My laundry hack: Have a small or different-shaped basket for the “can’t go in the dryer” category! Put anything that needs to air dry directly into that basket, and wash the basketful as a separate load, no matter how small a load. It has saved me so much grief over accidentally putting something in the dryer because I forgot it was in the load, or because someone else put the load in the dryer and didn’t know there was a delicate item in the load.

Yes! I have a cloth bin that sits either over the (admittedly narrow) top of my hamper, or next to it. This bin also holds my delicates bags. Which in my home is for wool shirts and socks as well as bras. All delicates are air dry. When I’m planning well, everything is air dry. So the cotton shirts that can’t take any shrinking go in the bin, wool in the bags. Regular laundry in the hamper. Simple.
On the drying side, I finally learned to hang the damp clothes on hangers, and place them on the rack. (I don’t have a yard for a line) things that will still wrinkle do get hung on a rack bar. And I got a square sock and undies hanger from ikea, but dollar stores often have them.

You also could put all the delicate stuff in a laundry bag. It protects the delicate fabrics, you won't forget anything and you save a load of laundry :)

First, let me say that my heart feels for you and all moms of small children. You are amazing and doing a great job! I do want to say that there is a MUCH easier way to sort dirty clothes. Set up 3 plastic trash cans (or big bins) in your laundry room. That will be the only place there is dirty laundry. When you are finished with a shower, head to laundry room with dirty clothes in hand. When you give your kids a bath, have the kids take clothes to laundry room (kids as young as 2 can do this system - I have 4 kids). In laundry room, have them put whites in one bin, darks in another, and any special clothes (leggings, bras, etc) in the other bin. When it's time to do laundry, there are no extra steps of running around the house gathering dirty clothes. There is not a step of sorting clothes either. All there is to do is dump the clothes from the bin that is most full into the washing machine. It couldn't be simpler!

Doing one load, from start to finish every day, was a game changer for me. I also add white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment of the washer when I do towels and cloths to keep them fresh. Any men’s dress shirts that would require ironing only get a short time in the dryer and then get hung up to air dry - this keeps the ironing minimal to none. Thank you for all your ideas and for your amazing channel. You have truly helped me gain back some control in my house and life!

I"m so thankful to be at a point in my child-raising years where everybody pretty much does their own laundry. I do mine and the household stuff (sheets, towels, cleaning cloths, etc.) and everybody else is responsible for their own. I don't bother fighting with my teenager about it. When he runs out of clothes, he'll do a load.

Eventually, as the kids got older, we implemented a "if it needs to be done, do it..." rule. Like, if you're moving a load to the dryer, and there's a basket of towels ready for the wash, it's part of the job to start the load of towels as well as finishing with your own clothes in the dryer.

My best laundry hack is to actually look at the little measuring marks in the cap of liquid laundry detergent . You can fill to line A for regular loads or line B for large loads and it’s actually way less detergent than I have been using my whole life. Now that I use less detergent my clothes actually seem softer and cleaner.

My laundry hack is to hang washing on a line outside (weather permitting). I hear all you busy moms, No! But wait, it gives you time outside, slows you down, the clothes smell so nice and it saves on electricity. I find it so soothing, if in a hurry, put the smaller things in a dryer, or use one of those round portable, multi peg things, this can be done inside, by the children and hung outside.
A little story... my youngest was 7 and saw that I was busy and asked to help, I asked her to hang the washing on the line. She did it. When I looked the clothes were hung higgldy piggidly. My inner self wanted to scream and redo her work, but my outer mother, thanked her and left them be. The next time she asked to do it, I said yes and let us do it together. Then gently I said, this is how I hang, towels, etc. We enjoyed the experience. Now she is 22, not once in all that time did she moan or complain when asked to hang out the washing! 😁

This is what I've been saying all along ! When you use a dryer, you only have a short time before you have to get it out of the dryer & get it folded , otherwise, it'll be a wrinkled mess. But ! If you hang your laundry on a clothesline, it doesn't wrinkle ! Even if you don't take it down as soon as it's dry, it won't get wrinkled ! You've got more time ! It saves on either gas or electricity (depending on which kind you get), your laundry lasts longer (dryers are tough on fabric...all that dryer lint is NOT surface lint...it's the fabric being torn apart). The sunshine deodorizes, sanitizes, gets rid of some stains. And I'll tell you, it is so nice to be outside on a pretty day, hanging freshly washed laundry....maybe you've got flowers blooming nearby, maybe there's a bird singing. It's a lovely experience!
You "Intentionally creating My life", your story reminds me of one my grandma told me. She birthed & raised 9 children. Grandpa would hang the laundry for her sometimes & she said she'd look out there & see it hung kind of crazy, whopperjawed....but she never ever complained ! She was grateful for the help!

