  • After adopting my Greyhound, Olive 2 and a half years ago, I've learnt a few things along the way which I think might help you if you are just bringing your own Greyhound into your family. Also, my video comes to you from my new Hamptons style home by the coast, and you'll also see some of my beautiful plants. A Greyhound tip video, plus house and plant tour, all in one! So, what are some of the top tips you should know when adopting a Greyhound? Watch my video to find out!

    Watched Olive stand in your bathroom head down zoned out... our Winston did this also. Took him to a Greyhound vet. We were told he was having mild Epilepsy seizures. Epilepsy often happens in Greyhounds. Winston was put on meds. They helped him for a couple of years. As our Winston grew older, his seizures grew to Grand mal seizures. Winston started eating less as his seizures progressed. Winston went from 94 lbs to 72 lbs in 2 months. Our Vet advised us to end his suffering. Winston was the best companion, loved to travel, loved all people and animals. Olive may just be ignoring you. But you may want to watch her as time passes. Love watching your videos. Wishing you and Olive all the best.

    Okay so, this video is the most valuable I’ve seen regarding greyhounds emotional/psychological needs and behaviors. I’ve watched several videos about the breed, and not one of them brought up sleep startle. And the cafe mat? Genius! I don’t even have a dog, but if/when I do, a greyhound is top of my list. Add in the beautiful home and plants? Great video! Thanks for sharing ❤️

    My Greyhound is amazing. She was abandoned and starving. I was worried about how she’d behave with my other dogs and 8 cats. She is a proper mother. 2 of my cats sleep with her. She loves people and loves to run around. She does come back. I wish I was as relaxed as she is . She’s not bothered about dogs or animals outside. She loves her home and she loves to sleep. I’d never had a greyhound before because I thought they’d be high maintenance. They are not! They are placid loving and kind. Thank you for sharing your story. X

    What a fantastic house and what a wonderful greyhound! We love Olive and we were thrilled to see a new Olive video. We have two greyhounds - Scoby, our black and white princess and Havee our beautiful black boy. I completely agree they are the most amazing dogs. They’re stubborn, they’re silly, they’re gentle, they’re soppy... We can’t imagine life without them! Thank you for the Olive update. It’s made our day!

      How fantastic you’re fostering! That’s such an important job! Foster carers are so important in the transition of a greyhound from professional athlete to pet. With you he or she will learn about glass doors, stairs, that the vacuum cleaner is safe, how to get in and out of a car, and, most importantly, that pays and cuddles and people are nice ❤️ All the best with your hound!

    • @christopherfinn7986
      @christopherfinn7986 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Natalie Powell. We find having two no problem, especially when we go away and they go into kennels where they are happy with each other’s company. Our first pair were an “item”. Pablo and Susie get on OK. He’s nearly eight and quite curmudgeounly but she is a year younger and still very bouncy, so I have to “fight” with her every so often. But they both can sense when the other is getting affection and come and butt in. We wouldn’t have them any other way. Chris.

    Thanks for the nice video. I had two ex racing greyhounds. They became the greatest companions. I worked with them and they became absolutely reliable. They would even abandon a deer chase when I‘d call them off. I only hooked them on a leash when there were too many distractions like in the city center.
    They also learned to respect our other animals. Over all, they were eager to bring joy to us and be the best companions. If I get another dig it will be a grey.

I hope it goes well for you. Lots of love and patience as your hound settles in. I wonder if you might be able to take your hound to school, as I have done a few times. Olive loves kids! Hi there! Great video! Sleep startle is actually common in sight/scent hounds. We have a 16y.o. Basenji (sight AND scent hound). Not long after we adopted him, he'd curl up on our lap and fall asleep. We discovered that, if we didn't gently let him know we were getting up or he needed to wake up, he'd growl. A rather funny trait.

