Thanks for another informative video. I remember when I went through the military "encryption black box repair technician" course (circa 1982). On one of the assignments, we were given a nameless coverless guitar pedal. Every group was given a different pedal. We had to document how electronic signals can be manipulated and modified. We had to draw a schematic, and explain how our assigned guitar pedal worked and what it did. Very good lesson. I decided I liked playing with guitar pedals much more than encryption equipment.
I've had a Joyo vintage overdrive for years. It's as good as old Ibanez Tube Screamers, easily. It was thirty nine bucks. Nice to see Josh giving them support!
The Atmosphere is a box of wonders. With my 12-string guitar I've had endless fun without even exploring all it can do. Right now it's on my MEL9 to tweak those Mellotron sounds. It's a keeper. Update: these days the MEL9 goes through a Hall of Fame 2 and the Atmosphere serves the guitar. Still finding fascinating and useable sounds. Looks like an excellent brand.
"I Got Id" is one of my favorites, certainly a favorite song from Pearl Jam. I must point out, though, that the "Id" is as in the "Id, Ego and Superego" (I believe they're all Freudian references). It's a fantastic song. I'm really glad I found your channel. Not only do I love your insight as to the history of pedals, but how they're made and your reviews. I don't see you reviewing your 'competitors' pedals; I assume that you do very well as a manufacturer of pedals and that your love for them transcends the boundaries of competition. I pray you never stop adding content. I've not seen one single video that you've made that wasn't worth the watch. Rock on!
Josh's marketing strategy is genius; create videos about every other pedal manufacturer (except strymon) and lead curious audiences to the JHS channel.
I actually prefer “Long Road” from that single. Best collaboration for me has to Mad Season, a one off album with Mike from Pearl Jam, Layne from Alice In Chains, the drummer from Screaming Trees and John Baker Saunders, a really great bassist (the world lost both Layne and John too soon to overdoses). It’s probably the best album to come out of the whole “Grunge” era because they used a freakin’ vibraphone on some tracks! What?!
Josh, just wanted to say thanks for explaining different circuits in your videos, especially fuzz ones. Have been trying to decide between certain fuzzes (different big m*fs) but understanding how all the fusses came to be and work and why the sound that way really helps why I'm hearing what I'm hearing. Just love your style of explanation of what we're hearing vs why it works. Always fun yet informative, especially why a certain circuit might be different. Thank you!!
Hey Josh, would love too see you do a video on NUX pedals. I have the Atlantic delay and reverb, I got it simply because my echo puss doesn't have a tap tempo. One of the cheapest pedals on my board and it's super impressive, I play phsyc rock with my band but often play alot of blues and funk and wow it's versatile. It's realy something I think you would be impressed with, as a luthier I deal with the typical guitar "myths and bullshit" every day, if you put a blindfold on those people I reckon anyone could mistake it for a very high end pedal. Good video, cheers! The more affordability options for younger players the better I say.
Scored a Monomyth bass pedal last week. At first, I wasn't blown away, but after playin' around with the controls a bit, I AM blown away! I'd even go so far as to say it's the cat's pajamas.
JHS has dropped a video, choose your path: - I guess she price of X is about to sky rocket on reverb 🤣🤣🤣 - I love how Josh praises other companies, i dont yet know it but i have been subtly incentivised to buy into the brand etc.. - 5G can't melt school shooters
When a boutique pedal builder that currently builds some of the best pedals in the world says your budget pedals are good, you know you are doing it right
Just went out today and locally found/ bought a supreme fuzz, and the cheese ball ... I now have my first jhs pedals 😭😭😭💕 thank you so much for your dedicated work for the tones.
I have the Joyo American sound amp sim (it emulates a '57 Deluxe IIRC) and it is terrific. I think one of the big reasons Joyo works so well is they understand their demographic - the home player/recorder or the pro who wants to emulate their live set up at home and they design and package their tones accordingly.
“I Got Id” is one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs of all time. I’ve always pronounced it as “Id” (as in: Freud’s Id, Ego and Super-ego) and not I.D. (as in: identification). In any case. It absolutely rocks!!!
murillo237 Agreed! There is definitely that too. In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s how Eddie sings it in the track. :) But that would also mean my pronunciation choice is closer to the intended sound. Haha. It’s obviously not a big deal, just a fun debate. :)
I like that the atmosphere reverb has the “trails on/off” toggle. I love the choice. Only reverb pedal I have that gives me the trail on when I want it after I shut the reverb off ....is the Line 6 Verbzilla I scored used mint in the last 12 months. Trails on on the Verbzilla is awesome and it looks like I good feature on “atmosphere” I almost bit the bullet on a “Spring Tank” for my bday but I had scored a SPRING KING after watching your show a few months ago so.... I had to chill 😄. Love your show though and hearing about all these affordable pedals/newer brands/pros and cons/and yeah I love to hear them because brands like JOYO I don’t get to try locally. I know a lot of people get pissed because they say this show immediately sends the prices of there fav cheapo brand like JOYO through the roof. I’m not sure it does in the “long game”. I play the “long game” when it comes to pedals 😄 CHEERS and yes Neil Young and Pearl Jam!!!! Good moment in time my mother’s favorite growing up playing with one of my favorite grunge/alternative acts was very cool.
