Should you buy the A7sII | 2024

  • Lo and Behold! The A7sII has continued to be used by some and fiscally available to a lot of creators who want to make content but don't want to shell out $1,000+ to get an R6 or ZV-E1/E10.
    As Mirrorless Cameras go, I believe this should be a quick grab for a lot of people who want to get their foot in the door for quality video. The S- series camera for Sony is designated for the video capabilities and not necessarily for their photography.
    This thing comes with 120fps at 1080 as well as 60fps at 1080 for lower light slow motion. Sitting in the 4k field you'll be able to get 24fps and 30fps to cover your cinematic video as well as your social media and content creation video. (Cine-24 Socials-30)
    You will have different profiles for photo and video. You get S-log2 and S-log 3 under the picture profiles.
    You do have a hot shoe so you will be able to do off camera flash as well as on camera. (My suggestion is purchasing the Good V1 series per your camera model to the beginners and professionals artificial light)
    Spotty auto focus and a lot of focus breathing the further from the subject you are. If you can, use manual focus in all instances as this camera is old enough that the technology being released for face detection is...lacking.
    Do I think this is a perfect camera to compete with something released just 3 years ago? Absolutely not. For the cost though you are getting some good qualities in here and you will be surprised.
    I do hope you found this video at least somewhat education and informative as it pertains to buying an 8 year old mirrorless camera.
    As always, if you've got the money, buy a better camera. If you don't have the money, buy what you can and go more investing into your camera lenses. Cameras you outgrow and change, camera lenses rarely need to be truly upgraded.

    Great video! I have the A7SII, and while it is indeed a great camera, as a solo videographer, I really really crave those two things: a flip screen (so I can see myself) and better autofocus. FX30 is probably going to be my next jump!

    Hi Dusty, I don't know if you are aware of this on the Sonys. If you use Slog3/SGamet3 and over-expose by 1-7/2.0 stops it really really helps with the autofocus & reduces the noise at higher iso's ( once you bring it back in post ).

      I know that the Sony systems that don't have the S suffix are primarily for photography. The ones without the R prefix are like the underdog photography camera that still have camera functions. I never got to get my hands on the a7iv. I just bought the Lumix S5iix and a lot of people are talking about using the Fx3. I just bought an A7Sii, mostly for video, ‘upgraded’ from a ZV-E10. I miss the features on the ZV-E10, but the full frame quality is worth it. My ZV-E10 could never get that dynamic range and low light shots that I got with the A7Sii. However, The Sony 50mm fe f1.8 is terrible. Idk if I got a defected one, but I really am struggling with the AF and the rolling shutter…I borrowed a viltrox 24mm from a friend and the AF was significantly better…so I’m thinking of getting a Sony 35mm fe f1.8. Heard it’s better with AF, as it came out in 2021 so the firmware is newer hence better AF speed and performance overall. We shall see.

      @DustyMedler  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So here's my opinion on the camera, and I'll do another video too to show you a little more on what the camera can do.
      If you are just starting to transition into video and can get it used within your budget, I think this is a good beginner transition as you learn what it is you actually want out of a camera.
      This is a video focused camera. It'll allow you to shoot in S-Log to learn color grading which is a valuable skill. It'll give you the chance to start playing with the idea of switching out of this camera into something that fits you more down the road.
      That being said, if I had to make the decision again, I would still do it because it offers 4k 60fps and 1080p at 120fps. The photography is great but it MUST be exposed properly. There's a little wiggle room when it comes to under exposing but I wouldn't push it too far because the grain can be severe. Again, I'd start with this again if I had to restart again as a hybrid shooter.

    Hey dusty, I need some help. I just picked up an a7sii, and the AF almost feels broken. It has a metabones E -> EF mount. In video and photo mode, I go half way on the shoot button and it cycles through the range of focus, but NEVER gets anything into focus. I have tried with a canon 50mm 1.8, and a large telephoto canon lens. The larger one was better (marginally). I can’t even get it to work as well as you got in this video. MF works fine. I intend to use it for sports videography, so the AF is vital to me. Should I look for a native lens?