My wife and I adopted a retired racing greyhound in 2020, and she is the best dog I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I don't think that we'll ever not have a greyhound. Beautiful hound, beautiful home, we had 2 white/black ex-racers in our lives for around 10 years unfortunately we lost them both within 6 months of each other, I loved them both dearly and still miss them everyday. They are certainly different to other dogs but are fantastic, loving, gentle souls I would recommend them to anyone. I agree with all your tips and the last one would be great advice for anyone who does already have or is thinking about getting any kind of dog, take some time to read dog language. I meet so many people out and about who just let their dog off and take no further interest for the duration of the walk while the dog is bounding up to people and animals with no manners, then they get angry when another dog growls at them or worse.

    • @NataliePowellAGreytLife
      @NataliePowellAGreytLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry you lost your hounds 😭 as with any kind of dog or pet - they just don’t live long enough, so they! I can’t imaging going through that loss with both of them within 6 months! Poor you 😢 As for reading dog language, I think it’s so important, but having said that, Olive was bitten by another Greyhound (unfortunately) just last week and it happened so fast! I’m always so careful, but sometimes no matter how careful you are, things can happen in the blink of an eye and catch you off guard. The bite this time wasn’t as bad as the last one, but still required surgery to stitch it up. However, she suffered a massive hematoma afterwards, and we had 5 trips to the vet in 4 days! She is recovering nicely now, but is still very swollen, with a tennis ball sized lump on her side.

    Hi Olive, Mouse here. I'm a 4 year old retired racer-boy, and I'm black with a few white points too. Mum has now subscribed to your Mum's channel, so we're both looking forward to watching what you get up to. Mum says that lots of things are the same for both of us. I have my Staff well trained to look after me after nearly two years, and we all go on holiday together in the caravan. I have a café quilt, which lives in the back of the car and comes out for me to lie on when we go out for a puppacino. Mum made it, and also my winter coat and my bandanna, but it's not really cold enough here for more clothes, as we're in north Queensland. Mum would like to pass on another tip, if that's OK. She says I'm a messy eater and drinker, and a big rubber BBQ mat under my water and food bowl stands is the perfect solution. I don't know what she's on about.... What's wrong with a little puddle? Hope to see more from you soon. Mouse xx

    Hurrah! Another Olive vid! I was starting to wonder what had happened to her! Love the house tour and the cafe mat idea - really does make a black grey more visible. Re pet insurance, it’s really worth having for the third party cover alone, which could run into millions in the horrific instance that, say, your grey causes a motorway pileup or something. Obviously one would do everything to avoid that but some circumstances really are unforeseen.

He also managed to rip out a dew claw 3 times in under 2 yrs. After they've ripped them out a few times they might not grow back which is fine. Its actually safer. Hope u an olive have a greyt life

    Olive is gorgeous, what a beauty. My lurcher (grey X lab mix) is called Zorro and he's basically a chunky version of Olive and is the same colour also! He will be 13yrs old in August, we got him as a rescue from Dogs trust when he was 4mths old! We already had a 6yr old German Shepherd cross, but got Zorro as was struggling with infertility at time and told highly unlikely to get pregnant! Zorro came home with us Dec 07' and by Aug 08' we were pregnant lol. Our boys are 11 and 9yrs now and they are like peas in a pod with Zorro! Although we are now having health problems with him which is worrying, like yourself we have insurance and I'm so glad we do!

A chunky version of Olive, that’s funny 😂 Amazing that you were able to get pregnant after bringing Zorro home - what a blessing 🥰 so sad to hear you’re finding health issues - what’s happening with him? Hope he has many more years with you.

    Thank you for the video. Congratulations on your new house. It is lovely. Your rules were helpful, especially the last one because that is where we have the most problems with our little lady. We live in the San Diego area, and when we take her to the dog beach (which is her favorite place) she loves to run. And other dogs love to chase her and she loves to lead a chase, but then when she stops there are problems because all the other excited dogs crowd up around her. I've thought about putting her muzzle on her, but I don't want her to be unable to protect herself. It's quite a predicament because she is herself not an aggressive dog (although sometimes she will play too roughly with smaller dogs that have no chance of outrunning or outmaneuvering her), but she doesn't attack them in an aggressive way. She might nip, but I get that it might be misinterpreted by the other dog and owners. It's funny because she will bully bigger love-sot males of other breeds that keep attempting to mount her. As long at they aren't aggressive, she will mercilessly (I wanna say attack, but you know what I mean) batter and nip-at-the-face of these love-sot brutes who follow her around like middle school boys after the first girl to blossom. It's very funny to watch. She's fixed, of course, but I think they just can't ignore those long legs...lol. Anyways, thanks for the video, and Olive is a lovely girl.

