- Mustang gas cap. In this video, I go over the assembly of the gas cap, and some issues they seem to have. Definitely could be made better. For $145 I expect better.

I know this post is old now but I have one of these caps and yes the hinge and release are on the loose side. But instead of just sending it back to vender I decided to fix the issue. Very simply you just need a thicker pin in both pivot points to take out the play. The pin sits in a groove, grind and move the groove up slightly will give more trigger grab. also a stronger spring (or just stretch the existing spring a little) helps to better seal. It is just little things that are easily fixed, people these days especially the younger generations get bent out of shape if something does not fit like a glove and it should be plug and play.
I’m one of those that had a little play and to the point it would pop open on a slight bump. What I ended up doing was enlarging the mounting hole from the cap side a tad and gave me enough movement to make the latch more secure. Been problem free since then. Good luck.
Looking nice I'm about to put back together the 1966 mustang fastback also this videos are so helpful brother Thanks
The cap looks so perfect with that color
Neat process using the masking tape.
Nice upgrade, I’ve had one on my 68 Mustang with the small cap for about 5 years and it’s never popped open by itself. From New Zealand
That's a add on to your mustang hopefully it won't give you any problems thumbs up 👍
On my 69, if I accelerate hard (aka always), the spring doesnt have the strength to stop fuel from dumping out. I switched back to the standard twist on. No complaints.
I wish they made a version that would hinge to the side to make refueling easier. With it folding down it's right in the way of getting a gas filler in it. My el Camino has the opposite issue as the door opens up and you can't see what you are doing but it does keep the rain off...
I always liked the look of those caps. Thanks for sharing the info.
I used to leave a key in the trunk lock also,
You may want to install the gasket from a 69 Mach1 gas cap before finishing the installation. In fact, for the 69, it's suggested to install two gaskets so the edges of the fixed portion of the cap don't rub against the paint.
Thanks. I did check, and it’s not making contact.
Looks fantastic: like a piece of jewelry up against your amazing paint job.
Very cool, looks great!! Hopefully it won't rattle loose on you!!
I have been considering one of these caps but I read the reviews online and the issue of them popping open. For now I decided to stick with the stock style. Also I think the cap you had on there was for a 71-73 mustang not a 68.
To keep the cap from popping open as mine did, loosen the two screws at the cap hinge.
with the cap partly closed lift the cap and tighten the screws.
The reason the cap pops open is because the cap has to be lifted up to secure the lock.
If gas leaks out, remove 4 small screws and loosen the screw at the center where the spring is and then reinstall screws.
I put a little grease on the gasket to check contact.
Helpful?
Thanks.
Would another option be to stretch the spring out so it applies more pressure to close? That would keep the latch under increased load so it could not move around so easy. Just an idea, great video as always.. I realize I did not buy those separate screws and am getting tired of all these pieces NOT including the nuts or screws.
More spring pressure would make it worse. I had that with the attached cap. Ideally the teeth on the latch need a groove or serated edges to offer some grip.
@@JoDaddysGarage OK. Was thinking It was loose and able to shift. Hard to tell from video what causing issue.
that is dope, man.
Looks as if you will need to tilt the gas pump nozzle to either side to put gas in it. Not an issue, just sayin'.
Interesting.
What tail lights are those?

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called "Abgasbespaßung". :-(((
Crazy.
