I absolutely love the Derwent Drawing pencils! They are fantastic for nature scenes and animal portraits and as you said, great on toned paper. And with the limited palette they will always create a cohesive colour scheme in any artwork or colouring page.
I don’t know if you fixed the issue with the Derwent tins, but I also had trouble keeping them on…there’s a really simple fix (that also works on other similar metal tins, like a watercolour set of mine). The lids have machine-punched metal bits sticking inward, and they stay on by going over the lip of the edges on the metal base. You just literally have to bent the edges of the lid in slightly, so that the metal bits catch better on the lip of the base. They’ll now stay on as snug as you like. It’s really just that simple! ;)
I’ve had the Derwent Drawing pencils in and out of my shopping cart for months now, so this was perfect! Thanks for helping me make up my mind. Looking forward to purchasing this coloring book too!
I use the Derwent Drawing pencils for all my original animal artwork, they're nicknamed the "Fur and Feathers set" for good reason :D I've been using them for years and never had a tip snap off, that's really unusual. Loved your colour choices on this image, made him pop off the page beautifully.
Ooh I love these pencils! I have the full set, it’s not much bigger at 24 pencils, but they’re gorgeous. I have used them along with my other pencils in my artwork (animals mostly) but I’m thinking of trying out a whole piece just with these pencils because the palette looks so cohesive and beautiful on its own! I’ll have to download that coloring page, it’s so cute
Hello we are in Lockdown again Steve and Jen love you guys so much God Bless Always heeps 😇😊😇 It is alwayz cool watching you both. ❤️❤️ From Aotearoa NZ.
Thank you for review, i have tone paper so im going to try these pencils in that sketch book....lovey art work by the artist....well done with the color combo....mikelle art mom...👩🎨🎨✍
I have the 24 set and did a challenge for myself. Use only the pencils in the set to color a page. The set is well balanced. And yes, the chinese white is awesome. Great video!
I never heard of these pencils until recently and this what i was looking for all my life. I love derwent for that reason they have a broad selection of colors and i'm planning on buying these for myself along with a toned sketch book
Thanks for your videos, I watch them all and I really appreciate the fact that you present the properties of the products and take them to task. You put the good, bad or unfortunate things about them and leave the decision of whether or not we get them to us, thanks!
I can't find this info anywhere so maybe you would know if you used them for so long: were they water-soluble at some point? Because I have a 15 year old Derwent Drawing 67 Ivory Black with the same brown barrel (no cap on the end) and that one is water-soluble - not just a little, it dissolves very well. I only bought that one at the time and now I'm curious when they changed that.
@@NelaDunato I tried washing over whats left of my origional black & yeah to a degree the colour moves but only so much as it spreads a hue around your main mark. If memory serves me right around the same time there were also a chunky sketchy type set of earthy colour watercolour pencils on the market but these weren't rexel Cumberland possibly daler not sure, I live in Scotland, water activated sketchy pencils were never a great idea in our part of the Highlands where sketching outside almost always requires an umbrella & rapidly deployed plastic bag over your drawing board.
@@artbyashley6613 Thanks for trying it out! :) The one I have is fully water-soluble, on par with Inktense. It definitely says "Derwent • Drawing" on it. So strange that I can't find any info on it! Ha, I can imagine that they wouldn't be popular in your area :)
Hi Jennifer, I'm a huge fan of Derwent, so I checked out their website and I bought the 24 Drawing and the 36 Procolour for a total cost of $96.05. Had a coupon and free shipping. They will be here in a couple weeks can't wait. Love your videos, give little Rose a kiss for me.
I felt your pain! One of mine broke as I was doing a first impression searching. It was my second to last one and I was loving them. Well, I still love them and am happy I listened to your recommendation (as always) :) I have my graphitints arriving next week.
I want those pencils and I want that coloring book!!!! Aaaaaahhhhh! So beautiful. Thank you for sharing such a fantastic video. Btw your husband is so gorgeous!! Get it gurl!!! Much love💚♥️
This is definitely on my wish list I hope to get one day. I have Derwent artist colouring pencils 72 set in the wooden box. I also will be adding your swatch books in colour pages and black are so cool 😎
I really enjoyed this video! I think I will be getting these pencils & I love the coloring book too! I am really looking forward to the “Battle of the white pencils”. Thanks😃
Derwent was the first brand of drawing pencils I ever invested in back in Highschool when I lived in England. I have never tried their color pencils however beyond just the lead sets. No idea why not. I have a huge full set of Prismacolors! I am excited for this video. Ohhhh I adore these colors too, the earth tones are gorgeous! I need these!
I bought a few portrait tones open stock in a local store, mostly because of your recommendation :) They are wonderful and make a very nice complement to Polychromos.
