Volvo XC90 whining noise (Rear Differential)

- If you find you getting a whining/droning noise on deceleration between 65-20mph it will probably be a Rear Differential/final drive problem.
I was quoted £2000+vat from Volvo for this part on an exchange basis. Luckily you can get these rebuilt for under £500- eBay is your friend for that but that is you carrying out the work yourself.
Expect to pay an independent garage around £1100.00 for a rear diff removal- rebuild and reassembly.

My XC90 has just gone past 65000 miles and I am in the process of changing all the fluids over the next 12 months.

My 02 V70 XC is leaking some fluid from the rear differential and I started hearing the exact same noise the other day. Do you think the rear diff is toast or it's still savable?
It may be savable as it might have just got low on fluid. I would get it topped up and looked at asap.
Hi. Did by the time you had the whining noise, was the car able to go over 70 mph ? Or any loss of power ? Any changes in D mode ? Please let me know
Yes was able to go over 70, no loss in power. D mode made no difference afaik
did you try just changing the diff oil?
No I had it checked by an ex Volvo technician and advised that the rear diff needed rebuilding or replaced.
Your pompe is dying
Now, you have to change your entire rear différentiel, and put please some Amsoil.
I attempted a fluid change. Made zero difference. I believe it's the pinion bearing.
Did the rear diff cure the problem?? Also could you hear the noise from the front as well?