No just a pedal show, but also a great way of doing business in a creative way. " When you operate from the competitive mind, you focus almost exclusively on you. However, when you are operating from the perspective of the creative mind, you become focused on leaving the impression of increase in everything you do. - Bob Proctor". Very well done JHS! Keep it up!
I‘m again impressed on how wonderful and funny all your videos are that always can really give me the idea of the pedals shown and explained without having them tested myself. Thank you so much for what you are doing, Josh!!!
Hey Josh, I love your videos and love how you spread love even to brands that the snobs hate! I was curious if you would ever do an episode on Digitech, who get I think maligned despite having some incredibly innovative products (alongside some serious duds), also their whole history coming out of DOD/the whammy series.
I have most of the pedals in this video. The Atmosphere and the Preamp House (not featured here obviously) are absolutely stellar pedals and mainstays in my amp-less rig. I'm so stoked you made this video, I feel more validated now haha. Love your work mate! 🖤
Same. I have like 7 or 8 of these. The Preamp House got replaced by a Hotone AMP but I'd use it again in a heartbeat. The Vision, Uzi, ZIP, Atmosphere, and Taichi are my favorites
The Galaxy setting on the Aquarius sounds close one of Adrian Belew’s signature tones. Add some volume swells and it could be convincing as his sound from Naive Guitars.
Thank you for "busting" us with that Cab Sim. Seriously - I love how far this concept has come and you knew that if you told us up front people would have already been influenced negativity against it. Great sounds and I appreciate all the information you provide for us. Thank you always. Also favorite collaboration: when Pat Metheny Group collaborated with David Bowie for the "Falcon and the Snowman" soundtrack.
I spent January-February searching for the perfect budget pedals for my first board. I picked up the Aquarius and the Atmosphere. Now you proved me right!!
Ya, I recently bought most of the "R Series" from Joyo. I have the preamp house, the cab box, the tauren, the uzi, the dark flame, the tai chi, the zip amp, the legal done and tonight also bought the narcissis chorus...lol. Love every one of them. AND YOU helped turn me onto to the Joyo line up !!! THX !!!
I don't know how I missed this one before, but this was a great video. The 2 that stood out for me were the Aquarius and the Cab Box. I have a Joyo AC Tone, and I love it! I've used it just as a stand alone amp in a box, and it works great! Used it on my album that way, sometimes with a Digitech Mosaic into it. I was hesitant at first, but the more I find out about Joyo, the more impressed I am with them. As for odd musical combinations, I'm really digging the 2 albums that Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have done together. I like the direction Plant has been going anyway, but those two together are mind-boggling and inspiring.
Same here. It’s a decent enough ocd clone for guitar no doubt, but I wasn’t using it and just threw it on a little bass rig on a whim and just like that it had its purpose.
Hey there, Josh. I want to offer my sincere thanks for this and your whole series of videos that I am just discovering. I have been playing guitar for about 40 years, and I have always been much more of a guitar guy than an amp guy. Pedals were never something that compelled me until recently, so I've been wading into them cautiously. It seems natural to buy a used Fano guitar for $2K, but the idea of a $300 pedal freaks me out (this is probably not rational, but it is me). So just getting a guy like me into the market is a great idea. The idea of a closed market with an "I win you lose" approach is likely to fail, because the number of pedal users will be static or even shrink as old dudes age out. Take someone who has never owned a delay and get him/her to appreciate the nuances, and I imagine you will create a new customer - because who wouldn't love a pedal with a picture of an orange slice or Scooby Doo ghost. Mad props.
I've been curious about these, I'm glad we get a chance to see how you use them.. But Josh, I'm confused about calling them budget. Except for the XVI, these are in the price realm of similar BOSS pedals, and the multi function ones are marginally cheaper than their Electroharmonix equivalents.
