  • Radical Acceptance: Our Gateway to Love and Freedom, with Tara Brach [2022-09-21]
Our capacity to realize the truth of who we are and to love fully, arises from moments of true acceptance. This means meeting our unfolding life with an unconditional, open and tender presence. This talk on Radical Acceptance explores how the trance of unworthiness contracts us away from presence, and how activating mindfulness and self-compassion with RAIN loosens the grip of self-aversion and awakens our hearts.

Thank you so much. My partner has cancer and I am exhausted from surgeries, appointments, etc. I have to go food shopping today. The cupboard is bare. Woke with a screaming headache. The story of the old man & the baby made me weep. My headache is gone. A gift of recognition It’s ok to cry. Thank you.

I read Tara Brach's book, Radical Acceptance years ago, at the suggestion of a therapist. That book changed my life, and my relationship with pain and dealing with uncomfortable feelings. I have re-read the book, I can't say how many times now. It sits on my night stand, with highlighted sections, notes written on the margin, and much underlining. I will spend the rest of my life re-reading and referring to it to as a guide. For anyone who has not read this book yet, I humbly and highly recommend it. It had a profound impact on my life, and continues to years later. I appreciated this 39 minute video with the RAIN meditation. Tara's words are wise, insightful, authentic, and compassionate. I needed this video, today, in this moment. I am grateful to you and your many life lessons, Tara.

Tara Brach quote highlights from this video: “In any moment that we truly aren't resisting-that we're truly opening to the life of the moment-we have the capacity to love more fully and to realize that this mystery, this vastness, that's really what we are.”
“The gift of meditation, of training in presence, is that it really allows our body and mind to be in the same place at the same time.”
“The Buddha said that the great suffering we experience is not realizing the truth of who we are, our true nature, and being caught up in an identification with a small, limited self.”
“We get identified with the covering, we think we're the covering-that controlling, promoting self-and we forget who's looking through. We forget the tender awake heart, the awareness that's looking through.”
“The essence of all sickness is homesickness. There's a suffering when we leave home. We forget what we really belong to-that aliveness and awareness and loving-we forget who we are.”
“We think we have our own views, but we're not thinking our own thoughts. We're thinking society's thoughts.”
“We try to judge ourselves into being a better person. We try to fix ourselves through judgment.”
“No amount of accomplishing, no amount of judging, actually helps us to contact experience and trust our goodness.”
“The path to realizing who we are and living from that freedom … is learning to bring radical acceptance and unconditional compassionate presence to the experience of the moment.”
“As Carl Rogers put it, ‘It wasn't until I accepted myself just as I was that I was free to change.’ In other words, the prerequisite for true transformation and healing is this radical acceptance, this presence and kindness, with what's right here.”
“Notice this tender presence that's more the truth of who you are than any limiting story or belief. The more you trust this, the more freedom, creativity, love, aliveness you'll find in your life.”
    RAIN Meditation:
”What RAIN does when we offer ourselves attention, and when we bring in that nurturing, is a kind of spiritual re-parenting. We're bringing the presence and kindness we need to heal.”
Recognize: See what's here. Name it.
Allow: Allow it to be here, not to fight it, not to judge it, just let be.
Investigate: Deepen the inquiry into the body and feel what's here. Contact it.
Nurture: Bring kindness to what we find. When we do that, we experience what's called ‘after the RAIN’ which means we start opening to our natural being.

We can often think we are not worthy because someone in our lives has been telling us that or treating us like that over and over again unill we are programmed to believe it and it takes a lot to unprogramme ourselves from that.

I find this way better therapy than what any therapist has ever given me. I’m seeing my sixth therapist in 11 years, and not one of them have given me anything like you have on TH-cam. I found that the therapists keep trying to do CBT when I tell them that it hasn’t been helpful for my trauma. CBT just makes me overanalyze all of my thoughts. It never tells me to pause. To do techniques such as RAIN. Everything I have learned from your videos and your book “Radical Acceptance” has shifted my perspective more in two years than CBT in 11.

    • @rovingrhea

I agree. I have the same experience with CBT and trauma, and Tara has really shown me something no therapist have. Sending you love!

Unfortunately, traditional trauma can be retraumatizing, programming the trauma further...as our subconscious mind is programmed through repetition+emotion. If we haven't learned emotional/nervous system regulation and integrated it in a daily way....our talking about our story and try to only do some techniques without addressing this dysregulation, can be worse than no therapy, for some people.
Learning mindfulness, presence, the breathing of meditation and yoga (which helps our parasympathetic system get online, are all foundational to healing.
Most of us are in some state of almost continual sympathetic nervous system activation, and traditional therapy only exacerbates that.
I hope, that more therapists learn tools, skills, to teach, that focus on emotional regulation, calming, as the primary goal & other therapy can follow (very individual of course) after the work of emotional regulation is more part of the person's daily life.

I would like to express my gratitude for this teaching. The most beautiful teachings to me are when I find concrete, applicable and eloquent expressions of something I have felt to be true inside myself on and off for a while, but haven't had the wisdom and clarity to distill as beautifully. This is just so: I notice how often I run away from my unpleasant self-conceptions. How I wish I hadn't rushed toward emotional relief but sat with that for a moment to truly connect with it and accept myself and gain insight. I feel fortunate to see in this video a mirroring of my lived experience with such kindness and clarity. Thank you!

I have body dysmorphic disorder since my teens which started after school kids began calling me ugly. I am in my 50s and I loathe myself, my internal voice telling me nonstop I am unattractive and this is why I have never had a life partner, that I'm not good enough. I wish I had not been born to suffer with this mental illness that makes me believe I truly am unattractive and as a result have had to be on my own, watching other people getting married, being happy, having children. It is so difficult to feel that you are not attractive enough to find a life partner so must go through this world always feeling rejected.

Are you planning on recording this 20yr edition for Audible? I’m sure it’s a huge endeavor especially when it already exists w/ a different narrator so it might not seem necessary.
the only reason I haven’t purchased it is because it’s not in your physical voice - which is maybe silly & selfish but your voice is so known & gives so much peace to me & so many. I don’t tend to purchase unless they are in the authors voice. So Just in case it’s up for a vote - I’m a yes please!!
