  • Linda Clair ‘I Am Enlightened’ Interview by Renate McNay
inda was born in Sydney in 1958. She had virtually no interest in meditation or spiritual matters until the age of 37, when she was introduced to Peter Jones, who became her first teacher. This meeting was an intense experience for her. There was a depth to the communication she had never experienced before, and it triggered a search for freedom, which was soon the major focus of her life. At this time she had two teenage children and was running a small business, but she managed to make time for intensive meditation. In 1997 she had a profound awakening during a ten-day retreat in northern New South Wales. She later described the experience as 'deeper than bliss'.
There was a marked change in her after the awakening, which was really a very strong glimpse of enlightenment. She knew now what was possible, and she also knew that she would not be satisfied until that state became permanent. She maintained the humble attitude of a student and continued to practice.
During this time she met the Japanese Zen Master, Hogen Yamahata, who also impressed her with his deeply enlightened presence and humility.
In 2004 she travelled to Japan and spent six weeks at a Zen monastery with Hogen-san's Master, Harada Tangen Roshi, known as Roshi Sama. Her time with him was intense. She sensed she was close to the culmination of her journey. She returned to Australia in a deeply detached, peaceful state. Roshi Sama gave her the name Dai'an Jishin, which translates as 'deep peace, compassionate heart/mind'. Her search ended during a ten-day retreat with Hogen-san at Springbrook, in the mountains behind the Gold Coast in Queensland.
'Everything changed. All fear disappeared. I was left with nothing and nothing to lose. The depth of peace and satisfaction overwhelmed me, and it continues to deepen every day. Life is immediate. There is no desire for anything more or different. This is enough.'

Great courage, commitment and love. I love hearing the freshness of her direct experience and understanding. I found her perspective so clear and helpful. I was very surprised to see Linda aroused so much derision, anger and hatred, then I remembered the fate of the man who 2000 years ago proclaimed himself to be The Way, The Truth and The Life. The Son of God. In today’s language an enlightened being.

What i love with Linda is her silence and humility. Instead of parroting advaita concepts she has gone through a difficult purification process and matured into definite state about which many merely guess and talk.

Renate asks a very clear question early on in this interview "but what were you seeing?" which unfortunately Linda is unable to answer in a clear and concise manner. Enlightenment is not whole bunch of NEW concepts and metaphors which are different to the BEFORE concepts and metaphors we had prior to meeting the mystical bloke who claimed to be enlightened. Mystical blokes can stimulate all sorts of imagined "states" which can last lifetimes. But there is a difference between something with tangible reality and being detached and peaceful. People who claim to be enlightened should really work on describing the experience.

Funny, lots of negative posts because she used the phrase "I am enlightened" -- which is a taboo in the nonduality circle. However, she explained why she used the term as a sign post for people looking for an enlightened teacher -- even though she is very aware that there is no one who is enlightened.
The key thing I took away was in her meditation when she said that "the body is an illusion -- but the closest thing to reality that we have to guide us" (paraphrasing). I have noticed as well that the energy and feelings within the body is the doorway. I appreciate her words.

The easiest way to discover whether or not an individual is enlightened, pay close attention to a particular series words that they all utter.... The moment you hear these individuals describe themselves as "enlightened" is the very moment you can be sure that they are not.

People commenting are worried by her ordinariness, she may not be perfectly enlightened but in Buddhist terms she may have achieved stream entry, therefore she won’t fall back but she will still have awareness to deepen, delusions and clinging to dissolve and still have plenty of residual ego and resistance to transform.

  • @sngscratcher

I think enlightenment is a false concept, a head game that some people play with themselves. Rather, there are only expanding levels of awareness - not some specific point in time where one instant before that point you're "ignorant," and the next instant, you are fully aware of the true nature of reality. Cheers.

To the naysayers : How about just saying well good for her she may well have got it. "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery none but ourselves can fee our minds". If we are honest with ourselves we will see that only by ourselves can we free ourselves. So if someone is (or even may be)free wish them well. It may just help you get there too. But if you wish to wallow in doubt and suffering well you are free to for as long as you like! All good things truly and really.

She say's; "reality is something you're in".. and that's what enlightenment is. Vedanta calls this indirect knowledge or self realization. Enlightenment/self-actualization is direct knowledge with no veil at all.. Let me see if I can explain here: To be in something would mean that there is something more or higher than you the self. There is only one self or essence here. Non duality means; "I am reality". So direct self-knowledge is:- Reality is something I am. This is why Linda say's that "she" is enlightened. Actually everyone is in the light by default. She has just become aware of this fact. She actually has another step to take and Vedanta would close the show for her. But she thinks that she is a teacher now. She say's at the end of the interview that freedom is the most difficult thing in the world, that is was incredibly hard. When a person is qualified according to Vedanta i.e they are dispassionate and discriminating with a burning desire for freedom then enlightenment is very easy because.. the I is already free! It is the light in which everything appears, actionless limitless whole and complete aware conscious existence. It is so simple an 8 year old could understand it, and many have.. Knowledge does the work itself. Reality is something that is always here and reality/awareness at a certain point because of the deeply inward turned mind re-places the ego with the knowledge "I am ever free whole and complete ,limitless consciousness. From this point on we are the light looking through an apparent person looking out at the world, which is seen as non-separate from Me-the light and this real I, I am unlimited, boundless eternal LIFE.

