- The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e blends BMW's penchant for performance with the Toyota RAV4 Prime's gentle nudge into the EV future. The X5 shuffles power in the same smooth way, and it also uses the electric motor to provide pretty thrilling acceleration for a midsize SUV. In my opinion, the future of luxury is electrified in some way, and this is the obvious first step many people in the mainstream will take. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Fantastic review! I’m heavily considering this or a Q7 for our family of 4, with adults being 5’-8”. I’m an Audi guy but they don’t offer anything this size that competes truly with it sadly short of a Porsche hybrid which is not the look I’m going for. My current SQ5 gets 20 MPG and I can afford it but weekly fill ups will be a bit harder knowing this exists with same 4.7 0-60 and 50 MPG….

I wasn't kind to the current one in my review, mainly because it feels ancient in the lux space right now, but if Toyota/Lexus knows one thing it's how to make perfectly built SUVs... @@jax1079Had the same opinion when I got an nx as a loaner a couple of times... then it grew on me and and started shopping for one, but ended up in an RX450hL, as for SUV's, I want hybrid. Got rid of the RX at the beginning of the pandemic since we no longer used it and it was losing value in my driveway. I'm looking forward to your review of the nx. Hopefully they'll lend you the 450+ .....

What’s the real world EV range? 30miles is probably in ideal situation. Is it more like 15-20 miles?
Thank you! It depends: in urban/suburban driving in normal weather, I think you'd easily see 25 or more, but in longer stretches on highways or in colder weather it would probably be 20 or less. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

Agree on the steering wheel cutting off view of instruments, and yes annoying that car play can't just work seamlessly. And rear legroom should be better with a car that takes up this much room in a garage, ha. What are your thoughts on the black shadowline grill v the chrome. Was looking at the shadowline option to black it out (also blacks out the tailpipes) but after seeing this review, the chrome looks OK. Haven't seen many in person since dealers are light on stock, so hard to decide.
To be honest, I'm not much of a chrome kinda guy, but... I think it's subtle enough on the X5 that I kind of prefer it. Just my thought. Good luck with your decision, and thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

It is funny how in NA this is considered small. In Europe this is the biggest car I would ever think to buy. I even fear that will not fit in most covered parking places.
This is true. There’s a long history of epic road trips across this continent, and I think that scale and scope is reflected in the vehicles. There’s a wastefulness and excess too, of course, but being able to cross state lines with the entire family and all their luggage and gear in tow is a very American vibe, I think. @@jax1079can always throw a roof box on top, I’ve got two kids, 3 and 9 months and I don’t think I should get bigger than this cause I’ll lose the fun factor that both my wife and I crave. We go cross state couple times a year in Washington with SQ5 and roof box . Do we want a little more space, yes, but not too much it becomes a bus 😂

I’m actually looking at the x5, but I didn’t think about the 45e.
But I’m done with low profile tires because the crappy Texas roads have cost me 7 tires prematurely in 20 months on my m550.
Always get tires and wheels warranties with low profiles.
The x5 is definitely more comfortable in general.
My other choice is the lc500, which is the opposite of this beast. Very good and helpful review btw.

The air suspension on the 45e make for a very good ride, and the low battery pack gives it almost zero body roll. I think it is one of the best cars in their lineup right now.
I’m looking to order a ‘23 fully loaded. I just want to make sure it handles decently in the corners. Doesn’t have to be an M5 in terms of handling, but just want to avoid body roll.

@@jax1079 I have an M4 at the moment and I am going to buy an X5 hybride tomorrow. There is a difference of course but he moves stable in corners. I am a fast driver (+120m/hr) but it felt comfortable. The price is an issue. It will cost me Euro 109.0000,00 with only a few options here in the Netherlands.

It's just an X5 -- that's the model name. The name isn't stupid -- how much shorter do you want it to be? xDrive denotes AWD -- and 45e denotes the engine / powertrain size. How much simpler do you want it?

You absolutely spoilt an otherwise good review by comparing this to the shitty RAV4. It’s not even effin funny ! That RAV4 is coarse and grainy 4 pot , and this B58 I6 is ultra smooth and best engine in the world.
I can tell you're approaching this from a completely objective viewpoint and that you're not biased at all.

Yes, but it also costs FAR more. For a normal guy like me, though, I'd take the plug-in Sorento over this, save the money, and enjoy the better long term reliability. Thanks for watching!
At nearly 14¢/kWh for electricity in SE PA, I don't see how running this as an EV makes economic sense. I want to want this, but saving money on fuel just doesn't pencil out.
How so? If you have a Tesla with a 100kwh battery pack that goes 400 miles, it would be $14ish dollars to charge it completely, which you wouldn't need to do every night (which also would be off peak hours and many places lower rates then). A gas powered car at 30mpg would have to have a 13ish gallon fuel take and need almost $40 to refuel.
This vehicle gets over 1 mile per KWh in real world driving (1.5 m/kWh ideal). By evaluating that fuel economy as compared to its petrol equivalent, @ $4.50 per gallon (premium)and at 20mpg, you’re looking at $0.225 per mile there. So yeah, you’re saving 40% on fuel at that rate. In addition, this car get’s ~26mpg highway even with the battery depleted. Can’t beat that!
