How can an ENTIRE CULTURE have no standards? It makes me wonder how Chinese restaurants in America are cutting corners. Absolutely deplorable.
Reason why they do those stuff in China is because of government, there's no regulations or even if there is, the merchants can pay the government to let them walk for free. But the U.S. at least we have a government agency that is actually doing the works, (To what degree I'm not certain) but at least there are some degree of supervision, and you have the morals (In China they do anything for the money), in U.S. most merchants still have some morals left in them (There are always bad people no matter where you are), so don't put the entire Chinese society to blame, it's the government.
The United States during its Gilded Age had a huge number of historical similarities to the PRC, health inspectors and a lot of reform were required before this kind of adulteration of food was eliminated in the US itself. Unethical businessmen are everywhere.

I do know how to scratch cook, have many cookbooks, love to bake & do many things in crock pot, because, set it, forget it, results always fantastic & delicious. For most of the last 30 years, have made almost all of my own bread in bread machine always delicious, no preservatives or other undesirable stuff! Have about 15 to 20 favorite bread recipes that I rotate making, some I set machine to make overnight (wake up to smell of fresh baked bread waiting for butter, honey or jam, AWESOME!) Have worn out 4 bread makers! Just checked 2 different grocery stores that have smoked oysters, different brand labels than Dollar Tree, but still product of China so have to watch grocery stores also!

This isn't even the worst stuff I've seen them do in China. They are scooping sewage out of manholes and putting it through sieves. Apparently, raw sewage in China is so gross and full of fuel, feces, dumped oils and such that if you drain the liquid portion of their sewage away from the solids with basic cooking sieves, said liquid can be used to deep fry.
They did this for a LONG. TIME. Even after the expose, as far as I know, street vendors in China still do this. They deep fry food in sewage runoff that is mostly fecal liquids and petrol.
How did they get away with it? They call it 'recycled cooking oil'.
You cannot trust anything made in China. People don't understand just how bad it is in every industry over there. They are frying foods in literal sewage. Right. Now.

I'm an electrician, and once had a job to replace the lighting in one Chinese restaurant's restroom, where I witnessed the restaurant's head chef take dump and not wash his hands, before going straight to handling meat with his bare hands. I almost puked, realizing that this was not a one off occasion - this was a routine to him, judging by the way how nonchalantly he went through the whole process. After I got the job done, the owner of the restaurant offered a free lunch for having done such a good job and so quickly - I looked at him once, my eyes wide, and I told him, "Thank you, but no - I don't like eating food that has been handled by someone who doesn't wash their hands after taking a shit," and left without looking back.
Whenever I pass by the restaurant, I see mostly just Chinese customers in the restaurant anymore, when in the past there used to be a lot of locals. I don't know if the head chef is still working there or not, but something has definitely caused the clientele to shift.

This was not the first time I'd witnessed crap like that, but after getting a warning from the authorities for reporting stuff like this for the third time - that I could be officially sued for racism if the district attorneys caught a whiff of me doing this - I just decided to give up.
As an electrician who has worked fixing a lot of restaurant appliances - either by outright fixing them or replacing them - I've come to the conclusion that awfully many restaurants, both "low-class" and "high-class," tend to skimp on the hygiene part of their business quite a lot. Only when someone famous or influential gets sick due to their food, do they actually do something about it.
Word of mouth has clearly done its work though, as locals have ceased to pretty much going to the restaurant I mentioned in my original post. A lot of Chinese people still go there, so I guess they've just got better tolerance than we Europeans.
Either that or enough locals have gotten sick from eating there to realized its bad for their health.
I quit eating Chinese food because there was never any toilet paper or soap in the bathroom. Whenever I inquired, they claimed someone had gone out to buy more as they had run out. Eventually, I confronted them about it and mentioned that I had taken a picture and was considering contacting the food and safety administration. That is utterly grotesque!

I worked at Chinese catering hall for 5 years and then at my ex’s family restaurant for 4 years. I learned how to cook Chinese food at both these jobs. I can tell you at half the Chinese takeouts I’ve eaten at the food is sub-par. I would not eat Chinese food if I were you. I buy the ingredients and cook myself. But if you do eat out stick with chicken with broccoli. Those two items are usually always fresh. And if you can buy the one from the special diet menu where they serve the brown sauce on the side. Beef in Chinese restaurants is hit or miss. It’s so processed with meat tenderizer and bicarbonate that the texture is way off and you cannot tell how fresh it is. Then the sauce will cover up any off putting tastes and you will only find out when u are on the toilet later that night. Not all Chinese food is bad but there are enough bad actors to make it a risky proposition. And if you find a good one stick with it and also never offend the people preparing your food. As a former employee there are horror stories that you wouldn’t believe.

I remember a story about American family that was visiting their china root family. And they, after being taught about scams went to city to just do some sightseeing and constantly bought those sausages.
Their family told them to not eat it since it's too cheap to justify cost of material and labor onto it, but they didn't listened.

Listen up folks, years ago I toured a factory making hot dogs, standing in front of the meat grinder, in came bones, grizzle, unrecognizable parts, etc. So disgusting-I almost vomited on the spot, decided to never ate another hot dog and haven’t since. This was in the US, in China not surprised to learn they are literally grinding up anything and adding heavy doses of chemicals. Just yikes, eat your meat in its original form and no worries.