What an odd title - as if there is a noun, "enlightenment," this external thing we seek. Seems bizarre to me. Body-minds come & go, but not awareness - not Spirit or whatever ridiculous noun we use to represent That. We, as That, just are - just is - just am.
Yet our playground, i.e., Cosmos, is infinite-eternal. Lifetimes, bodies, planes, dimensions - perhaps they are the rides at the divine fun park? Do we truly believe there is some heaven that is an end to our trek? Some enlightenment that is an end, a final arrival? Into what?
Who/what wants an end, anyway? Ends & beginnings partake of time, which we know, in higher consciousness, is illusory - sensible & useful tho it is in 3D. What end is not equally a new beginning? Is there one teacher, one teaching suitable for all?
There are endless awakenings that bring truly deep internal change. There will always be another layer/level/step/mountain to enjoy - in the realm of 3D. To higher consciousness - all just Now - nothing behind, nothing ahead at all. This step, this Now - IS the destination, IS the point. It goes beyond mind.
All of this doing - practices, dogmas, methods - doing, doing, doing. I see it as evidence of mind running the show - rather than That - awareness - that which cannot be named.
And why can there not be many ways into realization of That? There are many & diverse flowers, yes? What if all the birds had to sing the "right" song - wear the "right" plumage? An obscenity, yes? Let us sing our song, not to enlighten or correct or inform anyone, but for the simple joy of singing - for the beauty, the bliss of song. The Robin is not right & the Blue Jay wrong. Or - what if we've got Robins trying to teach Blue Jays to sing? LOL. Makes about as much sense as one way/path/enlightenment.
Seems to me my way isn't the "right" way for anyone but self. And that is fun. Just to be in Now, in simple Joy of Being - to shine as the sun for no cause beyond Being. Sun = shining. Unconditional, nonjudgmental shining - loving my path, but loving/respecting the path of each one. Each Inner Self is the perfect Guide - for that self :))
Besides, the differences of the seeming "others" spice up the journey. No one is completely clear in 3D - it's not the realm for that, this realm where our perfection can be found in our imperfection - where every coin has 2 sides. Perhaps we're trying to use a screwdriver to do the job of a hammer - or a cake to do the job of a violin? Yum. Always something to teach, something to learn - in 3D. Why? For joy. Or - why not? :-)
    ~♥~

      I agree.
The buddha reached a state of no body mind identification and still recognized it wasnt full enlightenment.
Theres always more growth to be made. Personal evolution is like pulling weeds. Theres always going to be something to pull. Once you pull ALL of it, you'll be there. Temporarily. Because everything is temporary and just like weeds, something else will arise and the perfect state will be gone untill you start pulling those weeds again.
People who claim to reach the "end" are merely ignoring the weeds in their backyard that have grown again.
Unless i experience an end to this cycle, i will not claim there is one.
Well, besides literal death ofc. Lol.

I am very disappointed in this interview. It reduced awakening and enlightenment to a totally self-centered, narcissistic pursuit where only a select few can hope to achieve freedom. Her viewpoint is more reminiscent of medieval clergy who read the bible in Latin in order to maintain their power and false superiority. If awakening is in her view such a rare thing then it offers no purpose and has no relationship to the wholeness that is supposedly what consciousness is. It is then just another way self-obsessed spiritual egos aggrandize themselves and place themselves above others. I hope this lady turns her attention back on her family and stops trying to spread an extremely masochistic form of spirituality that only a reserved few samurai diehards can ever hope to benefit from.

Davld Jenkins I see your point. There is lots of evidence these days that people realize this timeless reality without needing to go through such hardship. The genuine interest in recognising false beliefs does the job in many instances.
However, it is totally natural to look for happiness, and to deny this is another form of pretense. I would not call this natural urge a narcissistic pursuit. A narcissistic pursuit will prevent anyone from realizing the timeless. This interview is an example that shows that teachers draw on their own past experiences they had 'on their way' prior to their teaching. That seems to be only natural. I consider it inappropriate to suggest the need for suffering before freedom happens. Suffering happens or it doesn't, irrespective of any announcement that 'it HAS to happen.'

Davld Jenkins It is so rare because you have to lose everything and die to "achieve" it. Most people arent ready for that. Are you willing to put your family, career, .. everything on the table for freedom? You wont know what it will change in your daily life. You might end up as Ramana in a cave or as Francis Lucille, there is no knowing, and no manipulating out of fear. Most people dont want this. I'd say its only possible for those who have no choice. You have to be so discontent that you are willing to - figuratively speaking - throw yourself out of the window of a 100 story skyscraper. Everybody wants all the goodies, but nobody wants to pay for it. Lol!
