@COOLTOY I know you said most places dont really sell the KL25Z board with the headers already soldered, but do u know of any that do? Id rather spend the extra, thanks in advance
My family and friends think I'm crazy for building a virtual pinball machine so it's nice to see someone else who is just as enthusiastic and gets as much enjoyment from building and modding virtual pinball machines as I do.
My wife doesn't understand the desire either, but she sure is enjoying the improvements on the machine now when she plays the cabinet. For some people they've got to see and experience it to understand the madness behind it all.
Pulled the trigger (or plunger) on the Virtual Pin Plunger Kit. Whew-Lad...$160 is steep, but I can't wait to get this thing going. I own all the pinball tables too, and the Marvel Lineup was just abysmal in my opinion. Thanks, Doug, for doing all this. I'm grateful for sure!
yea the plunger kit is overly expensive, luckily it's also has been working great for me. In the end I just said I rather pay extra for plug and play instead of pulling out my soldering iron and doing it all myself.
Doug I really love the Hulk table, it's a blast playing Hulk vs different opponents with different mechanics for each fight! The table has that big playfield feeling.
Doug, you're amazing. I am just starting on my journey and will begin the project on 4/14/22 when my AFM cabinet arrives from Walmart ($642.81) (I am a Bally/Williams junkie.) I purchased the virtual pin kzl25 accelerometer and plunger kit you recommended ($171.70), Acer backbox monitor ($136.81), 36" LG playfield monitor ($225.21 refurbished), plastic feet, screw terminals, usb relay, jst connectors and diodes ($67.19). I may do the additional exciters, amps and surround sound later but I think this is a good starting point. Total spent $1243.34 so far. (I have an HP Z2 micro sized PC with an i5 processor and integrated NVidia card with four display port outputs and 16 GB of RAM I got from work for free.) I think that is SUPER reasonable for what this will be for the cost spent. How large of a hard drive do you recommend for all the tables and storage? Thanks for taking the time. I used your affiliate links.
nice work Doug! been great following along and seeing more ideas on how to mod the A1up PinBall. I'm pretty close to finishing up my mod and you're definitely right there's many ways to skin a cat! keep it up :)
Another great tutorial. I use that board for nudge only and separate encoder for buttons (no soldering). I just use the physical nudge as not a fan of button nudging, but dealer's choice
My wife has been enjoying playing pinball a lot lately. She’s just now getting comfortable with using nudge for ball saves. She prefers the buttons, I still prefer shaking the actual machine.
Awesome video Doug, thank you. I cannot wait for the haptics video! My favorite Pinball table on FX3 or VPX is Medieval Madness, I LOVE that table, the snarky comments, and fun gameplay
@@cooltoy Yeah, I heard about that! I wonder how that happened? Is that on the actual pinball table Williams built, or just the Zen version? did they reach out to her? does she know someone at Williams?
If you purchase the KL25Z accelerometer board with plunger from Virtuapin you are basically paying for everything setup, including the firmware to incorporate the plunger and nudge. Once you receive that kit, you download their software and it basically allows you to map the buttons, plunger and nudge features using x360ce. You then go into x360ce, select your accelerometer device and then go to the buttons/ sticks you want to map your plunger, buttons and nudge features. You then click the button or stick you want and click record. If you want to map your accelerometer to the dpad, select dpad up, left or right and then select record, then apply the appropriate nudge direction and it should map the proper axis to that button. You can then use Virtuapin software for you plunger / accelerometer to adjust the thresholds and multipliers to make it more or less sensitive. Hope this helps anyone who decides to add the digital plunger and accelerometer from Virtuapin to their cabinet.
8:35 The Virtuapin plunger also won't clamp onto the Arcade1UP wood box frame properly. The mounting holes/plate have taller screw posts. It looks like they were made for a slightly thicker wood mount than what is currently being used by Arcade 1UP. Not impossible to overcome, just something to be aware of.
