FILM DESCRIPTION:
One morning in an ordinary town, five people are shot dead in a seemingly random attack. All evidence points to a single suspect: an ex-military sniper who is quickly brought into custody. The man's interrogation yields one statement: Get Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise). Reacher, an enigmatic ex-Army investigator, believes the authorities have the right man but agrees to help the sniper's defense attorney (Rosamund Pike). However, the more Reacher delves into the case, the less clear-cut it appears.

This seems to be a recurring theme in a multitude of movies. A stranger comes to town and the local bad guys, street thugs, gang members, bandits, punks, drunks at the bar, etc., see him and think, "hey, here's a complete stranger we know nothing about, let's not stop for a moment to consider that he might be some highly trained and skilled fighter, and let's go mess with him because we're just so sure of ourselves and overconfident." Then they end up getting beaten up, killed, etc.
You would think after a while that the movie bad guys would learn their lesson.

tbh that was a good acting and stunt work, getting kick in that way doesnt feel and hasnt had much surface to land.
After seeing this so many times, I have to say it's almost a perfect scene. Just the right amount of dialogue, great choreography, I love his reaction as the police pull up. Really great scene to watch over and over.
I always watch this movie when its on tv, really just in hopes to see this scene. I always come in after its already happened. Fortunately, the whole movie is pretty good.

You close in from different directions together. No one's getting in anyone's way, especially out in the open like that and not a closed space..

I don't remember exactly because I haven't seen the movie in a long time. But I think the point was for Tom to kick the crap out of them so that he would arrested. They weren't hired to win, they were hired to lose. That's why the police got there so fast, it was a setup for him to get arrested

You know that whom ever choreographed this fight has been in one because the hero had no problem kicking the first guy in the nuts, hard. When you’re outnumbered. Taking people out of the fight is priority 1. Groin hits, eye gouging, fish hooks, finger biting nothing is off the table. Clean fighting is for places with referees and weight classes. Real fighting is about survival. I think Col. Powell said it best : “ if you ever find yourself in a fair fight; your tactics suck”.

I wouldn't recommend biting, it's a risk that could screw you over.
They teach you this in military hand to hand training. Eyes, ears, elbows, knees, throat, groin, kidneys, and instep are the best places to strike. Never go for the chest with a hand strike because it's too well-protected. Don't kick above the waist. The easiest way to end a fight is with a strike to the groin or throat.
But the most important rule of hand to hand combat: don't. As soon as someone with a gun shows up, all your work is for nothing.

The original story is designed for a bigger person. If they cast someone that is 6'5" 250 pounds of solid muscle with great fighting skills, what 3 or even 5 people would ever try to pick a fight with him ? In that way it makes more sense to have a shorter Tom Cruise in the movie because they would always underestimate him. It would be hard and idiotic to underestimate a huge and fit man. Only drunks or druggies would fight such a guy.

As great as his physical actions are, the psychology he uses on these assailants impresses me even more.
Fantastic film, and spectacular fight choreography. I paid ZERO attention to all the flak Tom was given when being compared physically to Jack in the books. Tom has the acting chops to pull this off, and I'm thankful he makes the movies he does.
His stoicism is what sells me. He even talks like one.

Having worked in Hollywood, I saw way way way more hilarious role choices in terms of physicality, than Tom. By the way, fun fact: The Navy Seals is considered to be overall the most deadly and effective special forces group in the world, if put to a vote by all nations. Your average Navy Seal physically is far closer to Tom's height and build, and the big tall muscle bound guys actually tend to wash out of basic training at some point in hell week if not earlier. Also fun fact: I was a scrappy little kid in school, many of my friends were. We were also the kids you did not mess with, we did not start fights, but we won most of them, and the rare times we lost a fight, the other person needed medical attention anyway. Scrappy and small does not even remotely equal ineffective at fighting.

The sad thing about this scene is that Jack doesn't want to hurt anybody. You can genuinely see that in his face and mannerisms. He knows these are just kids who was put up to this by someone who knows who Reacher is and what his background is. This person(who we find out is Emerson) knew that Reacher would pummel these kids which is why the cops were called knowing it would be Reacher who's left standing. But as I said, Reacher didn't want to harm anyone which is why he felt sorry for Sandy and was really hurt by her murder. Say what you want about Tom Cruise but he is one hell of an actor.

I watched this movie again last night ...maybe the 5th time I've seen it...... and I don't watch many movies more than once. It's really quite good on many levels. This scene was very well done.

Tom Cruise really makes this scene work, if he was as big as Jack Reacher is supposed to be, he'd be an imposing dude, but no one fears the little guy.
When I first saw the casting announcement for the film, I thought “that little shrimp!?”. He actually did a great job. I also liked that they didn’t use fake camera shots to make him look taller. Just plain old “let her rip tater chip!” Very nice 👍.

The book’s description of Reacher makes him about 6’5”.
I heard the author of the books was not thrilled Cruise would play the title character. Meanwhile, Cruise's bank account is taller than he is. He'd be wealthier if he'd stop marrying fickle females. Cruise has no one to apologize to. He owns his own P-51 Mustang, flies choppers, and does HALO among other things.

What I love about Jack Reacher? It doesn't have a lot of those unnecessary background music.
I LOVED the first Jack Reacher movie. suspenseful, gritty, great dialogue, well directed (Christopher McQuarrie), all the characters seemed relevant. It was a suspense thriller.
And then BOOM, the sequel had another director and it was an ACTION Thriller instead with cliche characters, out of place dialogue, rushed plot... I was thouroughy dissapointed especially after a great experience with the first Jack Reacher film.
But maybe it's just me.

@AS YT ANd the studios are so risk averse that they always target existing franchises (graphic novels, novels, older movies, video games, even toys and games) but don't even bother to respect or understand source material as long as there is a built in audience that can be tricked to see the movie and they make a buck whether it's good or not. Same strategy with most sequels, no effort to even build upon first movie and understand what the audience loved about the earlier installments.

Some viewers may be younger or haven't viewed enough to be able to tell quality from garbage and from studio perspective I guess certain people involved in deciding what gets made would rather status quo remains same so that they remain relevant as the filmmakers that create a certain mark and following usually set up their own production company (Spielberg, Nolan, Ridley Scott, Scorcese etc) making the big wigs of studios irrelevant. it seems they block creative filmakers and opt for projects they have control over despite the projects not being creative or satisfying enough. ANyway that's a theory I have based on many of the projects that get greenlit for production.

I find it comical that in the books, Jack Reacher is a huge 6'5" guy but they cast Tom Cruise. lol. Still, he pulls it off.
He bought the rights to produce the movie, of course he's going to star in it, like he does in his other productions. Also the author said he really liked Tom as Jack and he even did a cameo in both movies.😋
I kind of like Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher, his size shows that he's skillful. The character in the book was already a giant, so it's only natural that he could take down half a dozen men.

@@Excalibur01 Yes... plus Lee Child does such a good job of describing his face worn with scars, hands the size of frozen turkeys. Cruise does a great job in the films but for me reading now I don't see him

@tinwoods Only similar if Jack or Heath decided to go with different make up or outfits. Lee Child describes Reacher as 6,3 tall 260lbs of muscles with scars that tell a story. Tom Cruise is 4,1 tall 137lbs and prettier than a New York City sunset

I've done that exact scene hundreds of times in my special little daydream world but in real life I've never won a fight, ever. After the first four or five losses I quit trying and started running which proved quite effective.
