We always taught a sort of switch kick into a side kick (instead of a round house) while moving backwards to help create some distance if you were panicking and getting overwhelmed. Doing a sidekick in this way allows you to push off your opponent while reducing their forward movement. Its used at intermediate levels, somewhat more advanced students are encouraged to circle and create opportunities for counters. Its not a great move but it helps less experienced students to fight that sense of panic that comes just before they pull a full retreat (which is never good).

See for sport karate and good boxers these things going backwards and counter fighting are what they love,it’s all a bait,so many ways to punish a aggressive fighter,(sidekicks are the best, but the big thing is way easier in side stance to counter fight as footwork so much better going in and out or just escaping easy, spinning back kicks or backfist, but boxing alone got uppercuts check hooks straight cross lean backs, but reality is big percentage of people can’t fight going backwards including high level fighters just not in them at all, great video though 👍,

You need good reach to punch while going backwards, that is why it doesn't work for Icy Mike (or me, also 5'5").

That’s not true at all doesn’t matter about your height, obviously it helps if tall with range, look at floyd mayweather best defensive boxer ever,he’s found a style he’s mastered in the philly shell used he’s speed reflexes shoulder and he’s pull counter check hook to out class every boxer he’s faced, very rarely has he ever attacked a boxer always defensive

I think he did something recently on this. We filmed this two months ago though (before front kick focus even had a name, hence the edit)

    How to fight backwards:
    1. Get up off the ground
    2. Get punched in the face
    3. Argue with angry dude
    4. Check out dude's girlfriend

I know he did something similar recently. I tried to hold onto this one for like two months because other people kept putting stuff out but I had to get through it. It happens.

Dont worry, I understood that medieval reference. It would be awesome if you looked into phalanx or pike formations. I know riot police do shield formations but would a bunch of dudes with mops do the same or would riot police benefit from having a long ass staff as well as the shield?
