A lot of the horseshoe crab carapaces are just molts. They shed their shell as they grow. Some may die due to old age and they wash up on shore. The gulls may feed on them then but I don't believe they actually can kill them unless they get turned on their backs and can't right themselves. The gulls eat a lot of smaller crabs though like the green crabs. Thanks for watching and commenting! Shore life is so interesting!

I wonder too... The knobbed seem to be more common on the Cape and I'm lucky if I see a channeled whelk there.

I was just doing a quick search and ended up on a Mass.gov article that said" DMF considers channeled whelk to be depleted throughout their range within the waters under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth. A 2018 stock assessment of channeled whelk within Nantucket Sound showed this resource to be overfished with overfishing occurring." That is probably why I do not find many of them there....but still not sure about the knobbed in Long Island Sound. I'll keep looking!

@@j.roach-evans1010 it is interesting! I find both kinds on the jersey shore and they seem to both be equally common until you get to the outer banks where the more tropical shells replace them. I’ve also noticed knobbed whelks seem to be more prevalent on the cape. I wonder if it’s due to the currents or something. Maybe channeled whelks prefer more sheltered harbors.

@@Danny_Does_Drawings That sounds plausible! I just did another quick search and it did say that knobbed whelks can be found in deeper waters but it did not say that about the channeled whelks!

It is such a beautiful area! I didn't see the graffiti on the rocks - only up at the old fort. The first time I was here I found the sweetest little channeled whelk! That was in my first video here several years ago now. I've yet to walk out on the bay side, just along the shoreline on the spit. I'll have to try that next time! @@j.roach-evans1010 Anytime! The water is incredibly shallow at low tide so it makes it easy to go out! Hopefully it’s washed away by now, but l know some people and spray painted some of the larger rocks at the end of the peninsula the last time I was there. I’ve seen it done in Nahant too. So awful!

Hello A Smith I'm so glad you were able to explore Rhode Island's seashore. There are some gorgeous beaches for sure. Fun to find the shells but glad you put the live ones back...hopefully next time you'll find them empty. I often go off season - perhaps that's why I find more empty shells. No I don't usually find sea glass at Hampton beach on the other side of this channel - and I'm not on Seabrook beach that often which is around the corner from this sandy spit. But last month (May) I found a nice piece of blue sea glass on Wells beach in Maine.

Yes SomeDumbGamer! Indeed they are - luckily this area of the Cape did not seem hit hard - not like Sandwich and the ocean side of the Cape. I don't know why the Scallop colors are so great - but we did find some really pretty ones! I had to take a few of them home! It seems that the best place for them is the Vineyard Sound beaches and the Nantucket Sound beaches. (the south facing beaches)

Your funny SomeDumbGamer : ) I've been called seashell lady but never the Virgin Mary of shells! That's great - thank you LOL Your next stop for sand dollars will have to be Long Beach in Plymouth, Ma in the spring time. I've heard they still have a lot. Sandy Neck is a wild beach - we only walked a short way out - not as far as you! I have never been on the other side of the spit - so I do not know about finding shells there. I hope you enjoyed your long walk despite the scarcity of shells. Glad you found some nice pieces of quartz. Kalmus is always a great place for all kinds of shells. I can't wait to go back myself! J. Roach-Evans happy to report that kalmus beach was a success! Beautiful warm day and TONS of shells. Like ridiculous. I found Ponderous arks, blood arks, jingles, TONS of horseshoe crab molts, false quahogs, even some moon snails! Big ones too although they were broken. Even found a slightly worse for wear knobbed whelk! I rate it 9/10 for shelling in New England. Heading down to sandy neck, hoping to find. Nice whelk and maybe some sand dollars!

Hi SomeDumbGamer - So nice to hear of your beach combing visit to Kalmus Park Beach. I too find a lot of worn out and broken knobbed whelks there - but it is certainly fun to keep looking! It is beach combing heaven : D So glad you had such a successful treasure hunt!

I have jewelry that has a white operculum in it - so yes. But I think from shells in the West Indies. So not sure you would find one in New England?

J. Roach-Evans LBI New Jersey, we often find bleached seashells there but not many whelks at all.

I just found this link - with a little info. patch.com/new-jersey/middletown-nj/wild-knobbed-whelks-wash-up-on-a-winter-beach I agree with the writer - winter is a great time to find shells. Especially after a storm. I found HUGE moon snails one year in New Hampshire after a storm.

They are hard to find - I have a huge one I found when I was a kid in Rhode Island. So I think - depending where you are - Napatree Point may be your best bet of finding one. I"d go in Spring after winter storms.

Me too Jenn P! Although I often can't wait for summer....I like to go on the warmest days of winter/spring/fall - because there's lots to find especially after a storm. Just wear lots of layers : )