I did my laundry loads by person. Then I don't have to sort it when it's done. Once my kids were old enough they did their own laundry. Each person got their own unique style or color of sock so it was always easy to tell them apart if they got mixed into someone else's load by accident.

I am with you that I take the sheets off the bed, wash them and remake the bed. The bedspread is in the wash now and I cover it with a flat sheet since my two dogs sleep with me. I can change that mid-week if they shed a lot or track dirt. I am single and limit my loads but this week I vacuumed and washed all the throw rugs and dog blankets since they went to the groomer today and hopefully shedding will be minimized for a little while. I prioritize the laundry based on dog hair so when I get to dark close there is less chance of still having residual hair in the washer. I'm lucky that as a single person I usually get away with 3 loads on average per week am I'm very curious to read about Tru Earth!
The last two days I helped my sister declutter her walk in closet and dresser since she's close to retirement, down-sizing and moving away. We've filled two giant bags of clothes to donate and another 1 1/2 to trash! I'm so proud of her and I know it's in part because she's watched my journey over almost two years. She's a lot braver than when we've worked on her closet in the past.

My husband and I each have a basket as well in our room. Four loads a week of clothes. Then I fit in whatever else is needed on the fifth day, whether it is towels, sheets or dish cloths. No sorting whose is whose! I love your no -fold/half full drawer method. That is a good one :)

My laundry hack is to have one hamper in the bathroom (we only have one bathroom) all dirty clothes go in there. Then when a load is done since we don't have baskets, we literally fold as we pull from the dryer. For us a laundry basket just becomes storage for clean laundry or for dirty. Getting it in and out of the wash with no baskets helps keep our laundry picked up AND put away!!!
When my kids were babies my biggest hack was to use a diaper pin on the socks, everytime I took their socks off I put them onto a diaper pin so they were together. Wash them on the diaper pin and then could fold them or just toss the whole thing into their sock drawer and not be searching for a pair!
Thanks for doing this giveaway! This is a product I've seen in ads and have been interested in trying!

A tip from my aunt that has 12 children! Keep all kids clothing in the laundry room! She has shelves to store it, and a rod for hanging clothes. Kids go there to get clothes for bath time, and change there or in a nearby bathroom at bedtime/morning. Works a treat! My mom implemented this system with her 4 young ones. No carrying around laundry to bedrooms, gathering dirty laundry all over the house, etc! Super easy to fold and put away. Hamper only in the laundry room, with a laundry chute from upstairs. Parents have clothes in their room. Kids might eventually do that as they get older and can take care of it themselves.

I did this too. I used a hanging cloth shoe organizer for each child in the laundry room. I kept one complete outfit (shirt, pants, undies, and socks) in each bin. In addition to helping young ones get ready easier, this also helped keep a boundary to the number of clothing items we needed. If I didn't have an outfit to fill one of the spaces, I knew exactly what clothing items I needed to replace.

Now I’d really like to decrease plastic use but that’s over 3 times the cost, it can’t be nearly as expensive to produce and make a decent profit as Tru Earth is charging. No clothes that need dry cleaning. My boys have their clothes in a cupboard beside the bathroom, means they get changed by the laundry basket and sharing a wardrobe means putting away their clothes is easier (putting away clothes is my Achilles heel). Bed linens, towels and cleaning clothes are all white/light so they can be washed at high temperatures together for ease and hygiene. And finally..... minimise your wardrobe. Less stuff means less washing, and you have to keep on top otherwise you go naked!

I really liked that they just let me do it however it worked for me, the only rules were that it should be done consistently so that nobody had to complain that they don't have anything left to wear and that my mother does not have to intervene at any point of the process. Quite strict actually, now that I put it into words, but I started to love doing it for some reason and have ever since. Maybe it was because my mom did not have to do so much anymore on her own and it was nice to see her more relaxed.

