Hong Kong fencer Vivian Kong Man-wai clinched the city’s first gold medal in the women’s épée final at the Paris Olympics on July 27, 2024. The world No 1 trailed by 7-1 at one point, but she managed to stun France’s Auriane Mallo-Breton in front of French president Emmanuel Macron, who was watching in the stands. In Hong Kong, the stunning win earned praise from the city’s leader John Lee and residents excited over such an early victory in the Olympic Games.

I saw the match and i must say I'm very impressed by her determination! I couldn't help but root for her even though I'm living in France. Seeing her slowly accumulate points and only being one point away was quite the experience. I'm happy for her 🎉

Well done to Vivian Kong for winning the Olympic gold medal! Though I was not born in Hong Kong, my father was, and your years of hard work exemplify the true spirit of Hong Kong.
Kudos should also be given to her French opponent because she took her defeat so graciously showing the Olympic spirit.
As much as I love Kong for being a lovely athlete and most of all a lovely person, you gotta give credit to her opponent. To lose from such a large margin ahead is just painful, especially with the home crowd behind you. She took it beautifully with all smiles. So brave.

The pressure she must have been under. Yeah, Cheung got Gold in Tokyo and literally everyone lost their minds, but I imagine it stressed Kong out. To see a fellow fencer make history while being ousted in Quarters yourself, it just feels awful.
Kong herself admitted the pressure. I watched her interview after the match and I was genuinely moved. It's just her pain from losing in Tokyo all coming out at once; an outpouring of relief. And to win in the way she did; coming back from a 7-1 deficit, holding out the last round, and winning the sudden death... This is straight up movie-worthy
Kong once said she didn't deserve the "World Number One" title. Well, she now has the accolade to prove it. DESERVED.
