There was a major uprising in Kazakhstan in 1986, known as the December events, as the USSR removed Kunaev from his post and put a foreigner in control of Kazakhstan. We don't really know, we don't study other Soviet leaders (except for Nazarbayev, who was the last). And so there is AlashOrda, who are also beloved and who fought for democracy, for increasing the literacy of the Kazakh population. (I cannot call them Soviet, although they lived during the Soviet Union).
