Make it look so easy! 🥵 Tried my first wall today, started off getting the mix too wet so it was sliding off the Hawk. Not sure if that was because I put too much water spray on the Hawk first or if the mix was just too wet. I guess I was scared of it going off too quick if it was a thicker mix. I was plastering over a wall that had had chucks out of it, mixture of old plaster, bonding of some sort and maybe cement. Found it all really hard and messy! Little chucks of old wall finding it's way onto the trowel. I was also struggling to see the best way to get it off the board onto the trowel!. Beginners error after watching your video. Maybe I never attempted to use the board to do that because the mix was too wet!? So many skills involved in this job while the clock is ticking. Big respect to you guys who make this look easy!

Hi Kirk Love your videos.we have a ceiling with a horrible pattern like in this property and want to bring it back to a flat finish.do you have any videos on how to tackle this type of job? Or just use the same principles?
agree with board finish, more fat with multi, am from days of podgers bike cog on end of pole, mix with stick first, and ya need to learn ya stokes first, record 2+ 1 40 bags float and skim one day, old days drag n bath, 8x4 put up 1man , am now 60yrs old 7 spinal surgery's, old school no brush angle trowel .
Really appreciate your vids. A few q's. 1. What's your opinion on using spatula/speedskim for flattening? 2. Can you recommend trowel sizes for a DIY'er? 3. Tips on angle/pressure whilst laying Vs flattening Vs polishing (perhaps an idea for a vid?) Thanks man
Hey Zephyr let's see 1. Beginners can use a speedskim if they can afford the outlay, stay away for spatulas until your better as they can cause issues if you don't know when to use them. 2. Just go for a 14" marshalltown 3. You will feel the difference if you are scraping it and you will see how much your taking off. You can't really teach exactly how much pressure as you will just know. Just the same as you know how tight to squeeze someone's hand when you shake hands
Thank you so much mate, you're basically providing an opportunity for us to repair our house, which we would still be unable to do, if I had to seek out a professional as we live in a remote area, and its just very hard getting guys up here. If you're reading these comments by any chance I was wondering If I could ask something.. So, if I have a very old wall, that is fairly structurally sound, but has a finish coat and a (this is it) very old layer of paint that I cannot fully clean of the wall ( I mean as much as I scrub and scratch with the trowel more dust just keeps comin off) would I be able to seal it properly with a deep penetrating bond enough, in order to apply a new finishing coat of gypsum plaster ? Do I have to use either a net or a glass fiber sheet to make sure it sticks properly or is there no chance at all for this to work? Thank you regardless, and hope you're doing well!
Use stabilising solution to stop it from dusting. Then seal with SBR the mesh is more to stop cracks rather than to help it stick. Hope this helps mate
Brilliant videos Kirk. You make it easy to understand. I’m not sure I would get the same results but I live in a two hundred year old house and the outside walls are stone/slate and muck and the interior are lathe and plaster, so if they are not perfect I wouldn’t mind. Some of the walls have been artexed. I think they all need plastering. Would I still use multi finish or do I need to do something else. The thing I worry about is everyone tells me that stone walls need to be able to breath. Many thanks. Pint bought. Cheers 🍺
@@Onthetrowel Kirk. We are in a conservation area so we can’t drastically change the outside appearance, but we can do what we like to the inside. In fact our house was originally two one up and one down houses which were joined and then had either an extension put on the back a long long time ago as it looks a similar age or it was a back to back type thing, which would be unusual as we live in cornwall.
@Barry Nevill OK so genuinely I wouldn't put any gypsum based materials in your home, originally it would of been a lime plaster that was used and the house will have been built with that in mind. Lime is actually easier to use than the standard plaster we have now. So in a nutshell what I'm trying to say is... stick with lime, it will be better for the building and it will be easier for you to work with aswell. I would highly recommend that you use this company because they know their stuff and will tell you the best products to use for whatever you want to do and you will have the peace of mind that it is breathable and won't get damp www.lime.org.uk/
@@Onthetrowel Kirk. Many thanks for the advice. I would assume that the technique of applying the lime plaster is similar to how you do it in your videos?
@Barry Nevill yes mate, exactly the same techniques but slightly different process, they will tell you exactly what to do with each product but if you get stuck then come back to me in the comments Barry or email me. My email is in the description of the channel 😀👍👍
When you over skim your ceilings and walls. Do you use neat SBR or do you water it down ? Iv always used grit but you don't half use alot more gear. Wanting to try your method. Cheers
Hi previous video said the second coat consistancy should thinner that the first coat..? Wouldn't this weaken the plaster is this correct or is it the same mix ratio and consistency or is slightly sloppier better..?
It don’t look like u got a reply so here’s what I do and it works for me speedskim just after uve laid the first coat on ( the flatter the wall for the second coat the better) and repeat it again after uve laid the second coat as well it flattens in large areas far quicker than with the trowel so buys u time then when it picks up a little u go back to the trowel and carry on as Kirk did u don’t use the speedskims again on that set it’s all trowel work hope that helps
Can I use the same method with a lime based plaster, like the seciltek? My house is an old build and I have been discourage from using a gypsum based product, like the multifinish, over the original lime.
My brother plastered our living room he wasn’t a plasterer but didn’t do a bad job UNTIL ….. I came to paper 🤦🏼♀️ it looks like he’s put it on but then taking it back off mainly from the bottom of the wall as the skirting board is I good half inch away from the wall 😱😂😂 so my question is …. Can I just try and fix it by putting finishing plaster over what’s done to get it even ? Love your videos
hi. love the vids. I'm a complete novice. need to know if when it comes to the polish, do you use a dry trowel or wet the trowel first? Thanks in advance.
Hi Mate! Just wanted to say fantastic work that you're putting into your channel! I've already learnt so much about different products to use and what wall preparation method to use. When looking for advice out there you always get told leave it to the professionals which I know is true for most cases but videos like yours gives a DIY'er the confidence to try skim that one or two walls that you can't afford to fork out for at the time. I'm sure silly question but have you done any silicone rendering like K-Rend? Would be great to see a run through of the process! Sending some beers your way for sure!
@On the trowel I'm just starting out a home DIY project of skimming walls. Skimmed yesterday and was pleased with the result. Woke up this morning and the plaster had blown all over. I scrapped it off and started again. The plaster came off like Easter egg chocolate. What is the normal cause of this? I used a PVA mix (I know you like SBR) first so I thought that would have been ok. However I noticed this morning that my PVA is 2 years out of date. Could this have caused the blown plaster? Or is is possible that the previous paint on the walls was of poor quality as it looked like the plaster has puller that off too and the walls were back to the previous colour we had. Slightly disappointed but I've done it again and so far seems better. (Got some new PVA as well) Any tips / advice appreciated.

