  • Join my friend Steve and I for a winter weather trip in Hoosier National Forest. This was a trip we had planned for a few weeks to see how his older gear from years of backpacking works compared to some of the newer gear in the market. Days before the trip, the temperatures dropped big time, and it ended up being in the low teens overnight. We ended up having an awesome time. Only a short hike, but we brought tons of good food and snacks, had fun sharing stories, and had a lot of fun comparing his fifteen to twenty year old gear to my much more current set up. Turns out you don’t have to have the latest and greatest gear to stay warm and have a great time! Hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe and comment to let me know what you think!

"Neanderthals didn't sleep in tents " Old gear vs new gear. I often think I had more good times (though uncomfortable) years ago with heavier and crappier stuff than I do now. I seem to have to almost baby my more expensive gear in fear of ruining it. I still can't pull the trigger on that nice Durston tent though. Maybe for my next birthday I'll splurge on the simple X-mid.

It’s very true lol. Some stuff is so expensive you’re afraid to use it lol. I’m perfectly happy with the simple regular xmid. I’ve had dcf tents in the past, and yes they are a bit lighter, but they don’t pack down well. The biggest benefit was that they don’t stretch. But the sil poly used on the xmid didn’t stretch either. Huge win for me. It’s a great tent for sure!

Yeah the only truly disposable gear is your shoes. They will eventually wear out. Everything else is pretty durable if it’s taken care of.

He made a good point about whether is a day or a week, the same amount of sleeping gear is being carried, only the amount of food changes.

Great video! As a fellow “min-cultist” I’m always interested in watching someone set up Sage. I’m curious, though, where you enter and which trail you take to get to that spot? I’m looking for some short yo-yo destinations for winter camping. Thanks for taking us along!

This is just the Terrell ridge trail. Park at the fire tower and just follow the trail straight out. About 2 miles out there. The trail eventually curves to the left to a cemetery, but if you look straight into the trees you’ll see the sign pointing back to the trail and camp sites.

Two friends camping out, no ultralight bs, and common man. I like it.
