  • A look at the seashells and other beach combing treasures from Meigs point at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Connecticut on the Long Island sound. CORRECTION: I SAID OPERCULUM AND I MEANT UMBILICUS when referring to the hole under the flap of shell on the lobed moon snail, also called the shark's eye moon snail.
The main shells we found were huge piles of slipper shells and eastern oyster shells. If you look closely you will find flat slipper shells, lobed moon snails (shark's eye), greedy dove snail shells, periwinkles, blood arks, and blue mussels. You will also find eastern mud dog whelks (Nassarius family), new england dog or basket whelks (Nassarius family), and oyster drills.
PS. I spoke to a woman at the Nature Center and she asked that we limit the amount of shells we keep. It's a good idea to be aware that many state parks and/or other protected areas may limit seashell collecting. As always never take shells with the live mollusks or otherwise occupied shells (like hermit crabs, etc.)
PSS. Keep in mind there are often many names for the same shell.