Thank you Josh - I've loved your videos since I started learning to play guitar just over a year ago as a 53 year old. I'm a budget pedal buyer because I'm nowhere near good enough to justify spending a lot of money. I've just learned the value of having reverb, and have seen by most accounts there are really no "good" budget reverbs out there, so I pulled the trigger on the Atmosphere before your video makes it $130+. Now I just need to learn how to use a compressor so I can dust off my Joyo Dyna-Compressor and figure out the benefits of a boost so I can justify buying your Milkman pedal and I'll be all set!
ı bought seven of them 2 days ago after your thoughts and what happened, ı could not sleep 2 days because ı spent so much time with jamming them and the result is awesome thank you mate
I got ID sounds like they were listening to Slint. I definitely remember when Mirror Ball came out but I didn’t know about the other songs. Thanks for another great video.
Love it Josh! I have SEVERAL Joyo pedals, including the Preamp House running into the CAB BOX. The CAB BOX is simply an amazing tool! I have the Aquarius and Atmosphere, as well as the Tauren, which is a nice gainy Klon klone for me anyway, and the Taichi, which appears to be a Zen Drive type of pedal. Love that you aren't afraid to demonstrate other brands, you are truly amazing!
Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps was one of my Dad's favorite albums when I was a kid. Primed me for a lifelong love of fuzz as well as acoustic vaguely countryish folksy guitar stuff.
I was not sure what to make of your videos of other company’s pedals. Every vid I’ve seen, you seem to like, and say good things about other pedals. How classy (for a change). I own some jhs pedals, and I love them. I really like the clover. I own a Boss FA-1, and the clover sounds exactly the same to me. It’s really cool that it has the exact boss set-up, and two different versions accessible via a rotary switch. So, vintage, and 2 others, really cool. Yup Josh, you’ve got my vote for being fair and balanced. Out of all the advertisements for all these other pedal companies out there. The fact that you say, you like these JOYO pedals, and some behringer ones from the last vid, makes me want to go out and buy some.
my favorite weird collaboration is the album "A Ass Pocket of Whiskey" by R.L. Burnside and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, released on Matador in 1996. Blues purists might cringe, but it’s some amazing raw stuff.
Really pleased I came across this, been looking for a multi-modulation pedal that didn't break the bank so looked into the Joyo Vision and now just waiting for it to be delivered.
Once I concluded that I needed a delay with options I compiled a long list, winnowed it down to 5, and ultimately decided on the Joyo Aquarius. And I couldn't be happier. It is a mainstay on my primary 5-pedal tone plank. Almost went for their reverb, too, but landed on the Polaris instead. You didn't show the blinking edge light on the pedal. Thought it was great for about an hour, then I turned it off. Oh, and the looper is great.
Ok i didn't expect you to pull the "i've been playing this the whole time". I'm sold on this IR sim it's such a great product. I've learned that tweeking the IR can make any amp sound great.

This guy is just plain fun to listen too. He has an excellent camera presence and also puts out great info.
T-minus 5 minutes till reverb jacks the prices
Thanks Josh.
Same with Amazon!
hahahah
true story
Not vintage. They're on amazon. still in production
@Toxic Potato lmao calm down its a joke
Thanks for another informative video. I remember when I went through the military "encryption black box repair technician" course (circa 1982). On one of the assignments, we were given a nameless coverless guitar pedal. Every group was given a different pedal. We had to document how electronic signals can be manipulated and modified. We had to draw a schematic, and explain how our assigned guitar pedal worked and what it did. Very good lesson. I decided I liked playing with guitar pedals much more than encryption equipment.
I was gonna get the jhs pink panther delay but you sold me on the Aquarius. Lmao
😂
ammon pocketecho..the Aquarius is a rebranned ammon pockecho..save yourself about 30 bucks and get the pockecho
@@voidburner8271 Other way around. Ammoon is rebranded Joyo.
Grisha _owo it's different godammit
When his own videos backfire on him 😂
I've had a Joyo vintage overdrive for years.
I have a tc electronics flashback, do I need the joyo delay too?
@@MerchantsofSolace The delay is the Aquarius. I don't have any experience of that one.
Yeah realized that after
Love the budget videos like this one and the berhinger one. You should cover more budget brands such as Donner and the budget TC Electronic range.
Rock on!
Just watched this and was gonna post same comment.
What?!
Disturbingly unknown/underrated 90s album.
That atmosphere is probably one of the best reverbs I've heard. Definitely gonna cop one when I can.
Great video Josh. I love that you're so humble about other brands and their work. You forgot to mention that the Cab Box have midi too.
Been hoping you'd do an episode of these. Love my Joyo pedals.
