You make everything effortless - I guess that’s what years of experience gives! I’m so glad I found your channel a month or so back. Now I’ve got decent lessons in plastering, a decent Chippy - Robin Clevett, and James, the plumber., all from YT and you’re all excellent at explaining the shit parts of the job rather than glossing over it. Now all I need is an electrician. All the best Kirk and keep up the brilliant videos.

Watched a lot of your great videos as I was wanting to have a go at plastering my garden room ...... Thanks for all the great tips, I'm never going to be a professional plasterer, just an enthusiastic diy person!
When I use the trowel I leave lines on the toe and the heal... Drop plaster all over the shop and struggle to work quick enough to get it all on the wall before it starts going off
I'm on my 6th wall now so getting the hang of it better than my first super stressful wall.
A few items that you didn't mention and I haven't seen you use are an old table cloth to but under the wall that's being plastered to catch the large amount of dropped plaster and a mop and bucket to tidy up the aftermath!!!
Also next time I attempt a ceiling I'm wearing a hat as 4 walls in my first ceiling was challenging with plaster all over me, in my hair and over my arms. The floor looked like 6am at a festival rave because of all the plaster I had stepped in on the floor!
Anyway I'm not doing a ceiling again until I have done a lot more walls and i would wear a hat!
Couldn't have done what I have done without your videos and superb advice though.
    Thanks 👍

In general on the walls( from the skirting up) we work on the idea that on the first coat the muck on the trowel looks like a pasty and on the second coat the muck on the trowel looks like a pancake.

That's it Jamie, you just get a feel for it with the water, every job is different and depending how much you've got on the wall, sometimes you might find it easier with a bit of water on the 2nd and 3rd... sometimes you don't need it.
I just go with how it feels.
If you ever need water when you're flattening in then that's a sign that your in a but of trouble and need to speed the hell up.

If you fasten the screws below the surface of the existing wall. Then plaster over them as normal. Then when you're finished run a magnet over the area to find the screws and just expose them with a screwdriver. This way there are no screws to work around.

I’m in agreement with everyone else’s comments that yours is the best “ real world” take on plastering. Can I just ask that if you did want to use a superflex or plastic trowel that it would only be on the very last trowel. Appreciate that you don’t go down this road yourself and on the basis of what your showing us there is no need but just inquisitive. Thanks and keep em coming.

I noticed your very old school with just using the one ridged marshalltown trowel. No flexi trowels or plastic speed skims or plastic on the very last trowel. I guess we get used to doing things the way we were taught?

    • @Onthetrowel

To be honest I usually just stick to my carbon steel for most things, that being said I literally have loads of different flexi trowels and spatulas and I will do separate videos on them at some point but I just wanted to keep this vid as simple as poss.
I remember when I was doing building site work about 20 years ago and we used to make speed skims out of cavity closers. We all used to say we should get a patent on it... years later someone did (nobody I know by the way)

2nd coat - when it leaves imprints but doesn't stick to your fingers
1st flatten (no water) - when it leaves imprints but doesn't stick to your fingers.
2nd flatten (water) - when just about leaves imprints and is firmer.
Polish (no water) - when it's firmed up.

Here is the top tip. Screw the screws into the wall for the radiator markup roughly where they are very quickly with a right angle. Just the heights and leave a small mark on the skirting or floor. Then after you have finished, you can find them again using a powerful magnet. This saves hours and leaves a flatter finish. 25kg magnet

Liked the tip about the bottom skirting area about it being higher suction making plaster at the brick area dry quicker so will pay attention to that in future. Had a Question...the first and second coat of plaster are these the same batch but just thinned down with more water on second coat? Or are they two completely separate batches of plaster?

Great video buddy. Can you do another in the future where you go extremely close up to the wall to check the state of it with your fingers? A few have attempted this but they don't go close enough imo. I mean like the lens like 3" in away from the wall.

Hi Kirk, regarding the timing of when to put the second on. Will it make a huge difference if you left it too long before the second coat? I remember the first wall I plastered, and it took me soo long by the time I put it all on, flattened it and cleaned out my bucket that an hour and a half had already passed and it was close to two hours before I put my second coat on lol. I painted it all myself as well. Three years on and the wall is completely fine. So I was thinking what is the major issue if one were to apply their second after the recommended time you advised in the video. I’ve done this several times (leaving it way after the recommended time) until I got faster and have never had an issue. Please can you elaborate on what the negatives are when you do leave it too long before the second coat?
    Thanks
    Bee

Just depends, if your just starting out then probably best to mix up fresh, I personally just knock the old stuff up with a splash of water but it sets faster this way

@@Louisthesaxman1 you only plaster corners and joints, way faster, and easier.but Depends on pov, multi finish plaster takes 2-3 days to dry plus a day to plaster a room B4 you can paint, tape and joint takes 2 days and u can paint it straight away after you sand, plasterboard is a finished surface, no need to skim, it saves loads of ££ on materials.