Your refusal to adopt the metric system is both confusing and terrifying. This is so cool Cooltoy....I'm something of a scientist myself. Not really haha I think may be above my comprehension level

The kl25z is the best you can get to this type of mods! my software differs from yours but maybe im not updated... also the kl25z is fully compatible with vpx with no software in the middle like the x360ce that you need for fx3. Glad you take my advice for the screens position... its also better to have the dmd at the end.
The backglass monitor looks great! Thanks for researching one that is a perfect fit. Thanks for this video :) I ordered the monitor ASAP :) they only had 7 left on Amazon Canada. I imagine the monitor would be the hardest thing to find, since it fits in there so perfectly :)

as I stated in the video, there are several different methods of achieving the same results. I prefer the KL25Z board over the Geeekpi encoder for various reasons.
Difference i believe is, the board CoolToy uses is able to do nudge via buttons and/or physical, Kong's board is buttons only, no physical nudge. Both are options. Virtual Pinball is a rabbit hole and can be $$$, beware. 😂
@@MrEd20901 you can actually install multiple klz boards and have them do different things, then link them in x360ce. Same for me. I pulled the extension from the main power and ran it from the Y to the DMB controller. You can also order an extension cable from Amazon if needed.
Just to let you know,I put a flashing led strip in the backglass, which is so cool BUT,you cannot disconnect the main backglass power or the game menu will not work properly. So I JUST put a piece black and white carbord, white side to reflect leds, black light side and all is well.It makes a big difference having a flashing backglass..
@CoolToy, Doug you're the man. Great video nice concise explaination and most importantly not an hour long. 😁 I don't have an Arcade1Up pinball machine yet but love seeing how others accomplish things. It sparks ideas for my mods as well as inspires.
I bought the same virtuapin plunger kit. My screw terminals on the plunger look to be sized for 3/4" wood and the MDF on the A1up is 1/2". As such, the screw terminals sit about 1/4" too long inside my cabinet and the mounting plate doesn't sit flush against the wood. Did you have the same issue? How did you resolve? I'm thinking some 1/4" washers with a groove cut out might be my best bet but I wanted to hear your experiences.
@COOLTOY Doug, when you added the jpg for the black glass were they in a folder and you just mapped it too the games or when you configure in FX3 there’s is any setting to pick them?
Great video and series!! So have you ever installed a "Launch Ball" button in lieu of the plunger altogether? Just wondering if that might be an easier mod if you dont care about a plunger. Thanks man!!
I have that same monitor, is the monitor only staying in place mostly due to the sides being press against it? I have used 3m tapes and gorilla tapes and nothing ever stays in place for long here in Phx AZ every thing droops with this heat. I'd be afraid that the monitor would just fall forward. when you add the l brackets are you going to find a way to bolt them into the plastic or just 3m tape only? Anyways, thanks for the video man.
The pressure from the sides and the 3M tape is more than secure for me personally. You could always drill a bracket into the monitor case if you feel the need for some more security
OK so I have a question... Why do you have nudge buttons if the board comes with an accelerometer? I thought nudge buttons for when you didn't have a built in accelerometer. or does that just work for tilt and not actually affect ball movement when you shake the machine?
Awesome! Series. Just got my Star Wars! If it should break I'm ready :) I ordered on of those monitors before they become hard to find lol Do you have a solution for powering on the PC? or are you just going to mount on the bottom and turn on by hand?
Currently I've just got the PC plugged into a power outlet that has a toggle switch and I have the boot up on the PC set to start the moment it receives power. Technically I could splice some wires and connect the surge protector to the stock power switch and turn on the machine that way, but since I'm mounting the PC underneath the cabinet within arms reach I think that would be too much extra effort in the end.
Love your videos. They’re a big help. I’m just wondering if you ran into any issues with the virtuapin kit and DOFlinx?? I can run one or the other but not both. If I try the controller will randomly reset and the plunger just stops working all together.