Scored a Monomyth bass pedal last week. At first, I wasn't blown away, but after playin' around with the controls a bit, I AM blown away! I'd even go so far as to say it's the cat's pajamas.
JHS has dropped a video, choose your path:
- I guess she price of X is about to sky rocket on reverb 🤣🤣🤣
- I love how Josh praises other companies, i dont yet know it but i have been subtly incentivised to buy into the brand etc..
- 5G can't melt school shooters
I bought my first JHS pedal specifically because he is cool to other companies.
Cringe
Trunk McEight nope, you just didn’t get it...
Trunk McEight
You’re not alone. I don’t get it either.
Your Videos are NEVER dull, always interesting, informative and entertaining!
So favorite crazy collaboration is kurt cobain and william s burroughs. They released a track together The Priest They Called Him.
rrrRRrrrReally? ΑΓΙΑ ΤΡΙΑΣ ΕΛΕΗΣΟΝ ΗΜΑΣ!
Almost any collaboration with Burroughs was brilliant.
It actually is pronounced as "Id" and not "I.D."
Josh was wrong. And that's okay. LOL
Yeah I've always gone with Freud on that one. Good to know I'm correct
Wikipedia agrees with you too: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Got_Id
I always assumed it was 'I Got Sh*t' and Id was some kind of edit or joke, kind of like 'Waif Me' on some versions of In Utero.
murillo237 Agreed! There is definitely that too. In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s how Eddie sings it in the track. :) But that would also mean my pronunciation choice is closer to the intended sound. Haha. It’s obviously not a big deal, just a fun debate. :)
Picked up the Atmosphere after this. It’s awesome. Thanks for the rec.
Pink Floyd and Incubus : Wish You Were Here
Yeah - you’re right! They‘be already cross pollinated! 😜
Yo yo yo you’re on to something
I'm making a driagam of this
The descriptions alone make this worth watching.
Keep it up!
Joyo is a great manufacturer. I’ve been collecting them for a while, I’ll try to use it more though. That UZI pedal is brilliant! Gotta get one now
Thanks for your support on JOYO, you can find a girl Cindy Fang on Facebook, she has promotion codes from JOYO brand store.
I would also like to buy that Uzi, I heard somewhere it is a Friedman BE-od clone but with a normal price
Srdjan Teofilovic I though they sounded close hahaha nice to know it’s actually a clone.
JOYO Direct hey Joyo, I have your Trem, Chorus, Sweet Baby, & Vintage Overdrive. Big Fan. Do you have a harmonic Tremolo?
How do I contact Cindy Fang?
I‘m again impressed on how wonderful and funny all your videos are that always can really give me the idea of the pedals shown and explained without having them tested myself.
Thank you so much for what you are doing, Josh!!!
Hey Josh, I love your videos and love how you spread love even to brands that the snobs hate! I was curious if you would ever do an episode on Digitech, who get I think maligned despite having some incredibly innovative products (alongside some serious duds), also their whole history coming out of DOD/the whammy series.
fall out boy. you had me rolling on your analogies. I am officially a joyo collector ,starting today, because of you. Keep up the great work!
When he started playing through them, I was like, "yep". Especially the atmosphere 👌🏾
Also Tom Waits on Primus' "Tommy the Cat" is a must listen
Tom waits anything is a must listen and if it’s primus coattails of a deadman where Tom helps roast Courtney love is probably my first pick.
i really respect this selfless content of JHS's. TH-cam is becoming beautifull place because of this kind of channel.
Franz Ferdinand and Sparks released an album as FFS. Very much worth a listen.
Nice one. Too many people listen with their eyes, not their ears. Big respect to you for always showing what your competitors have to offer.
Hotone Binary amp? Over preamp house?
@@adamstein9333 Very similar pedals, and I tried them both. Preamp House won for me, but it was close.
Your explanation of I Got Id and Neil Young’s solo was exactly my experience! Was awesome to hear that someone else shared this. Great selection.
„XVI“ probably stands for „16“ ...as in 2x8 (=octaves)
mind=blown
Man you stole my chance to be a smartass
I have the Atmosphere on my board right now. Great post-punk, Interpol-esque tones. Much love for it.
The Galaxy setting on the Aquarius sounds close one of Adrian Belew’s signature tones. Add some volume swells and it could be convincing as his sound from Naive Guitars.
Maaaaaan. I just love your show so much. It's so transparent and fun. Great to have you here. You really helped us.
That Cab Box is just too much! Amazing!
This guy, Josh Scott droppin the Chris Farley reference like a martini glass at a Christmas party.
he kinda looks like Chris if you squint your eyes a little.
