The great thing about Chartwell is that not only do you feel the history but it’s also so obviously a great home.

Yes - the dining room with its views is one of the loveliest rooms I've ever been in. It's no wonder WSC loved Chartwell so much.

@@simongleaden2864Agreed. You sometimes see rooms in stately homes and think they are ornate and grand, but no thank you - too much like a theatre set design - but the Chartwell dining room is peace personified.

I think you would need hours to take everything in. To think of the world leaders who have visited Chartwell House. To see the historical signatures on the documents awarded and letters sent to Sir Winston Churchill. Just to appreciate the books he read which influenced his speeches.

Churchill purchased Chartwell for 5.000 pounds, the house was in such a poor condition that the price would have been higher without the house - the agent took it into account that he will have to spend additional money to demolish the ruinous structure. Instead, Churchill hired an architect and renovated the house, at the cost of 18.000 pounds. Chartwell was way too costly for Churchill, and he did much of the upkeep himself, like putting on rooftiles on that breakneck-steep high roof, wearing a long coat, bowl hat, suit and necktie, of which I have a picture.

Even a beautiful country home like this must seem like ramshackle to Prince Charles considering the castles and palaces he’s used to.

He lives in Highgrove House, which is (compared to the palaces) quite a humble little property, really.

But look up the Marlborough Blenheim which is an absolutely massive place where Churchill was born and raised ... both these men grew up in massive homes yet actually prefer something a little bit more
      ' modest ' , I guess we could say .

He was much more than that. Born into an aristocratic family, he was a soldier, a painter, and the highest paid journalist of the 1920s and 30s, a Nobel prize winning author, a historian, a bricklayer AND a politician (the longest serving one ever).

Why is Charles constantly fiddling with his cufflinks ? I hope he doesn't start fiddling with them during his CORONATION. Perhaps someone can give him a Xanex to calm him down. .. well lucky it's only his cufflinks.
