Great, thorough review! Only thing I'd have liked to see would have been a comparison with a kindle device in the battery life section. Also nice to see a fellow Trekkie out here 🖖🏻😃
Based on my experience with the Go 10.3, the microphone is actually a pretty nifty feature- recording meetings and lectures, or even short audio notes to self is easy to access and very useful. I'm a little concerned about 2GB ROM w/full Android, though.
I'd pick the Boox Page for the extra RAM, larger screen, built-in speaker and page turn buttons. The screens are *very* similar and even having them side by side it's hard to spot a difference.
Thanks for your review ! Been waiting for one for a while. I’m currently struggling with choosing between Kobo Clara BW and Boox go 6 and for me the most important feature is an accessibility to dictionaries. Which one of them in your opinion is better in purpose of reading in a different languages ? Not many information with comparison of translation process on different e-ink devices.
I'd say it depends on your proficiency in the target language, what you want to achieve and also which languages you need. With Boox you get direct access to online translation services for whole sentences for a lot of languages, which can be really helpful. However, the downside of that approach is that you don't have on-device translation dictionaries available out of the box. Kobo on the other hand has built-in explanatory and translation dictionaries for selected languages that are generally working well (but not always perfect) and add context to the words you look up. That's probably the better approach for learning a language.
How do you set ragged-right justification in the built-in Boox reading app? I couldn't find a setting for it, and thus had to resort to using MoonReader+, which results in no reading statistics being recorded in the built-in Library.
Unfortunately, I don't have an account with my local library, but I've installed the Libby Android app and can browse the ebooks of my local library without any issues. So I'd be surprised if there where problems with borrowing and reading books tbh.
Struggling so hard to decide if i should get a 7 inch or this 6 inch. I currently have a boox 7.8 inch and i find it too big. 7 could be the sweet spot but maybe its 6. Anyone had experience with both 7 and 6 ? and what do you feel is not to small and not to big.
Got the 7 inch Boox Page in January and have now the Go Color 7 as well (in white). For me it's the perfect size and it has buttons! I wouldn't go back to a 6 inch screen, it's too much like my phone and 7 inch is pocketable as well (in a purse or bag).
Yes, the Kindle basic, but I never used that much. I gave it to my son very soon after buying it. Before the Page I had a Kindle Oasis... the same form factor. But that's only my opinion😅
I had the Go Color 7, but ended up returning it. For me, the whites looked muddy and it effected the contrast enough that it made reading black and white unpleasant.
If I'm not mistaken, Boox has never updated Android to a higher version. So it'll most likely be stuck at version 11 on the Go 6. As I said in the video, I don't think it's a huge deal right now, because most apps work just fine. And with a roughly 20% market share, Android 11 will most likely be supported by many apps for quite while.
Go and Poke lines seem a bit redundant for both to get updated but maybe I'm missing something that sets them apart. Looks like a decent android alternative to the kobo clara bw, although the os is becoming more and more outdated.
Boox will probably discontinue the Poke 5 soon - these are just too similar and there's no good reason why to get it anymore. I'm surprised they haven't removed it from the website already actually ...
I cant decided if I should buy this one or a Kobo Clara BW. Both have the same display and size but the Boox has an outdated OS and Kobo lacks android entirely. I think Kobo is slightly cheaper too but I have not found a feature that becomes a deal breaker for me so far
You summarized it perfectly already :D I'd say Kobo is the better choice if you don't want to tinker with the device. Its UI is cleaner, easier to use and the Klara B&W is just a much more focused ereader. The Boox device can do a lot more, but is also more difficult to use and prone to distractions.
I have a boox go 10.3 and write myself notes. Can i view my notes on this device ? I know i cannot edit them or make new notes as it doesnt have pen support.
Yes, you can view notes through the Boox Assistant app that you can download from the Boox website. You need to sync your notes to the Boox cloud and then log in with the Assistant app to that same account. Syncing notes takes a bit of time, but once that's done, you can open and view them with a click on the Go 6 as well.
Hey! I recently bought boox go 6. And I'm not able to enable playstore as it shows no option in app management. Can you please help me how can I enable it?
@@ChalidRaqami does not having updates means that the apps won't open after 2-3 years? Or is it just general device features updates? If it's the latter I don't really mind.
@@metallica1361 Both won't get upgrades to Android 12 most likely, so that's a potential concern with either one. It's definitely possible that some apps won't run in the future anymore as they'll be updated to only run on newer Android versions. But personally I think that will take a bit more time than 2-3 years for most apps. Android 11 still has a large user base (around 20 percent of all Android users last time I checked), which means that it'll take some time for that to go down and apps to drop support.
Other than potentially new apps in a year or 2 being unable to install, is there any other issue? Security patches don't really worry me on this kind of device.
A lot but probably I doubt it's a majority of potential consumers. I see it like a car stereo where it doesn't really matter as long as it's not from a decade ago. I wouldn't be surprised since this is a Chinese device. So if it isn't a financial thing, it could be a US legal thing as well. While app support in two years is a concern for many with them being android 11, they dismiss security concerns due to how they may use this device. While I agree with that mindset to some extent, my question is does being android 11 leave any network vulnerabilities that a bad actor can use through the device for other things on network.
@@StockyDT not so far, because they can still push security patches even though the core of the OS is older. eventually that may no longer be the case, and that could be a problem.
the more I've been following this rabbit hole of E-ink devices the more I think "oh, that thing can be solved with an iPad" (or your Android tablet of choice). Don't get me wrong, I love the idea but I'd rather make an iPad "dumb" by deleting apps and services and having a power bank battery next to it than struggle with everything on these e-ink devices
Its not about dumbing it down, Its a totally different technology. iPad is LED screen, and these devices are eink. The point of eink is less strain on the eyes and battery life.
I think these devices are meant for people who only want to read text. In that scenario, eink can't be beaten by something like the ipad. In a perfect world you have both devices and use them for different reasons.
@@channelDD25 I get it, you're right. I love my kindle. What I meant is the annotation part of these e-ink devices and their poor ecosystem. It's like the only three things these devices excel are portability, battery life, and they're easy to our eyes. But for those tradeoffs I'll rather use pen and paper for "writing/thinking" and an iPad to "store" the final versions of my notes.
