.
I just purchased a VERY similar cat fabric - except washed in shades of pink and purple on a minky fabric! 😂 I'm turning it into a nightgown for my cat-obsessed daughter.
I was hired to do a concert with the local symphony and wore that 90’s blouse with the huge collar. Very theatrical and never had another occasion to wear it.🤣
NO WAY!!! I just had the most vivid flashback of freshman year home ec. class in 1994 when I used that Simplicity 9057 pattern for my sewing project!!! I made my sister a pair of shorts!!! WOW! Blast from the past!
My grandmother had du Barry patterns I think. (It was a long time ago now) P.S. 🤣 Really...I find it very hard to think of patterns issued in my lifetime as vintage...even if it was several decades ago....🤣.
Hi Stephanie, I am not sure if it happened in the US, but in England in the late 80's / early 90's you could purchase a magazine from the newsagent that had lots of patterns for mail order. Now the thing about those patterns were that they were all discontinued stock so they all came with a photocopy of the envelope wrapped around the pattern and instructions. The photocopy was held in place by "an elastic band" and we all know how you love those! I can't find any of the editions of the magazines but I still have a number of the patterns. The patterns were so cheap that I often bought them in duplicate; one copy to make up in my size and another copy to make up in my flatmate's size.
I’ve been sewing for nearly 50 years, a chunk of that being competitive sewing with 4-H, and this trip down memory lane made me smile. There were years when I poured over every pattern book until I could practically call them out by number.I know I looked at some of these ( and I remember why I didn’t use them) and my Mom made more.
I have nearly all of the 1980s and 1990s patterns that you showed, except the wedding dress and the giant lace collar. I've always loved tailored looking clothing and those that resembled 1940s dresses, and the retro dress patterns weren't really a thing back then.
I know circa 2010 we were instructed to pour water over unsold/discontinued patterns before tossing them, and our store manager was quite strict about it. Of course, this always happened after a $0.99 pattern sale, so there generally weren't many left and not in desirable sizes. As a person with a 58" bust, all I can do is look at the pretty patterns for inspiration. Even when you find a rare one thats close, my hip size says "nope"
I sewed many of these styles over 60 years. My mom had many patterns too, and she sewed our little school dresses in the 50s and 60s. Plus some intricate Barbie dresses, she was 16 and 20 when we showed up ;) and played Barbie with us. I picked up a bunch of larger patterns from the thrift store recently. I want some dresses!

Those little kids patterns are adorable. My mother was a seamstress and she made so many of my sister and I’s dresses. Seeing these patterns took me way back 🥰
I got married in the 1990’s and can I tell you - ALL the Bridal sewing patterns seemed to have those flippin roses all over them! My Aunt and I trawled for ages to find me a nice simple pattern and even then we had to swap out the roses on the sleeves of the bridesmaids dresses for large covered buttons! 🤦🏼♀️😂😂😂😂😂
SO much to talk about with this one... First off, that Victor Costa one (sans rosettes) actually looks like it could be a good base for Sarah's ballroom gown from "Labyrinth" (my dream project cosplay)
Silverfish also eat the pattern envelopes, and instruction sheets. Some of the damage may be from silverfish. I used to live in a cabin that was infested with silverfish. The exterminator told me the only way I could ever get them all out of that cabin was to remove all the insulation. They came in with the insulation where they ate the glue off the paper that held the insulation together. I sold the whole place and moved far away from it. The silverfish did damage many of my pattern envelopes and instruction sheets; and, they did damage to many of my books. Sealing everything up in plastic bags didn't help. The last time I saw that cabin, it looked ready to fall down.
Make me feel old, one more time - I have those two Vogue "wardrobe" patterns! Purchased new, in the smallest size range - which I fit again, if I do a FBA. They are exactly my style, and I just might use them.
The simplicity 9057 I sewed in home economics out of NFL material of the Cowboys for my step father. He loved them but I also have to say this was actually a great pattern. ❤ Good memories

I bet you'd like the 70's style of what the hippy types were sewing back in that day. They were more the Edwardian era cottage core and those are the ones I'd be drawn to and wore back in the 70's.
My high school homecoming dress (circa 1995) WAS that Vogue 1532! Well, I bought it from a store, but it was the far right style in crushed, stretch forest green velvet. It even had a metal cloak clip thing on the back to pull it snug. I still have very good memories of that dress - I felt so beautiful in it with my crimped-ish wavy hair. 😂
So many great patterns! I love all the kids patterns. I have a couple kids patterns from the 30s and 40s but sadly I had zero energy to be sewing when my wee ones were wee enough to fit in said patterns.
Hi! I worked in a joann in the mid to late 90’s we were told to mail the envelopes back and destroy the pattern😞. Anyone who did not destroy the pattern was immediately fired.
Question: When did Black women start appearing on the covers of the pattern packaging? Noted the Vogue 1592 frame the 90s - anything earlier? Also have you seen patterns from countries like Nigeria, Vietnam or China? Just curious.

I watch in large part to because my bust is also around your size and finding bras is something that I've given up on. I petite in height only. I have to sew to fit, like the petite height and the top and bottom needed different sizes anymore. I'm enjoy this pattern flash through history. I don't like the 50's or the 70's either one. I was a child in the 1970's and had a lot of things sewn for me by lady family members back then as mom was a single parent, not her fault, it's how things fell out. Oh yeah, Mom made my music outfits for Jr. high (7-8th grades) and college, then I made a couple for preforming as well. They just don't make things that fit everyone these days. In the 1920's they'd get your age and measurements. Numbers used to be your age, not your body size, so a size 22 was for a 22 year old.
Simplicity 7056 dress pattern I recognize. It's one of the many patterns I actually owned right now. I purchased it at Fabricland between 1992 to 1997. I don't quite recall. The only thing I don't like about that pattern is the under slip that comes with it. I regret to inform you I am a straight size woman. I do have high heels 👠 to go with the dresses 😊. 20:07 if that was mailed at the standard postage rate, it's from between 1971 and 1974. If it's overweight, then it's earlier. I remember when it went up from 6 cents to 8 cents, because that was when we still wrote letters to people rather than just calling them. If you got a phone call in my house in 1971, either somebody was pregnant or somebody died.

The Pattern might well be traceable and the instructions copy-able...? I mean if got traces along folds here and there? Cuz I've seen a few patterns that weren't too...offended that even I'd be willing to grab up if you have a Bob and Dent sales page lol

I worked 80s to 90s at a fabric store but they were not allowed to keep any of those discontinued patterns. The pattern dept had to trash them. 🇨🇦

I'm 99% sure the Simplicity 9057 shorts were the exact pattern everyone had to use in my Grade 8 sewing class
Same, but my teacher didn't allow us to add pockets, even for the kids she knew already sewed more complex things at home.

My mother's wedding dress was made with the Vogue 1060 pattern, pearls and everything!

I have the Simplicity 4303! I got it from my Gram years ago. I never made it because it was just too small!

Do you like the Burda magazine patterns? I collected the magazine from the late 80s to middle of the 90s, and hardly ever used them. I still have most of them too. I don't want to get rid of them I was just wondering what you thought of those?