I finally got my set of 24 Derwent Drawing Pencils after getting lost for weeks only to find they are most definitely seconds. Amazon Au sold them but they came from the USA. Well over half are off centre. 2 have all the white writing so smudged I had to look them up to do the swatches and name them. On top of that the wood is not smooth and looks like cheap pulverised compacted wood and one has even chipped off the outer brown coating after sharpening it. I have so many sharpeners and all top quality to ensure my pencils are always treated with good, sharp blades. I’ve used a helical sharpener, battery operated, Swordfish hand sharpener and KUM all in an effort to ensure I protect the pencils after seeing what happened after sharpening the first 3 or 4. I could return them but now I’d have to pay 50% more as the price has risen that much. I don’t know if a new set would be any better to boot if I did try to return them as there was no indication they were not in perfect condition when advertised. I’m very disappointed in Derwent as they are the company selling them to Amazon. I have nearly all Derwent’s various sets bar Chromaflow and this is the only set that I can honestly say I wish I’d never bothered buying. Just a warning as others have had the same issues. UPDATE: I returned the pencils to Amazon who as usual were great with an easy process and refund. I then bought a set from a reputable art store and these were an entirely different set. Very happy now. Obviously these are not seconds. Fabulous pencils.
That's virtually a crime. I have regrettably had issue with Amazon too, with merchandise that is flying under false colors. Thankfully you retraced your steps and got your proper pencils; it would have been truly terrible if the experience had scared you off these wonderful pencils. I wish you countless hours of pleasure with them.
I thrifted the full set, brand new, from Fb marketplace for $22. Brown is my absolute favorite color and the earthiness of these pencils is right up my alley.
The Derwent site has these pencils for 45.00 for the Set of 24 plus a code for 15% off w/ free shipping (less than Blicks & Amazon). My order came to 41.00 & change for the Set of 24. Just thought I'd pass it along. Have always been a fan of the Chinese White & Ivory Black so after your demo I need to test these out myself Love your new Coloring Bliss Book...!
I really like the coloring book. I’m not usually one that wants to color figures on my pages, but I like the mythology so much I think I’d enjoy. See you on payday. 😉
I wanted Derwent Drawing pencils when I first started nature journaling, many many years ago. They were too expensive for me at the time. Time passed and I finally bought them 3 years ago and I love them! They are perfect for nature sketching! Edit: I have the set of 24 and wish there were more!
This Chinese White 7200 is so amazing for blending. The other colors are very dull and on the dark side although I’m sure you could find a use for them. They are the same thick, almost paste like creaminess. I do use the Yellow Ochre a lot. It’s getting very short. These are like my emergency pencils. If I’ve caused a wax bloom these will still lay another layer on top without issue providing of course you can color coordinate. The Light Sienna 1610 is beautiful. I have the FS.
I enjoy using them for backgrounds. They are very waxy but with O MS they spread out. Really though and honestly the Lightfast carries many of the same colors like Ruby, Chocolate, etc. The Lightfast having Mars orange and Mars like grey is similar to the Derwent Drawing and the Luminance grey violet. I use the Sienna all the time and the white is great. So myself I do not need all of them. Soloway blue is a light cool grey. I very rarely use the light green shade colors. So if you have all the Lightfast you have essentially the ones that would be used. Blick’s has had a Lightfast sale for $2.05. Oms is definitely needed with the Drawing ones to make smooth backgrounds.
I find when I use my Derwent pencils, I have to plan colors ahead more carefully than using Faber Castell, Prismacolor, or even Crayola. Those brands have a more even selection even in smaller sets, but Derwent's colors are pretty but can be biased and have selection 'holes.'
Currently 15% at the Derwent website and free shipping. Don't know how long this is on. I ordered my 24 set earlier this week and am waiting for them to arrive any day now. I also have FSS. No vaccine for that!
Nice . I just LOVE this set on all three paper types. Question: Why not give your swatch sections a full SPACE between different brands? Want to BREATHE…
Thank You for doing this video! I have become curious about these drawing pencils as well as the Derwent Colorsoft pencils. I'm wondering if these as the same formulation as the Colorsoft. Have you ever used them? If you have used the Derwennt Colorsoft pencils do they function in the same way these drawing pencils do?
Hi Kathleen, these are different from Coloursoft. The difference in pigmentation is most obvious on dark papers. I find that Coloursoft are quite transparent, and the white pencil is not as bright as the Drawing white. All Drawing pencils are opaque. You could combine the two for an extended range of colors, if that's what you're after. But when it comes to neutral shades, Drawing pencils win hands down.
I love to see you coloring... and if you think those pencils are pricey, don't ever come to Brazil hoping to buy art material .. you wouldn't believe how expensive it is to be an artist here, unfortunately...
Amazing, I always think a limited pallet draws a picture together to create a calming effect. Thank you for sharing. 💐
I absolutely love the Derwent Drawing pencils! They are fantastic for nature scenes and animal portraits and as you said, great on toned paper. And with the limited palette they will always create a cohesive colour scheme in any artwork or colouring page.

Bonjour ! C' est magnifique!!!
Vous très doute!!!
Are these the same as Derwent Graphitint pencils?
No
The graphitint are tinted graphite and are also water soluble. Totally different.
Those Derwent pencils were made for these earthy/fantasy pictures!
I use them to draw fantastic creatures like goblins, elves, treefolks, fairies.
the full set is 24 pencils, they are all beautiful colours
Beautiful, thank you.. You make a very lovely couple, still in love, I wish you well, blessings
very pretty but a little out of my price range. also wish I had someone awesome like Steve lol

The forest old man character reminds me of that old nasty wizard from the hobbits movies
It took me 15 minutes to realize the pencils are color-capped at the other end.
I could live with just Prisma's and Derwent Drawing pencils.
Can u believe this color pencils only cost ₹2000(24 dollars ) in India
I LOVE Derwent Drawing but i'm disappointed in Derwent Artist 😔.