I have the three monitors set up and buttons are working but can't get the dmd and backglass to display properly. What are the exact settings needed? I used the values that were displayed on screen in Part 1 but that didn't see to do the trick.
I know this is pretty old, but can any help me with the settings for fx3 with this mod and the monitors side by side I have the exact same set up but I can't find the settings that is supposed to be set up in fx3 for the life of me!!😢
Hi. Do you mind posting a link to the crimp terminals and upgraded buttons that you went with? I can't seem to find the right size terminals on Amazon. Thanks!
Hello again. I am starting on these steps today. I have the plunger kit and the KL25Z board. Are you using the Pinscape controller software or simply just the X360CE software. Not sure if I need to use one or the other or if Pinscape is just another alternative. Thanks!
I just realized I (we) are talking about two different pinball machines. There's Arcade1up Marvel Pinball and AT Legend pinball. I got confused. Now which should I get. I like your mods but the Arcade1up just doesn't seem as good. Could be wrong.
Really nice work! I have a question, why did you choose the Arcade1up and not the Legends pinball? I ask because I am looking to buy a pinball machine and I am excited about mod'ing it, but some of the mods you did are already in the Legends unit (upgrade the playfield screen, controller for buttons and plunger, etc.) and based on price it seems like a better deal. Just not sure if I'm missing something, like maybe it was because you owned the Arcadeup unit, or just a big fan, or maybe something big like the cabinet is better made or Legends has an issue you should avoid. Thanks!
I won't. There are already several videos on PinUp, including ones made by the creator of PinUp. It would be silly for me to try and cover something the creator (Nailbuster) has already done.
@COOLTOY I am having issues with the virtuapin plunger kit and was hoping you could answer it. I cut out the T section like you showed in your video. However, when I place the plunger assembly into the hole and connect the included backplate from virtuapin, it doesn’t sit flush against the cabinet. There’s a gap of about half an inch or so. Any clue on what I need to do or how yours is fastened in place?
I had the same issue. I went to Home Despot and bought a cheap package of wooden shims, broke off what I needed, loosened the screws on the plunger, fit in a few shims, and tightened the screws. Works great now.
Hi Doug! How did you get the new plunger to mount flush against the machine. I made the T cutout like you did and I can get the plunger in there and it is flush against the front of the machine, but when I go to put the backplate on to secure it in place, the posts for the screws on the back of the plunger platecome out so far that when I secure the backplate to it, the entire plunger assembly moves back and forth by an 1/2 inch or so. In your video it looks like your backplate is perfectly flush against the cabinet. What am I missing?
Hello, Fantastic tutorial! I'm doing the backglass mod (monitor). I'd love if you can hook me up with a zip file of the fantastic art you've got please. Is this possible? (thanks)
Sorry, more questions. Does the stock plunger analog connection fit into the virtuapin board? Just a lazy questiion really. I figure if I get the virtua pin kit I'll just set the better plunger aside until I feel like making the cut out. But if the connection is no the same I will cut it out lol Also, can you use joy2 key instead of the xbox config? If not, can you map keyboard buttons to the controller numbers? I play VPX and FUture pinball, everything is keyboard based. If the stock encoder etc is good, will it work with PC without the need to buy the virtuapin? Thanks again.
I could not figure out a wiring combination to use with the stock plunger on the KL25Z board that worked. If you want to use the stock plunger you can use something like the geeekpi encoder board that accepts analog inputs as well. You can use joy2key if you want, I used the Xbox config as it supports analog plunger input in fx3.
@@cooltoy Thanks man. I think I will get an arcade 1up. Was going to get a GRS but I think with all the fit and finish and mod possibilities this is a better choice. Thanks for all the help.
Got another question for you. I can't get X360CE to minimize at all on startup. I have PinUp Popper installed and running on startup but everytime X360CE autolaunches, it won't minimize. When I end up coming back from a game, the config utility sticks on top. I've written a bat to minimize it but apparently, there is a bug that makes it crash and I can't get it to work that way. Any tips?
