Okay, this absolutely doesn't count since, at the time, literally nobody knew how valuable those comics were going to become. If it were someone in modern times willfully destroying Action Comics #1, then yea, be upset, but kids who thought they were only worth a dime wouldn't know better so there's no use getting upset about it now.

Dargonhuman not to mention by this point in their life they’d be so old they wouldn’t really be impacted by the money they’d gain from the comic

Scott. I enjoyed your video, as usual. But tearing up a issue of Action Comics #1, Superman's first appearance?! But who would have known it would be worth a lot of money years later? The same could be said for Superman #1, which came out a year later in 1939! Even if I could locate these two classic Superman Comics, I couldn't afford them with my income. I'll settle for a reprint!😂😄

@@michaelhughes8057 In Superman #1 the back cover (which had a splash picture of Superman) was designed to be cut out and framed, The newest DC Anniversary reprint of Superman #1 has this announcement encouraging fans to do this to their comic, I always wonder just how many fans back then actually did this?

Because at the time the comic wasn't really worth anything. It's like asking why anyone sold an ounce of gold for $38 in 1970 when you can get almost $1300 now. Also the only reason those comics are worth so much is because people didn't keep them making one rear today.

At the time it was not priceless. It was just another form of cheap entertainment for children. There was no way to predict that in the future there would be people obsessed enough to pay millions of dollars for a 5 or 10 cent comic book.

Honestly back in the day I doubt anyone would have known superman was going to become such a huge part of comics as we know it. Besides comics are for having fun so I'd feel like having a pristine comic would kinda suck. Granted most are reprinted by now anyways but I buy comics to read them so I'd just be miserable to be like "oh I'll keep this in its sleeve forever because it might be worth something one day" it's like buying a bike and never riding it

“So what would you do if you had a time machine?” Action comics No. 1. I would go to the day Action Comics No. 1 was released, and buy a copy and come back. Buy 100's of copies and flood the market and make it worth much less! Everyone loses! Time travel always ruins the time continuum! At worse you would end up back in some strange place that would not be the time line which you left from.

To be fair though, people in 1930s back then didn't knew the importance & value of these comics now. We can talk like this because its now. But back then, who knew superman would be so popular? It could end up in one of the pages of the regrettable superheroes book. The people back then didn't think it would be a piece of history in 70 years or something. But, because of all the circumstances in the following decades, the war, the popularity, etc, it becomes a piece of history we all know today. But, when its just an action comics no. 1, its just a usual thing for them & us. What if we still have many millions of action comics no 1 today? Well, it wouldn't be like the death of superman case, but it would be nowhere near as valuable as we precieve now.

Love you guys Nerrdsync, interesting history. My dad has similar stories, like how when he was little his grandma got him the empty box the year star wars came out, but sent it back to the store after finding out there were no toys in it. He also got a chewie with green arms that christmas, and right after boxing day traded it in for a regular one. He did keep all his star wars toys' packaging though, till he moved out and his mom, while trying to help, threw them all out. My dad also had the entire 123 run of Marvel's star wars comics back in the day, but most were destroyed when his little brother came along. Millions potentially, flushed away. But he has no regrets; my dad always said the joy he got out of his toys, and then watching me get the same joy out of them, was worth all the money in the world.

Interesting video, however I don't see the contest as being some big crime against nerddom. No one knew back then that this at the time one off story would be the genesis of comic book superheroes or would be worth what it is worth now, in fact an argument could be made that them destroying their copies helped increase the books eventual value. Since one of the main reasons it's such a rare and expensive find is due to there not being very many copies left out in the world.

Whenever I see someone bemoaning throwing away, recycling, using, reusing, whatever something long long ago, I always feel compelled to point out that what is valuable now wasn't then and the very fact they did this makes it valuable and rare.
Kids from the 30s probably would have traded, given away, or lost their comics by the time they came to adulthood and the comic was worth something, so the fact they drew on it and possibly gained some small bit of pleasure from sending it off to the publisher is not something I lose any sleep over.

Anything from my youth that required me to remove something or cut something out, I never did because it just felt wrong. However, although condition would still matter, that comic book would probably not be worth as much if it hadn't included that tear out section.

Maybe you could do a video each to do with Detective Comics #1 and Sensational Comics #1 if there are interesting tales like this one, Scott. I think DC could get a writer to make a good Crisis-esque tale for Superman in the DC Universe inspired by this occurrence.

ah my grandfather Refused to destroy his copy and he stored it in pristine condition, he even showed me his copy, He said He was keeping it because he knew lots of people would destroy that comic, So I have a pristine condition one, no I won't sell it, as it's something from my grandparent who passed away years ago, no way I'm selling something he held onto for decades, That's just disrespectful to the effort and time he made to keep it in a condition that makes it look as it did the day he bought it

Grandpa: Yeah I won a nice big one dollar in that contest, kept the comic as a memento all these years, spent those winnings on the best candy ever.
Junior: Grandpa it's worth over 3 million dollars
Grandpa (with tears in his eyes): don't remind me Junior...don't remind me

Had they not destroyed these copies there would be that many more available and they would be worth slightly less. This is why many modern comics and toys will never have this kind of value. To many people saving them and creating a surplus.

For something to become valuable and sought after, it must first have a phase of worthlessness where the stock is seen to have no value, usually finding itself in the garbage which eventually adds to the scarcity and rarity in the future. That's why this bird cage lining became a sought after item and those Pop Vinyls are the new Beanie Babies.

From the click-bait title, I thought it was a recent story from people dumb enough to destroy a 3 millions dollars comic... But I really enjoyed the history lesson. Good job as always.

I wonder if any of these people ever saw a copy sell for big money and just felt like killing themselves for doing this. I mean I've had those moments over things that weren't even that big a deal and this is literally a fortune we're talking about. LOL

Lots of people threw away or burned comics. I imagine plenty of people lamented that fact when the learned how valuable they were.