The fallout 4 comment was too funny lol
haven't we all
If only he had said new Vegas.... Oh well XD
same here. . war never changes. and what's with all the tv's in the tree? And I'm am saddened to say I believe I am a Gen 4.
I spent January-February searching for the perfect budget pedals for my first board. I picked up the Aquarius and the Atmosphere. Now you proved me right!!
Josh knows that a rising tide raises all ships. If he can get people addicted to pedals they will be interested in the hobby forever.
THX !!!
I've bought a atmosphere.
And I'm love.
I use a Joyo Ultimate Drive with my bass. Great overdriven bass tones for less than 40 bucks.
Same here. It’s a decent enough ocd clone for guitar no doubt, but I wasn’t using it and just threw it on a little bass rig on a whim and just like that it had its purpose.
The UD is great, everything from transparent boost to fuzz in one pedal. I love mine.
Hmm. I just replaced my UD with a Plumes. Maybe I should donate it to the bass rig.
Except for the XVI, these are in the price realm of similar BOSS pedals, and the multi function ones are marginally cheaper than their Electroharmonix equivalents.
thank you josh for featuring this budget pedals..
fan from Philippines
"I'm hip I know it's a video game. I haven't played it because I've been playing Fallout 4 for seven years...." I have found my people
I'm still playing fallout 4.
I've been playing Diablo II for decades. I still suck at it, bit I've found a work-around to compensate for my lack of ability.
Favourite weird collaboration: Helmet w/ House of Pain, Just Another Victim
Was that from the Judgement Night soundtrack? That had a ton of off-kilter and great collaborations for such a mediocre movie (Sorry Denis Leary).
The Booyah Tribe(?)/Faith No More collab was actually fun. Wasn’t there a Sonic Youth/Cypress Hill cit that was decent as well?
I love that you did this episode!!! I've got 2 of these, the delay and reverb, and thy're outstanding!! GREAT SHOW!
Josh, seriously, we need a "If it sounds good it is good" t-shirt....My wallet will not thank you, but I will and get a XX-Large
ı bought seven of them 2 days ago after your thoughts and what happened, ı could not sleep 2 days because ı spent so much time with jamming them and the result is awesome thank you mate
Bizarre collaboration that I love: Lulu
Just bought the Aquarius as a birthday present for my brother in law. And only then recognized, that Josh gives these pedals a thumbs up.
"I don't want to get into that, I might do one later." Yeah, after the SOVTEK episode.
I got ID sounds like they were listening to Slint. I definitely remember when Mirror Ball came out but I didn’t know about the other songs. Thanks for another great video.
I had to show my wife the “if it sounds good” jingle. She didn’t seem as tickled as I am but still, great jingle.
my wife did actually laughed when she heard that :))))
I bought the Aquarius because of this video, I just got it today and I already love it! Thank you!
I love you josh for the Chris Farley coffee crystals ref! "YOU LIED TO ME, SHUT YOUR YAPPER! AS GOD IS MY WITNESS!"
U2 and BB King - When love comes to town.
Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps was one of my Dad's favorite albums when I was a kid. Primed me for a lifelong love of fuzz as well as acoustic vaguely countryish folksy guitar stuff.
Coolest collaboration: Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue
The bad seeds in general, with Nick and Blixa from einstürzende neubauten
Just being in the same zip code with Nick Cave makes almost anybody cooler..🤘
Jeff Buckley and Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins
Robert Smith and Billy Corgan :)
Thought about buying all of these to replace my ME-80.... then realized I would be creating a JOYO 7.... "tomato tomahto"
It’s not Blues, it’s rock’n’roll. 😁
Legendary album
Love the Chris Farley reference... and all those delicious JOYO pedals.. well done my friend!
David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails, Live. SOOOO GOOD!!!
Really pleased I came across this, been looking for a multi-modulation pedal that didn't break the bank so looked into the Joyo Vision and now just waiting for it to be delivered.
The song is actually called "I got sh¡t", it sounds massive live
It's called I Got Id; they just bill it as I Got Shit when they do it live.
@@17mountains And isn't id "Id" like the word "Id", not I.D.? Legit not sure, but that's what I've always called it.
@@jamesm601 Yeah it's definitely Id, not ID.
M K Alex is right on the title. It’s even in the lyrics. “I got memories, I got ...”
Oh, and the looper is great.
joyo american sound changed my life.
Ok i didn't expect you to pull the "i've been playing this the whole time". I'm sold on this IR sim it's such a great product. I've learned that tweeking the IR can make any amp sound great.
At this moment every Joyo pedal price went up 200%

@@JOYODirect Awesome tip man!