If I remember correctly I just right clicked into that app properties and checked the box to keep it minimized. I believe you can also create a bat file that has start/min C:\whatever path your pc has to the program
@@cooltoy Thanks man! I tried both and couldn't get them to work without the app freezing. I ended up using an earlier build (v3 on their site) and that finally resolved it by placing it in the FX3 folder. Your videos have been amazing and stoked on my arcade 1up pinball build!
Just wondering if I can put another 1up pinball machine electronics into my first cabinet, sharing monitor and buttons by using splitters, two power supplies, run one at a time,so I can mod the other cabinet..??
Cool, not much else to to in lockdown,I only have room for 2 machines,so I figure it's a good starting point,Great looking cabinets.Any special plug required for the monitor ,splitter or just standard stuff.
I just saw the original backglass flashing lights for mars attacks, what is the voltage for the backglass led's and could I use programable led strip lights to replicate the sequence,as well.?
What kind of buttons did you replace the stock ones with? You mentioned adding cherry switches but not listed below. Also with the pc did you need to swap your psu with the 1650 graphics card?
Hey Doug are you having issues with the virtuapin encoder? I’m having a lot of random usb disconnects with it during gameplay. Seems to be a common problem with the virtuapin encoder firmware specifically and they have been non responsive to support questions about it. Just curious if you ran into this same problem.
Hi Doug, I got a sb220q and followed your video but it just does not fit. The bottom of the monitor is too fat and it sticks out. Did you remove the back bezel from the unit or something?
Nope, left the bezel as is and didn’t modify the monitor. You want the front to stick out a little bit because the monitor menu/power buttons are located on the bottom. So you want the front to overhang/stick out a bit like I show in this video to avoid inadvertently squishing the power button on the bottom.
Hello again, I gave an identical setup (been building along with you) and I can't get the plunger to work in all tables. It's works great in bob's burgers and does nothing in medieval madness for example. If you have any advice I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
There should be no reason why it would work in one table and not others in FX3. Though I will say Medieval Madness uses a basic launch and doesn't actually use measure plunges as the original machine just had a basic launch button.
again, it should worth for both types in FX3 regardless. Worst case scenario you could always map the plunger to the Enter key in a program like Joy2Key and get it to work that way for single press launches also
So do you like the 1up better than atgames now that you have it modded with that nice backglass or is the 32" with small backglass and no dmd better than having a small play table, large backglass and dmd?
I enjoy both machines. Wether or not someone prefers having 3 smaller screens vs 2 larger screens would be something only they could answer for themself.

Very entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.
Hi Doug! I just orderd the plunger kit, Did u have to by the button ground wires separate? I didnt see any links for that?
Hi Doug, Just wondering if you have a wiring schematic for the Arcade 1up mod ?
Fantastic work Doug! Next level!!
Thank you!
@COOLTOY Doug, when you added the jpg for the black glass were they in a folder and you just mapped it too the games or when you configure in FX3 there’s is any setting to pick them?
I would also like to know. Thanks.
Cool been looking forward to this. Thanks!
What kind of connectors should I order to solder on to the board? So many options
Awesome mod Doug - Thanks for the great info
Any time
Awesome mods! i love how clean and everything came out. Bravo!
Great video and series!! So have you ever installed a "Launch Ball" button in lieu of the plunger altogether? Just wondering if that might be an easier mod if you dont care about a plunger. Thanks man!!
Button would be far easier than the plunger for sure
I have that same monitor, is the monitor only staying in place mostly due to the sides being press against it? I have used 3m tapes and gorilla tapes and nothing ever stays in place for long here in Phx AZ every thing droops with this heat. I'd be afraid that the monitor would just fall forward. when you add the l brackets are you going to find a way to bolt them into the plastic or just 3m tape only? Anyways, thanks for the video man.
