  • With The Army (1997): A report following the dramatic events of the Sandline affair, which resulted in the resignation of Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Sir Julius Chan.
    Subscribe to Journeyman here: th-cam.com/users/subscription_c...
Synopsis: This report offers a dramatic overview of the events which triggered Papua New Guinea's 1997 constitutional crisis. Jerry Singirok, the commander of Papua New Guinea's Defence Force, was sacked for calling the government out for corruption and for spending over $40m on mercerises for the war in Bougainville. Troops loyal to Singirok revolted and seized control of the main military barracks in the country, creating a huge rift between the government and the army. Meanwhile, protests erupted in the country's capital Port Mosebey, with civilians demanding Prime Minister Julius Chan's resignation. After MPs voted to keep Chan as Prime Minister, the army joined the protesters in storming the parliament building. Eventually Chan back down and resigned. Filming the chaos first hand, and following a pilot in the military, ABC Australia captures the turmoil that changed the fate of Papua New Guinea, and asks whether Singirok and the army's actions defended or damaged democracy in the country.

It's incredible to see the power of the people and the army standing up against corruption and demanding change. Jerry Singirok's bravery in calling out the government for corruption and excessive spending is commendable. The events that unfolded during the Sandline affair were truly dramatic, with troops loyal to Singirok taking control of the military barracks and civilians demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Julius Chan.
This documentary provides a firsthand account of the chaos and turmoil that changed the fate of Papua New Guinea. It raises important questions about whether Singirok and the army's actions defended or damaged democracy in the country. It's crucial to continue to hold leaders accountable and demand transparency in government to ensure that the rights and voices of the people are respected.
Thank you for sharing this powerful and thought-provoking documentary.

National security is compromised and the Defence Force intervention in our case was warranted to pull in the reigns of our runaway government to save the country from compromising our sovereignty.
      Thank you.

Given Jerry Singirok was later found guilty of corruption and dismissed from the office, its now clear it was all done for his political reasons.

Something Bougainville owes to us as citizens who stood with them during that time in history. I was a student at University and petitioned the govt to remove Sandline and request Sir J to step down as PM. I believe the students had a bigger impact towards the unrest. That's the only option we had that time because our voice was suppressed that time looking at how much the govt spend and the corruption involved to bring those mercenaries to deal with the conflict. And also I think the Australian govt just stood and watch without helping that time, even Sir J asked them for help.

Having been around during the Sandrine Crisis of the mid 1990's, one still feels the pain of the political blunder of hiring foreign mercenaries at the1❤ expense of the people by a "government of the people by the people" to restore sovereignty to a nation that had just been born out of colonialism.
Democracy was shaken by it's roots and the aftershock sticks with a people whose government forgot about it's Melanesian Cultural Values of Conflict Resolution through dialogue.
If it hadn't been for the Defence Force who acted independently of it's government one wonders what would have become of PNG' sovereignty?
Current Government moto TAKE BACK PNG should be in the forefront of our policy decisions now.
The political leaders of that day" some of whom are still alive today, ought to bow in shame at the proposed mass genocide of their own people in trying to quel an uprising spawned by ignoring the plight of our own citizens inorder to accommodate the wish and will of foreign capitalists.
After so much blood spill and death, the collateral damage, split families, the loss of life and missed development opportunities for the survivors of the crisis, what have we learned?

    • @colonelfustercluck486
      @colonelfustercluck486 หลายเดือนก่อน

there is lot of mineral and gas/oil reserves over the country as a whole.
Now the Bougainville Copper mine paid their fee's or royalties, to the PNG Govt. They paid and there is no dispute...But the PNG Govt never handed the money over to Bougainville as per the agreement.
So the Bougainville people were getting screwed over by the PNG national Government. (Surprise, surprise).
Hence, a dispute or civil war in Bougainville. Many Bougainvilleans were killed or died of wounds or lack of medical supplies, as PNG Government had blockaded the Island of Bougainville. This included many civilians, mothers having babies etc.... so that side of it was disastrous.
The mine was destroyed and occupied by the Bougainville people.
Soldiers and the Mobile Police units (Paramilitary very well armed Police) returned to PNG mainland after not being paid their wages while in Bougainville on active Govt service.
I spoke to one group who hadn't been paid for 9 months while they were over there. They didn't want to be there anyway. They had to live off the land for that time.
So they were against the Govt as well as the Bougainville people.
So everyone was against the Govt.... and they were the pricks who tried to bring in the mercenaries. (Probably using mine royalties).
Singarok is a hero for putting the right way of thinking forward.

Take back their independence. A beautiful country beforehand and a dangerous rogue country since. Let's not forget the absolute millions of dollars in infrastructure that the Australians left behind. The majority all destroyed now. Millions of dollars in aid still pour into this country, only to line the pockets of the many, many corrupted.