      Phalanx Cuthalion thank you so much for your kind words!
      Yes, the interaction with other dogs can be tricky sometimes, and particularly because greyhounds are a very misunderstood breed and people have very misinformed ideas about them being aggressive and dangerous. I personally believe that they should only be muzzled around other dogs if the other dogs are also muzzled, as, like you said, it otherwise leaves them unable to defend themselves properly if something happens. That’s why when you’re part of a Greyhound community and you all appreciate the breed and how they work, if you can all agree to muzzle them for a group play date, then everything should be fine. Sometimes a muzzle can also be protection from any accusations from people who try to blame your dog for biting if there is a bit of a scuffle. If your hound is muzzled then at least you have a strong argument for defending your hound against any accusations of bites to other dogs.
      And chasing in play is normal and acceptable as long as there is some turn taking in who is doing the chasing and who is being chased. That’s when you really do need to observe and make sure your hound isn’t being chased in an aggressive way, and also that your hound isn’t chasing in a fixated way that isn’t appropriate.
      Olive also HATES being mounted by other dogs, and she has defended herself noisily a few times when some male dog has tried with her. That’s really one of the only times we’ve heard her bark and I was surprised at how deep her bark is. Other than that she is totally silent.
      Thanks so much for watching 😊

    Great video! Olive is so cute! Love the house too! :D A few questions: how do you get her to stand up everytime you want (when you were mentioning the cafe) and how do you get her to stay so calm when she's on the mat? - I'm thinking small dog/prey-type animal going by - so that she doesnt start chasing!- Also how did you get her to face "away" from a dog she's so excited to see?
    Thanks!
    Super helpful tips ! And a big congrats to you because it looks like you've made a really good use of those 2 years with her and you taught her loads! she looks great!

    • @NataliePowellAGreytLife
      @NataliePowellAGreytLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much 😊 Lots of things to answer, I’ll do my best to cover everything 🤣
      How do I get her to stand up: if she’s on the lead, it’s really simple - I just pick up the lead and make a move as though I’m getting up and she immediately gets up to follow me. If she’s not on the lead and lying down at home, can be another matter entirely! If she’s in a bed and I want her to get up to come outside to do her toileting before bedtime for example, I spend quite a bit of time coaxing her up and have to end up either speaking very firmly and a little crossly at her (which I don’t like to do), or I start trying to pick up her bed from underneath her which usually makes her get up. Greyhounds can be very stubborn! 😂 I’ve even resorted to getting her leash and putting it on her to move her off her bed, and that usually works.
      How do I get her to stay calm on the mat: Greyhounds are usually pretty chill dogs. They also like to lie down a lot, so Olive is good at lying quietly on her mat and if I’m with her she is very happy just to be at my side - unless I get up to go inside the cafe and then she wants to come with me and hops up to follow. If a dog comes over to say hello or have a sniff I do what I described above - make as though I’m getting up to go and make her stand up. I hold onto her lead the whole time so that if she did see something that she wanted to run after, she wouldn’t be able to.
      How do I get her to face away: I grab her with both hands and manoeuvre her around to face her butt towards the other dog. I wouldn’t do it if the other dog was approaching aggressively though. I’d high tail it out of there!
      I hope that answers your questions! 😊

    Good video where I learned about pet insurance, sleep startle, doggy coats, crates, cafe mats and letting sleeping dogs lie. I'm interested in adopting so I enjoyed all the tips. I'm in Perth too so it was great to see Scarb Beach and Yelo cafe. I'll look out for you and Olive next time I'm out that way. I'm curious about what the Green Collar is and how you get one? Love your new conservatory!