    • @DustyMedler
      @DustyMedler  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Sophie! I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be focusing, but I know that my camera needs to hunt every time it focuses quite a bit. Doesn’t have a really snappy auto focus system consistently. I also haven’t used any third-party lenses on it except for sigma. I don’t know if the meta ones adapter Is helping. Although that’s an incredible adapter system, this camera again is a bit chunky on auto focus.
      Are you able to get the camera to focus at all? There’s a small switch next to the viewfinder and make sure that’s switched to AF.

      you;re just stacking bad omens on bad omens , the a7sii is cdaf on video , a slow cdaf at that ( not the rapid dfd panny has ) , the adapter also has a limiter to work half on half with pdaf ( only viltrox adapters can do this or its variant ) or a full cdaf ( still limited by the camera itself ) , the 50 1.8 is also a micromotor lens , not even a usm motor - even on 1dx cameras it stutters on af, if you need a usable af , look elsewhere or enable assist and pull manual.
      adapters also have weird limitations based on models
      metabones are mediocre and not fast at all, but it does "work" on most lenses
      mc-11 sigmas are quick but only for sigma lenses

    • @DustyMedler
      @DustyMedler  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you were exclusively doing video it might be a worthwhile change but I think because photography is a main focus and video a secondary, the M50ii is a much better camera overall for photography because it has a better sensor and more megapixels in case you want to crop your photos without losing resolution. Plus the a7sii doesn't have face tracking, or any tracking, which makes this camera very difficult to use a lot of the time even for video. It works but you definitely have the better of the two cameras.
      The only real upside in that scenario is that your current camera can shoot 120fps slow mo but it's at a very low resolution but you can shoot 1080p at 60fps and slow it down to 40% and pretty much have the same effect.
      Hold tight with the M50! At least until you got a good grasp on your video desires and what type of hybrid shooting you'll be growing into.

      @@DustyMedler tysm for the quick answer. I like the M50 mark2 very much and it works for me but here where I live (Brazil) is quite hard to find lenses and accessories for eos m cameras, my adapter for example I had to buy internationally and here we have high taxes on anything that comes from outside, I was thinking about buying a grip from custom battery grips that would solve my camera's battery being so short, I just don't know if I should keep investing on it because the system has been discontinued, and as an APSC camera it's less durable than buying a used full frame camera while the m50 still has ok market value for reselling. Here photography equipment is really expansive so I am looking for an alternative which I will basically stay with for the long as possible.

    • @DustyMedler
      @DustyMedler  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@viniciuslll I had no idea about that in Brazil! I'd imagine pretty much buying any camera system would be expensive there.
      Durability was a big thing that changed me from upgrading too honestly. I feel like the time to upgrade, just in my opinion, is when your hands move faster on your settings than your camera can keep up with.
      When I noticed this I started missing shots I knew I could make had the button layout been a professional layout optimized for adjusting the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed.
      If you're in the Canon system, an inexpensive full frame upgrade, almost exclusively for photography, would be the Canon 6D and you can get those pretty cheap.
      The next I would suggest is getting something like this camera here, the A7Sii but you'll have much more performance in the video field than the photography. Although I have been working with this camera and it does fine for me! It's just not ideal that it's a 12mp sensor because you really can't crop at all without loss of quality.

      @@DustyMedler hi thanks, I was thinking about buying a Sony a7r or a7 in used condition. also I can buy an adapter and use my vintage lenses on those while researching for good 3rd party Sony lenses. I was just wondering if they are not too outdated, other than that I find these two cameras attend what I need, high res, with decent video. I know auto focus on those is not good but I don't mind it because as I said I am used to using vintage glass, and for what I was looking it would be actually am improvement in focus peaking (canon M50ii focus peaking is not really great). What do u think about these 2 models? The market price for these Sony's body here is about the selling price of my M50 with it's kit lens so i would not spend basically any money switching, only with the adapter at first, what I also think is that by investing in Sony glass with any of these cameras I can in the future buy a newer version of the body and keep using the same lenses.