agree with board finish, more fat with multi, am from days of podgers bike cog on end of pole, mix with stick first, and ya need to learn ya stokes first, record 2+ 1 40 bags float and skim one day, old days drag n bath, 8x4 put up 1man , am now 60yrs old 7 spinal surgery's, old school no brush angle trowel .
Is the carpet on this job being replaced? Would you generally cover the flooring?
Really appreciate your vids. A few q's.
1. What's your opinion on using spatula/speedskim for flattening?
2. Can you recommend trowel sizes for a DIY'er?
3. Tips on angle/pressure whilst laying Vs flattening Vs polishing (perhaps an idea for a vid?)
Thanks man
Hey Zephyr let's see
1. Beginners can use a speedskim if they can afford the outlay, stay away for spatulas until your better as they can cause issues if you don't know when to use them.
2. Just go for a 14" marshalltown
3. You will feel the difference if you are scraping it and you will see how much your taking off. You can't really teach exactly how much pressure as you will just know. Just the same as you know how tight to squeeze someone's hand when you shake hands
Thanks big man. Looking forward to more vids.
Then seal with SBR
the mesh is more to stop cracks rather than to help it stick.
Hope this helps mate
@@Onthetrowel It does mate, thanks a lot I appreciate you!
Cheers 🍺
Thanks Barry, is the house a listed building mate?
I would highly recommend that you use this company because they know their stuff and will tell you the best products to use for whatever you want to do and you will have the peace of mind that it is breathable and won't get damp

Hi
What trowel you using and what size please
Thanks
When you over skim your ceilings and walls. Do you use neat SBR or do you water it down ? Iv always used grit but you don't half use alot more gear. Wanting to try your method. Cheers
Just use it neat mate
Hi previous video said the second coat consistancy should thinner that the first coat..? Wouldn't this weaken the plaster is this correct or is it the same mix ratio and consistency or is slightly sloppier better..?
Hi mate, good video. When and if using a speedskim, when would you recommend in this video to use it? Cheers
@@PaulCloves cheers for that
What size trowel is ideal for
Do you also do different things than just skimming. Like proper plastering uneven walls multiple cm off or worse
Hi do you pva the wall before hand..? Also have you done a video on surface prep..?
Can I use the same method with a lime based plaster, like the seciltek? My house is an old build and I have been discourage from using a gypsum based product, like the multifinish, over the original lime.
Do you not make the second coat slightly runnier than the first?
Thank you so much mate. Sure I've got a krend job coming up so a video will follow shortly pal
Hi m8 can u sbr old plasterboards ?
Yes mate but it's a bit extreme for the situation.
Pva 1 part to 3 parts water should do the trick on old boards
@@Onthetrowel thanks m8
excellent video kirk ! what scrim tape do you recommend ? for around the edges of your plasterboard
Any really mate. The pink and orange stuff is thicker so takes mire plaster to cover.
@@Onthetrowel thank you
Question Edges ??Outer edges whats the best way please ?
is a speed skim good for a beginner ?
(Got some new PVA as well)
Any tips / advice appreciated.
The plaster that came off, did it have the paint stuck to the plaster. Like when you picked a piece up off the floor was it still stuck to paint?
@@Onthetrowel Yes! It was contract matt we white washed the lounge in 2 years ago. The worst paint I've ever used. Chalky and doesn't like getting wet.
@@Onthetrowel I've been doing some research on 'chalky/powdery' paint and methods for preparing the walls for skimming. How would you tackle walls that have been painted with cheap chalk paint?
SBR stronger mix
sand down as best you can
score the walls
I have one wall that is becoming a nightmare with the new plaster blowing and I'm feeling like the wall hates me 🤣🤣
Was that mould on the wall kirk? Would of thought they would sort that issue out before fresh plaster or that will be full of mould aswell man... .
Can you do a closeup of how you take the plaster off the hawk?
How would you deal a section of popped plaster? Say size of an A4 sheet of paper on a wall before skimming it?