The pressure from the sides and the 3M tape is more than secure for me personally. You could always drill a bracket into the monitor case if you feel the need for some more security
@@cooltoy good to know man. I guess I'll try it out when the cab actually gets here for my to feel in person. Thanks for the reply sir!
OK so I have a question... Why do you have nudge buttons if the board comes with an accelerometer? I thought nudge buttons for when you didn't have a built in accelerometer. or does that just work for tilt and not actually affect ball movement when you shake the machine?
Simple, I like to physically nudge the machine and my wife prefers using the buttons. So now we can do either one and have the same result
Great work. you always do the sickest mods👍
Glad you like them!
Fantastic job mam wish I had the time to focus on projects like this
Awesome!
@@cooltoy Thanks. Makes sense :) Looks like a great mod. I like the route you went with the plunger. More money but less fuss. Time is money!
I want this backbox mod put on the at games body. HDMI switch the monitor to go between the two. Best of both worlds.
lol i was thinking same thing . i was looking it does look easy to build one
Was wondering if you might find a way to install & play Baby Pac-Man pinball using this mod.......THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.
Doug. What video card are you using in your Dell SFF?
I'm using a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 OC Low Profile 4GB card in mine
Love your videos. They’re a big help. I’m just wondering if you ran into any issues with the virtuapin kit and DOFlinx?? I can run one or the other but not both. If I try the controller will randomly reset and the plunger just stops working all together.
haven't experienced that issue myself, sorry
I have the three monitors set up and buttons are working but can't get the dmd and backglass to display properly. What are the exact settings needed? I used the values that were displayed on screen in Part 1 but that didn't see to do the trick.
Sorry, I gave this machine away a long time ago so I can't bring up the settings to tell you
I know this is pretty old, but can any help me with the settings for fx3 with this mod and the monitors side by side I have the exact same set up but I can't find the settings that is supposed to be set up in fx3 for the life of me!!😢
Great work Doug.
Thank you kindly
Hi. Do you mind posting a link to the crimp terminals and upgraded buttons that you went with? I can't seem to find the right size terminals on Amazon. Thanks!
Hi,just wondering what video card you have in your optiplex? Thanks,Rod
Hello again. I am starting on these steps today. I have the plunger kit and the KL25Z board. Are you using the Pinscape controller software or simply just the X360CE software. Not sure if I need to use one or the other or if Pinscape is just another alternative. Thanks!
Using x360ce
Can you show us what monitor you used for the 32" upgrade? Please 😁
I just realized I (we) are talking about two different pinball machines. There's Arcade1up Marvel Pinball and AT Legend pinball. I got confused. Now which should I get. I like your mods but the Arcade1up just doesn't seem as good. Could be wrong.
any idea when you haptics video will be ready to view? Im wondering what kind of hardware/software you will use for that?
I've already posted that video several weeks ago on this channel
Awesome work! Thanks for sharing this.
Favorite table Marvel’s Venom.
That’s one is super fine, I especially like they included Carnage in that table also
Monitor is en route. What specific 3m tape did you use? How large was the mounting bracket? Thanks for your great tutorial!
Just your basic 3M double sided tape found at most major retail stores. Bracket was 1.5” I believe
Amazing job!! looks incredible. Doug, can I ask what are your backglass settings within FX3 cabinet mode? Thaks Bud
KNOCK KNOCK!
Who’s there?
30,000!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 #YouDeserveIt
thank you kindly!
Thanks!
I own both machines and modded both
@@cooltoy Thanks, looks like I need to subscribe and go watch your other videos.
Great vid. I'm looking to buy one of these and mod. Are all the monitors connected via HDMI? Thanks
I have two connected via HDMI and q connected via display port as that’s the connections my video card offers
@@cooltoy Thanks for the reply. I got everything answered by watching both your mod vids :)
When do you think you'd be doing a video on the PinUp Popper menu system?
I won't. There are already several videos on PinUp, including ones made by the creator of PinUp. It would be silly for me to try and cover something the creator (Nailbuster) has already done.
