    Ernesto Hoost used a lead “slapping style” hook to set up his leg kicks. One of my favorite ways to use the lead. Enough force to shift the weight of the opponent to the lead leg and anchoring it for a solid leg kick.

    This was done really well mike, you broke down not only the technique but the different footwork which is massive on whether or not your going to land in any given scenario. Stuff like that is important. You can have a killer roundhouse kick but if you can’t make it land it’s shit. Keep this format it works great man.

    Just a comment about that feet rotation thing you mentioned when talking about the body hook. The greatest improvement in my boxing came from training just jab-cross but really focussing in rotating my body with those pivots, and then started adding other punches to that rithm. I trained really nice and slow for some weeks that I couldn''t hit the gym. Well, when I went back to the gym, I felt that everything was surprisingly easier than before. I wasn't necessarily pivoting my feet as much as at home, but my body got used to the motion tho.

  • @X-Factor-22

    You are right on the money when you use the analogy to think about how you would slap someone when throwing a hook!
    The energy starts from your feet, turning your hips with your lead shoulder slightly rotating behind the hips! 👍
    Can’t see how anybody could argue with that!😃

    This is excellent technical instruction! I've had a bakers dozen of instructors at least, (training 30+ years now) and none of them have placed proper focus on these kind of fundamentals. Most of the time I think I picked up on it, by trial and error maybe... But didnt know why it worked. Pay attention though people, Icy Mike has the short cuts here, that will definitely make your fight game better! I was definitely doing that with my lead hook to the head but definitely not doing it with my shovel hook (favorite combo) I could hardly ever land

    About the beat discussion, I had an epiphany about this exact thing the other day. Using an open kitchen cupboard for slipping and weaving practice, I realized that in trying to be faster I was disrupting my own rhythm and ending up off balance and out of position. The correct way was to stick exactly to my natural rhythm then work on speeding up that rhythm. The same song playing faster, not random notes spurced in for no reason.

  • @DoomRater
    @DoomRater 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    One of the biggest things you can do here is connect your footwork to stances. TMA visitors might get it a bit easier than MMA fighters, but one thing that No Nonsense Self Defense described was the idea that every step you make changes your stance and the attacks you launch from a stance will determine how useful it is or even if you have to change your stance by moving or shuffling your feet in place in order to perform it. And when I saw your hips do that huge loadup from throwing the hook, I immediately thought "wow, that's going to be one strong kick coming out of that stance." Taekwondo might have a few more kicks from that stance than just a loaded up round kick too- Van Damme would just love to pick up his lead foot and shove it into someone's chin.

    I'm holding mits for a friend of mine sometimes, and I have been getting him to use this a little. He has that beginner tendency to wana swing that hook at the end. Even though hes not a beginner beginner. When I have him use that slip for access to the body shot, it is easier for him.

    You need that beat between jab and hook to give your opponent the time necessary for him to move his guard elbow out of the way of your hook in response to your jab/threatened (or actual) right to his center/right. So often, what works brilliantly on the bag doesn't automatically take into account an actual opponents' physical response capabilities; you have to consciously include those factors into your training. By example of this, the advancing jab/hook combo you demonstrate rightly ought to be practiced as a 4-punch combo; jab, right to the gloves/chin, hook, right to the side of the chin as you move past/behind your opponent, setting up for your follow-up exchange if required (a properly delivered hook to the kidney "should" end a fight - you need to allow time for a referee to react and intervene if you are training for a referee'd fight circumstance).

    There is no beat in a 1-3 to the head, but there is a beat in a 1-3 to the body because you need the shoulder feint in order to lower your head for the liver punch. A 1-3 should be almost as fast as a 1-1 to the head, I find it helps if you keep the fist orientation the same for both punches so that you don't have to turn your hand over; vertical jab into short hook, jab into medium hook or corkscrew jab into long hook. There's less for your body to do in between each punch, so you don't need as much co-ordination.