I've shared this before, but I think it needs sharing again.
At 4 years old I taught my kids how to separate their clothes. Jeans, lights, darks, whites. I bought laundry separators (unit with 4 hanging bags). I have one in each bedroom. When they take their clothes off they separate them into the correctly marked bag. On Sunday, they take their laundry to the laundry room and dump each bag into the corresponding large laundry hamper in the laundry room.... similar to the tall white ones she has in this video. At this point I can tell my kids to put lights into the washer, take clothes out of the washer and put them in the dryer or take them from dryer and into a basket. I have a ton of things that can't get dried and I've taught my kids what doesn't get dried and they put into a small basket that I then hang up. You can always do all of this yourself, but having your kids separate from the very beginning teaches them organization and responsibility. My kids don't take their clothes off anywhere except their room where they then hang it up or put it away. I don't fold my kids' shirts. I lay them flat and my kids hang them up on their own. Teach your kids how to do things and you won't be as overwhelmed by the things you need to do.

My 2nd best hack: having only 3 laundry hampers in our house - 1 for whites, 1 for darks & colors, 1 for delicates. Towels, sheets, and cleaning clothes go straight from where they go to work into the washer when they are ready to be washed. Just ordered the unscented Tru Earth Laundry Strips and cannot wait to try them!

Hello! My laundry hack is to basically wear the same pants more than once so instead of having 7 pairs a week to wash I only have like 3. You could do this with kids too. Same with pajamas. But not underwear! Those must not be worn more than once! Change your underwear everyday! ;D

🧺 These are such great ideas! I'm steadily getting on track, but I do have one hack that works for me. I sort into loads as I go (lights, darks, towels, whatever) using multiple baskets. Then, when I do my one load of laundry I just choose the fullest basket. The point is: however you are going to sort into wash loads, sort as you take off the clothes or pick up around the house. I also highly recommend mesh laundry bags to sort like items. If you use one for socks, one for underwear, one for bras/athletic stuff, even one for washcloths...it makes it so much easier to fold--or not--and put away because it's already sorted. So, to make a load grab your mesh bags of socks, underwear, washcloths, and then throw in a couple of towels. It also cuts down on tangled laundry which can damage your clothes. I'm a grad student, so I do get behind occasionally. Having a system makes it much easier to get caught up again--which I am in the middle of now that Finals are done. Just some thoughts, but always do what works best for you. 🙏😀

I have to say that from experience if there isn’t a back up set of sheets you are going to have a terrible night of those sheets get wet. Ask me how I know. I've had this happen a lot. I have the same layers of sheets on each of my younger kids beds (and mine if kids sleep there). On bottom a fitted aheet I don't care about (we don't see it hardly ever), then a waterproof sheet and the top sheet is a cute fitted sheet. If an accident happens, the top fitted sheet and waterproof one go in the wash and there is already a sheet on the bed. Also, there have been so many times when we had to wash a sheet and there wasn't another sheet to go on the bed. Blankets or towels make do just fine. I mean... You get over it and get on with it. Especially in the middle of the night, and a wet sheet doesn't happen very often anyway.

I'm in the minority. I love doing laundry. No need to sort. We have a second floor laundryroom w/2 laundry baskets in it. One's for darks/brights; one's for lights. When a basket is full, I toss it in the washer. I hang all of our laundry outdoors during mild weather months. I enjoy that! Being out in the fresh air, birds singing, flowers blooming near me. This helps make doing laundry more pleasant ! Line drying makes things last longer. Dryers pull fabric apart...that's what all that lint is in the lint catcher. The sun deodorizes. I've washed socks & had them still have an odor if dried in a dryer...but if I dry them outdoors, the odor disappears.

I'm at the other end of raising kids (as a single parent, so little time), as mine are now adults. The best thing I had was a four-bag laundry sorter in a credenza kind of thing (actually two two-bag sorters) with each bag for a different type of laundry: white wash, hot wash (towels, underwear), light clothes, and dark clothes. From about 4 on, my kids put their clothes into the bins and when one was full, that was the next to be done (yes, I had to do some resorting). (We kept a small basket on top for the few things that required delicate washing.). I also have 5 laundry baskets. When I folded the clothes I put them into a laundry basket for each person (or for the linen closet) and delivered them (or asked my kids to carry them up). I did fold the kids' clothes, but what they did after that was their problem; mine and the linens got put away folded. Baskets were returned to the top of the credenza for the process to start over (more than once I've put a load into one basket, but carried 3-4 down). While the credenza could be a surface to collect clutter, it mostly hasn't and has been a useful way station for things to go downstairs or put out for another reason. The cats like to sit on it to get ear scratches.
We also have used the laundry baskets for packing for trips. When the kids were little, they assembled what they thought they wanted to take and I could do a quick check that they didn't have ten shirts and no bottoms. One basket is about one carryon suitcase. We carried the baskets down to the suitcases and left them there, reversing the process upon return home

