Separatists in Indonesia’s Papua region have released new footage of kidnapped New Zealand pilot Philip Mehrtens. In it, the hostage reads the rebels’ demands that the United Nations should mediate between them and Jakarta, to achieve Papuan independence.

people missed the context. the world's largest gold mine and third largest copper mine is in Papua owned by US company Freeport-Mcmoran. In the last two decades Indonesian government is trying to hold them responsible of mass exploitation of native workers and natural resources there then this rebellion happened. gun ownership is illegal in indonesia. one should ask where did they get those weapons? who paid for it? guess we know who is behind this especially when just recently indonesian government took chinese investment for building their new capital.

These people really only care about Papua's independence, but not it's development. For years ID government has been facing difficulties building infrastructures in Papua, like road, hospitals, schools, network towers, etc because these so called freedom fighters are taking the Indonesian workers' freedom to live, and celebrate on their graves
The governors of Papua are all Papuans, which means Papuans always have the right to enter Indonesian politics at all times, so really, all they want is the right to govern Papua for themselves against the wishes of Papuans residing in the area

What's really bizzare is that out of all the people, these rebels kidnap a Kiwi pilot that has absolutely nothing to do with the situation. Papua was forcefully voted to be one with Indonesia during Indonesia’s authotarianism and it has very little connection witn the rest of Indonesia, so a part of people obviously wants independent. Also Australia is absolutely againts OPM, they wouldn’t want a independent Papua while they already have mines in Papua and nevertheless a Indonesian ally. Detaining 2 papua men fleeing to United nation into Manus island should back up your disbelief.