  • @comradesockpuppet6476

    Hey mike, what are your thoughts on shovel hooks to the face? The only place i can find them even mentioned is Jack Dempsey's book "Championship Fighting and Aggressive Defense", which portrays them as a very important technique that was lost during the thirties due to incompetent trainers. But when i see the drawings it just looks like a very short straight punch, not a hook. Can you think any difference there might be?

    • @andrewferris1903
      @andrewferris1903 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A few things 1) the shovel hook to the head is more or less the same thing as the lead uppercut to the head 2) Boxers did not have the same posture in the 1930s as they do now, back then American fighters tended to crouch in order to take their head offline from the jab and cross - which puts it directly in the path of the lead uppercut. 3) Trainers "forgot about it" because it isn't an important punch in modern boxing, it's mainly used as a counter to the rear uppercut when it is seen.

    • @Ossi100000
      @Ossi100000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before I read Chamionship fighting, I thought of it just as a "short" and a "long" version of an uppercut. I would say, it can be very useful, if you want to barrage your opponent with quick punches from different angles. Especially when you work a lot with you lead hand, since the full uppercut is a tad slower. When you fight a smaller, versatile opponent, who bobs and weaves a lot, it can become invaluable to punish excessive bobbing and weaving.

    • @comradesockpuppet6476
      @comradesockpuppet6476 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewferris1903 If I'm remembering this right Dempsey specifically states that a shovel hook is different from a lead uppercut cause 1) It's powered by twisting the hip and shoulder into the punch, while the uppercut is powered by slanting the hips to the side and surging upwards and 2) the hook comes in from the side, the arm staying at ninety degrees from the chest (like the cross as decribed in the book) while the uppercut ideally is thrown straight up through the centerline; the slanted hips helping bring the elbow in and throw the punch up while remaining squared up. Haven't watched much boxing but the lead uppercuts I've seen are lined up by twisting the body to be sideways. Thoughts?
      Edit: forgot to add the point I was getting at which was that a shovel hook to the face can be thrown with either the lead or rear hand without becoming an uppercut

    • @andrewferris1903
      @andrewferris1903 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@comradesockpuppet6476 The mechanics are different but the paths to the target are more or less the same, the left shovel hook is close to the lead uppercut and the rear shovel hook is close to the bolo puch - that's why they all look similar when illustrated.
      I know Ferguson uses a lot of off angle uppercuts if you want to look through his fights, but the point I was trying to make is that if you look at the statistical breakdown of the punches thrown in boxing then even the lead uppercut is practically non existent. I am as much a fan of Dempsey as the next guy, but he came from a day and age in boxing when "stand and deliver" was more common than "stick and move." The reason a lot of these more obscure punches like the vertical jab, shovel hook and bolo punch to the head "died off" is because they were defensively suspect, each one requires you to lower your shoulder and elbow below your fist to find an angle.
      In professional boxing you'll see 5 distinct punches on average per match, and that's not because their trainers forgot to pass down the 5 Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique. It's because trading is a no, no in contemporary boxing. In Thai Boxing, I only teach the overhand and uppercut so students know how to defend against them and counter with them after slipping a jab - even though they're the best risk vs reward punches in boxing, jab, cross, hook should be the volume of your output because they are the safest.
      That said they do have their place; the further behind you are on the score card, the more risks you're going to have to take. That's where you need to hunt for angles, but personally I prefer to do that with riskier defenses, inside slips and cross parries, than unorthodox puches.

    @Icy Mike, Great tutorial! Do we have to bring back the hand to the chin between punches in all three techniques or just for the last two?

    Hey I’ve been doing boxing workouts lately and I have a punching bag stand . I’m right handed but I naturally go to southpaw . I feel quicker on my feet with my right foot in the front . Is there boxers that are southpaw but are right handed? And u think u can put up a video showing beginner techniques for southpaw . Thank you sorry for the long paragraph .

    Is there a name for that style of bag? I just have a standard 100lb cylindrical heavy bag, but I like how this setup allows for other angles and uppercuts.