      @@TheSecretSlob Another suggestion:
Different colors per person for towels, sheets. Kinda like the sock theory.. if its pink,, I know who it belongs to and where it goes..
I do this for guests, too. Only my guest towels have color stripes. Each color represents a room..
That keeps guest sets separated so they dont get worn out. Same with sheet sets.. oh, I never make guest beds with their assigned sheets until I'm sure guests are coming. I keep guest sheets stored in the guest room, folded with dryer sheets to keep them smelling fresh..
All sheet sets and towels have assigned homes in their respective rooms. If all beds are equal in size, i guess you could just do white, like hotels.
I have 15 beds but the color assignment seems to work best for me...and not so boring.
Everyone knows who's towels, sheets go where.
I do drop boxes for socks, underwear. Easy Sort but No folding. Easy access.
We all have ADD so we use labeled drop/toss boxes INSIDE respective closets for most effective maintenance. This is a fun game for kids, too. Give them their basket of clean clothes and set timer. They just open their closet, pick out a piece of clothing from their basket, toss it into the basket that has been labeled for that piece of clothing!
K.I.S.S. toss boxes: Socks, underwear, tshirts, pants, etc. No drawers. Forget folding. Effective for ADD, keeps clothes sorted, organized, visual and accessible. Yet,, maintained behind closet doors to keep rooms free from visual clutter.. Kindve like a
corn hole laundry technique. Of course, prefer to hang some clothes, but mostly our everyday clothes can be managed by the "corn hole" system.
I do like the idea of seasonal storing of Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter to maximize use of closet space. It also keeps kids from putting on shorts in wintertime or a sweater in the summer. I had lots of kids, so I also found it helpful to have kids set out their clothes for the next day the night before, especially if you have to go out the next day. Saves so much time and energy in the am...when there's not enough coffee and less time to think ;)

I have a tower with 3 baskets in our bedroom (we don’t have a laundry room unfortunately). One for cold washing, one for 60 degrees Celsius washing (towels and underwear) and one for whites. We sort them immediately and if something can be worn again, we lay it out for the next day. So no clean laundry in the baskets.
We don’t have room for a dryer so we have to hang dry everything. We have 2 racks standing, one for clothes and one for the hot washing. We have to stay on top of laundry because it takes 2 days to dry. We have to empty the rack and fold/put away everything before we can hang the next load so no clean laundry is ever wandering about.
We only have one laundry basket that we can take with us (in the sorting tower are stuck), so we have to put everything away before we can get the next load from the washer. The washer is downstairs in the kitchen and the drying racks are upstairs in a spare bedroom.
It’s a perfect system for us... until we forget to do laundry a couple of days and are running out of underwear or something, because it will take 2 days to get it dry in the worst case scenario 😂🙈

Soooo much faster to throw a T-shirt over a hanger than to fold it and try to make it fit into a drawer...plus, it's so easy to look through hanging items to decide what to wear. I try to do laundry in a way that's kinder to the environment too. My tip is the same as yours - check through your laundry to make sure you are not washing clean or almost clean clothes. My teenagers are so disorganised at times they put their clean clothes straight back into the wash because they 'store' their clean laundry on the floor! I use a ceiling rack to dry our clothes which means a minimum of 24 hours between loads as I have to wait for it to air dry, this stops laundry becoming something I end up spending a whole day on.

My best tip is to have a laundry basket for each kind of laundry.
We sort by colour and which temperature it should be washed in. We have 4 bins in the bathroom in the basement and 1 laundry bin on the first floor. When the bin on the first floor is full I take it to the basement and sort the clothes in the 4 bins.
When the kids shower in the evening before bedtime, they put their dirty laundry in the designated bin in the basement.
Then when one of the bins in the basement is full, I know to wash the clothes in that been.
Only down side, is that those special items share a bin with the towels and so on, so I really should have 5 bins, but there isn't more room ;-)

My kids are 5 and 6, and in those evenings when they don't shower, they used to just put their clothes on the couch or coffee table. We recently bought a bin for each, which can be under the coffee table on a shelf, and now they put their clothes (if clean enough to wear again) in the bin at night, and their PJs in there in the morning. Socks and underwear goes in the laundry bin on the first floor. So much nicer for everyone, and they are really good at remembering this new ritual.

