This was quite helpful. I know this is old, but thank goodness youtube saves them. Thank you. I would suggest however to advise people to unplug their batteries first so they don't turn it on or short something putting liquid in there by mistake. I'd also use alcohol instead of window cleaner as it dries much faster, and cleaner. I use this all the time working on computers.
Kevin, I can't thank you enough for your help! My Controller had the same issue. it was becoming dangerous for me to be home alone as my wheelchair would not start anymore, and I had to leave it on just to keep it going, when it was on! I did EXACTLY what you told me to-do and it worked! PS when you're Mom's controller wouldn't work the first time was probably bc there was cotton on the contacts. used your "Easer" Method and that's what was on mine! :) Thanks again, make sure you tell your mom what a great son you are! Thanks Again!

thanks for the video with the great ideas. I have the exact same controller 50963.02 for my mom's shoprider smartie which was purchased in 2011 but failed somehow and we bought a new identical replacement chair. I tried this method, both with (1) the rubbing alcohol/swabs - which did not work as it did not work with your video. Then (2) pencil eraser method but that did not work either. The thing is powerless as I plugged it into the new Smartie chair which of course works fine with the new controller it came with. Also put the old controller into the old original chair but not sure if the battery is alive there. Not sure what the problem can be, a lot of blank gunk was removed with the alcohol swab technique.
I have a couple of comments for you. The buttons that you first cleaned Are not metal. They are a conductive material but a porous material. My first encounter with cleaning the internals of a remote were similar to yours. Upon reassembling the remote, the buttons didn't work. I later found out that the cleaner (alcohol) soaked into the button material. It took a day or 2 for the buttons to dry. Then they worked perfectly. I think these button can get dirty but I dont think they wear out. The rubber element that acts as the outer button can develop pinholes that allow moisture inside the case. Im not sure if they are still available on ebay, but you can replace all the buttons at one time. Its basically the same as applying a decal. Of course, you have to remove the original rubber segment that hold the buttons first. You also have to be careful when using alcohol as a cleaner. Alcohol can absorb moisture. When the alcohol evaporates, you can be left with standing water. So, its wise to leave your case open until everything is dry inside perhaps overnight.
I'm pretty sure that the tips of the buttons inside that make contact with the board, are graphite. I too learned from having issues with TV remotes. Best way I found is to clean the rubber pad and those graphite tips with dish soap or baby shampoo and a soft tooth brush, rinse hot and air dry for a while b4 reassembly.
Thank you! I have been working on this same issue, today, with no luck. I just watched your video, and I am going to try the eraser trick. Fingers crossed, lol.

Kevin Twiner after watching this video I went back with my Dremel and a nylon brush to clean the contacts but if that doesn't work I also noticed two small contact holes on the circuit board that I'll solder some wires to and put a momentary button on it if needed. I'm gonna try jumping those two contacts with a wire and see if that does anything before I get too far into it.
The adhesive on the button layout will allow you to put a new set of buttons on if you need. Just sourcing the parts is horrible for older chairs. Great to hear you have soldering skills ..use pleanty of flux and remember to clean it up afterwards. Best of luck
Kevin Twiner ya I learned how to solder while I was still in grade school. I've already chose to mount the new button where the yellow tag is on yours but only if the cleaning doesn't work. the chair is still outside on my trailer and I don't feel like going out there till later after I sleep (I work nights).
I got it working. I soldered some small wires to the button contacts and mounted a new momentary button now it turns on/off just fine. I also found that in a pinch the rubber power button can be removed and something metal can be put in the hole to bridge the contacts and get the chair going again.
I have a Hoveround MPV5 with three red light, four yellow and two green lights that do not flash. New batteries and chair works great. When I got this chair, all lights were green but when batteries ran down, I charge them. That is when these light can on. I have bought new batteries but light are stil the same. What's up?
I have a question if the jazzy scooter with the light bar at the top of the joystick. When the chair is turned on and the charger pushed in does that array of LEDs go over and back and forth to show that it's charging?
Thanks Kev, I hope this works for me. I just had new batteries put in tonight, and it still won't come on so now I'm going to take your advice! God bless!

Hi Kevin, Great video and easy to follow. What I need to know is what needs to be done when this part is being replaced with a new one, how would that be done with the flat ribbon wiring that runs in between the two? How does it disconnected and then reconnect again into the new one? I would think it is just a push or pull to dislodge it and then reinstall it. Those are pretty expensive control modules. And from the looks of quality circuitry that's probably why. The housings are pretty basic, alcohol as a cleaner could be corrosive, or caustic to some. Mainly from disolving plastics. There's a electronics cleaner in a spray can that doesn't leave any residue and works pretty good. Safe on all electronics. If I find the can I'll put it in here