This is incredible 👏
@COOLTOY I am having issues with the virtuapin plunger kit and was hoping you could answer it. I cut out the T section like you showed in your video. However, when I place the plunger assembly into the hole and connect the included backplate from virtuapin, it doesn’t sit flush against the cabinet. There’s a gap of about half an inch or so. Any clue on what I need to do or how yours is fastened in place?
I'm in the same boat with the kit and the half in gap between the backplate and the mdf... did you find a solution???
Have you got any answer to your question ?
@@jeromelambert1048 I ended up putting cardboard on the inside to fill the gap. I even emailed the company and never heard back from them.
Shims from a hardware store will work.
great job man
thank you very much!
Where did you get your back glass images????
Excellent mod series with tutorials. Looking forward to part 3! So the back monitor gap is ~19.6" X 11.9" ?
sure is
Got another question for you.
What's the name of the headers you used and connectors for the buttons? Thank you!
Female terminal crimp connector
@@cooltoy Thank you!
Dude, I really could use some help doing this.. and youre close by.. would I be able to pick your brain sometime in the future??
Just wondering if I can put another 1up pinball machine electronics into my first cabinet, sharing monitor and buttons by using splitters, two power supplies, run one at a time,so I can mod the other cabinet..??
technically yes that can be done, but that's going to be a lot of extra work
Cool, not much else to to in lockdown,I only have room for 2 machines,so I figure it's a good starting point,Great looking cabinets.Any special plug required for the monitor ,splitter or just standard stuff.
nothing special
I just saw the original backglass flashing lights for mars attacks, what is the voltage for the backglass led's and could I use programable led strip lights to replicate the sequence,as well.?
How did you set it up to change the backglass each time you change a game. I'm stumped on that.
Did you do cabinet mode?
What kind of buttons did you replace the stock ones with? You mentioned adding cherry switches but not listed below.
Also with the pc did you need to swap your psu with the 1650 graphics card?
They are Happ buttons as I stated in the video. No need to change the psu for this 1650
Thanks. Love the video and looking forward to part 3.
Hey Doug are you having issues with the virtuapin encoder? I’m having a lot of random usb disconnects with it during gameplay. Seems to be a common problem with the virtuapin encoder firmware specifically and they have been non responsive to support questions about it. Just curious if you ran into this same problem.
haven't experienced this myself.
@@cooltoy Hmm wonder if it’s just a bad encoder… wish they would respond to my support request, gonna try their phone number tomorrow.
@@cooltoy thanks, I get it now. I wasn't able to clearly see the overhang in your video so I assumed it was flush. Still looks good!
Hi,just wondering what video card you have in the optiplex?
GTX 1650 lo profile
Love your videos! I just did this mod, is there anyway you could share that PNG file of the original backglass?
sure thing, send me an email cooltoy_23@yahoo.com and I'll send you the file I made.
Hi. Do the images on the back glass come automatically with FX3? Is there any settings needed? thank you.
No, you have to download the images yourself and then put them in a particular folder on your pc for FX3 to recognize and use the images
Hi Just wondering with the klz 25 board installed does the haptic still work on flippers ?
cheers
If you are using doflinx yes
@@cooltoy .Thank you so much mate muchly appreciated .
@@cooltoy that may be the issue then. Hmm, odd
Any idea how to make the plunger work for both types?
again, it should worth for both types in FX3 regardless. Worst case scenario you could always map the plunger to the Enter key in a program like Joy2Key and get it to work that way for single press launches also
Nice - very impressive!!!
Thanks!
@@cooltoy Oh, so the atgames backglass monitor is larger than the backglass you put into the 1up?
I’d rather have the Atgames one, since the playing field is closer to the size of an actual pinball machine.
How are you powering on your monitor? The buttons are no longer accessible, correct? TIA
Surge protector has everything plugged into it. All I have to do is hit the toggle switch and everything comes one at once
@@cooltoy Cool thanks.