I have a sorting system. Even my kids 3 and 6 start using it. And I am so glad I have it. It is an ikea shelf with 4 boxes. The boxes can be pushed in and taken out really easely. One box is for hot wash, towels ect. 2 boxes are for warm wash, dark cloths an light cloths, one box is for things that should never ever go into the dryer. So the adults put theire dirty used stuff right away in the box it belongs. The kids put theirs sometimes in, too. They understand where to put dark an light stuff. I have one more laundry basket in the bathroom. Since I started fly lady I take the basket from the bathroom an sort things in the right box of my sorting system every evening. Then I take the fullest box to my washing mashine.
That's my load for the next morning. The boxes fit nearly exactly a load. And there is space if I find some more in one of the kids rooms. The shelf is standing in my bed room (no space some where else. But as it is the room we get dressed it is easy to sort dirty cloths away easy while getting changed)the shelf ist 1,8 m high. It really does not take a lot of room. But is is helping so much sorting the laundry. Before fly lady it piled up. The best sorting system is not helping if the washing is not done regularly. 😂 Thanks for the channel and reminding me doing a load every weekday.

I have learned when cleaning my lint trap to dust the top of the dryer with the lint. I have a ton of dog hair and wiping the dryer every time keeps the dog hair away.

My sweet baby girl (14 months) likes to help sort the clean clothes and tries to fold them. It’s so cute ☺️

My hack is the FLYLady idea of "A load a day keeps the chaos away". Not really one a day for me, but more a laundry habit than a laundry day.
And I keep constant stock of sorting out laundry I don't wear and buy multiples of basics I love like shirts. I also changed to one colour of socks, sock mahjongg is a waste of time.
Have you seen Brittany Vasseur's recent shirt hanging hacks? There's a genius one that saves so much time.

Socks - I’ve done that for my boys, same type and color of socks in one size - works great. (Imagine the feeling when I bought a lot of same socks, just to realize it was “stamped” L and R on them 🙈🙈)

A good tip for when your kids get adult size are to colour code people's socks. My husband got stripes, my grown son got spots!

This is giving me motivation to go through Mount Laundrymonjaro down in the basement.. We have a laundry chute which I love but I really let it get out of control. I think the pile underneath of it is about 5 ft high and 4 ft wide and I usually only wash the top half of it maybe I don't even know whats at the bottom of that pile anymore lol but I imagine I can get rid of it..

I have two hampers and a diaper pail for dirty laundry. They are approximately the size of my washer tub, so I dump the whole thing in without sorting. We quit storing dirty laundry in sorters or the basement. A basket or pail is ready to go everyday.

    Quick Tip:
MicroFiber Clothes, never use Fabric Softener on them. Fabric softener creates streaks because the fabric softener is embedded in the fibers.
I don’t use fabric softener, just laundry detergent.

It’s just me, I do laundry once a week and only separate by heavy ( towels, pants, etc) and everything else

Keep stain sticks in the bottom of laundry baskets so they can be treated when they go in the basket and will be ready when they eventually go into the washer.

Hubby and I have a ver small laundry area, so I only gave room in there for the actual loads that I'm doing right then. Instead of a basket in our bathroom, we have a 2-bag laundry sorter, with detachable hanging bags. I have daily loads of towels and rags (the ones I use instead of paper towels. They get done as needed, almost every day. But I assign one or 2 categories of laundry for each day over a 4 day period. When my husband and I get changed, whatever we take off that can't be worn again before it gets washed, goes directly into the proper sorting bag (1 for bleachables, the other for non-bleachables. So, when bathroom and vlothing day comes around. I either just take one of the bags into the laundry area I n the morning and start the first load. Or, if they're big loads and I don't want to cary the bags, I just wheel the whole sorter in there. It helps that my house is on one floor, so that I CAN wheel the sorter around if the bags are really full and heavy.

I do the laundry but the kids put everything away. Including mine and my husbands stuff. I asked them a while back if they’d rather do one load a day or all the laundry in one day and they prefer a load a day. I like that better too.
