    Put it this way: a laptop is meant to be carried around. That means all the parts will have a size/weight constraint to consider (aka they have to balance out the aspects they compromise). PC parts don't have that limiting factor.

    • @AragorN88
      @AragorN88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      Not to mention a GPU on a laptop will not have the same performance as on a desktop because of the cooling limitation of the laptop. You are buying an inferior version with the only advantage being that you can easily carry it around.

    • @LaughingOrange
      @LaughingOrange 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@AragorN88 Also no battery that fits a laptop form factor will ever be able to supply 500W, which is on the low side for a desktop PC. More power often means more frames, so a 350W GPU will always be better than a 150W GPU with the same architecture and manufacturing node.

    • @DarkonFullPower
      @DarkonFullPower 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@AragorN88 Origin disagreed. Their "Laptop frame, Desktop parts" was (when I bought it) as powerful as you could make any consumer PC on market.
      Hot and heavy, but it outclassed anyone I went up against. (Again, at the time)

    • @prawtism
      @prawtism 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't they have to fit into standardized cases? They have all the same considerations, just in a 10x space

    • @TF_NowWithExtraCharacters
      @TF_NowWithExtraCharacters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@prawtism We're comparing laptop parts vs PC parts here, they have different standard sizes for each. So say you want to have a part that can hit X levels of performance, but in a laptop part it has to be smaller/lighter/better heat management than a similar PC part. Even if that can somehow be achieved, it has to cost a fair bit more than the PC part, just cos of all the extra tech and engineering that goes into it. In other words, for the same amount of money, the PC parts you can buy will almost always outperform laptop parts (assuming we're not talking about shortages, of course).

    As someone that has been exclusively using laptops for the past 10+ years, I agree with her recommendation. While laptops can still be great gaming machines, it is significantly more expensive than a desktop of similar quality. Unless you have a specific reason to get a laptop (e.g. I travel a lot for work and need something portable), I highly recommend desktops.

    • @duelgundam
      @duelgundam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree.
      Even though my job does not require a laptop, I got a work laptop for things like typing on the go(I learned the hard way that even though you could do most work on an iPad, some things are better done on a laptop/PC environment when you're overseas).
      My main gaming workhorse is my desktop and my consoles, but having a laptop to do some things outside, like typing up something as a hobby, is honestly better than the annoyance of doing it on an iPad/tablet using its software keyboard.

      If I remember right, last I checked the build to order sites, the GPU's aren't insanely overpriced there. Resellers and stores are where the overpriced versions were, but they weren't bad on the websites. But with that said, it was a 2-3 month wait for a build instead of 1-3 weeks.

    Honestly though these days, gaming laptops have gotten really good on their own. And especially so factoring in the cringe desktop GPU shortages in the recent years, resulting in higher pricing, etc.
    Getting a good laptop then maybe plugging it into an external monitor (though laptop displays have gotten good these days too) has been a common solution for some people in the past couple years; especially for those are move around a little more often.
    The good ones might be more expensive to start with compared to the modular nature of a desktop for peeps on a budget though. so in the end I think it really just depends on the individual's needs and resources.

    Gaming laptops are WAY different than they used to be back in the day.
    I can totally agree with the lion about choice of CPU and GPU when choosing a new laptop since it's pretty much a fix thing (it's gonna be that specific gpu and that specific cpu you'll get with the device).
    Speaking of experience, i use a HP Omen 15 with a Ryzen 7 4800h and nvidia RTX 2060 (costed me $1180 bucks last year)
    And i can play many current gen games at ultra settings without problems at 60 FPS.

    Pretty much my take on it as well, that's definitely the voice of experience. I don't need the portability of a laptop (and in cases where I do, I have my smartphone and a work laptop to cover it). So it always seemed like one of those "pay more for less" deals.
    Funny she mentions build-to-order. I learned how to build my own in my early teens, but these days I definitely do buy from independent vendors because it's less hassle and, frankly, I run out of patience and my airflow sucks lol.

    Shows us what she knows! I spent all of my college years with a gaming laptop, and played a ton of stuff, not to mention rendered 3d animations! Sure, rendering took forever, the games would slow down to a handicapped snail's pace and the poor machine died unceremoniously while rendering a video, but it got me through! I totally never wanted a pc all that time and totally didn't get ecstatic when I got a desktop!

    She's 100% right. I have an MSI GF63 with GTX 1650, 12 GB RAM, and i5 9th Gen for around 675 USD. My friend bought a prebuilt Gaming PC with Free Monitor for the same price. I know it's different from country to country, but if you're looking for a full gaming experience with a PC don't buy a gaming laptop. Build a PC because even though the initial buying price might be steep, the PC is modular. You can always change the parts later and not have to buy a whole new laptop just so that you can get a spec upgrade.

    Well... that's kinda based.
    If you need portability and need good performance on the go, PLUS you don't want your electricity bills go up a gaming laptop is the way to go. I have a ASUS G15 with RTX3060 and happy with it. Also the prices in my country to build a desktop PC are really high, maybe twice the price comparing to United States or Japan.
    I think it depends on use case IMO

  • @Fraggr92
    @Fraggr92 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not to mention that you can run into all sorts of issues with heat and thermal throttling that are a lot harder to address on a laptop than they would be on a desktop. If a desktop's cooling systems get clogged up with dust and start to thermal throttle your components then all you have to do is take the side cover off and clean all the dust out and it'll be back to normal. If the same thing happens to a laptop then it's usually much harder to clean out. Components are often a lot harder to get to and some laptops don't even let you take the back cover off without voiding the warranty. Blowing air into the laptop isn't very effective, often leaves dust inside it still, and can risk damaging components inside the laptop, etc.
    Overall if you want to play PC games then you're much better off buying a desktop, even with current GPU prices. That way you'll also have the option of upgrading later down the line depending on what parts you pick, where as with a laptop you'd be forced to just replace it with a better one if you wanted better performance. Laptops are only really good as backups to have in addition to a proper gaming desktop, or when you have no other alternatives. They are not really meant to be used as your primary gaming platform.

    One of the key limitations of a laptop are the power and thermal constraints to ensure they're portable and doesn't set your house on fire.
    Using an extreme example, an RTX 4090 Laptop chip is around the same performance tier as the RTX 4070Ti/RTX 3090 Desktop. Meanwhile the actual 4090 is in a class of its own.