    • @NataliePowellAGreytLife
      @NataliePowellAGreytLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Small world! We also frequent the Little Bay in North Beach as well, lots of dogs go there too.
      The green collar is given to Greyhounds who successfully pass a test to see how they react with small dogs. If they show no signs of aggression, and can tolerate small dogs being around, they are awarded a literal green collar which means that they are allowed to go out in public without a muzzle. It’s not to be confused with being allowed off lead, which legally no greyhound is allowed to do unless on fenced private property, for their protection and the protection of things they may want to chase. If you adopt a greyhound through the organisation’GAP’ (greyhounds as pets) it will come to you already tested and with a green collar. If you get your hound elsewhere, as I did, you can send your hound to GAP for a few days and pay for them to test your hound and hopefully earn their green collar. Some people choose not to do this because they worry about the stress for their hound, but this means that until the law changes, they will have to continue putting a muzzle on their hound in public. Olive is very sociable with both people and dogs, so she actually enjoyed the experience. It’s also worth noting that the green collar doesn’t guarantee that a hound is friendly with other dogs. Olive’s most recent bite was from a green collared greyhound 😢
      Good luck with your greyhound search! Maybe see you around!

      Thank you for appreciating the plant part of my video as well 😁 As for the floors, ours are engineered timber floorboards. They do scratch fairly easily if I accidentally move a piece of furniture that doesn’t have protective pads underneath, but so far Olive’s nails haven’t marked it. I do use a dremel on her nails fairly regularly (I have a video about that on my channel) and I use it when I start to hear her nails clicking as she walks. So I recommend keeping nails filed. Some greyhounds find slippery floors challenging, like tiles for example. What kind of floors do you have?

We are in Arizona 😆

    • @NataliePowellAGreytLife
      @NataliePowellAGreytLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My first bit of advice would be to check what the laws are where you are regarding off lead greyhounds. In many places it’s illegal. One of the main reasons is that greyhounds often just head for the horizon when let off lead and as they are notoriously bad at recall, you may not be able to catch them before they run onto a road or something. So a fenced area is best. See how your hound behaves offlead in a safe area and preferably without other dogs around at first until you work out what sort of prey drive your hound has, and until you know how they behave with other dogs. Some greyhounds freak out if approached by other dogs, especially the little fluffy ones, so take your time getting to know your hound. Others, like Olive, love it! Where I am there are some veterinary centres which have fenced exercise yards and people can rent them for half an hour or so to let their dog off lead safely. Or you might check out a fenced dog park at a time when it is empty and you can have it to yourself. Some greyhounds love to go on hikes, while others have the ‘concrete feet tantrums’ where they plant their feet and refuse to walk further than they want. My son once took his greyhound on a hike and had to carry him all the way back as he refused to walk! I also recommend finding a greyhound group and having get together a with them for group walks. I’m sure you’ll find a group on Facebook where you can search for hound owners nearby. All the best!

    I am on my third adopted Greyhound. They are incredible animals! And make absolutely awesome pets! As far as leaving the muzzle on, I only recommend doing so when all the dogs have muzzles on. For instance at a greyhound Gathering.
    Just like in everyday life, you do not want to give up your weapons for the sake of others who would misuse them. It only leaves you defenseless. Animals have a way of sensing a weakness or reduced ability at defense on the part of another animal and your dog needs his teeth to correct other dogs and protect themself.

    • @TRUTHISABSOLUTE777
      @TRUTHISABSOLUTE777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And on the topic of Greyhound defense. They tend to have very thin skin as others have pointed out. And they are not built for fighting other canines.
      In my years of going to Greyhound Gatherings and meeting other people that have Greyhounds I have seen a few hounds that have sustained some horrible injuries inflicted by other dogs who ran up on them as they were being walked on their leash and they were attacked by these loose dogs.
      The last one I saw I nearly lost his life to a pitbull. Anytime you walk your Greyhound I strongly advise that you carry at bare minimum pepper spray and some type of wedging object like a large stick or something that can be used to pry apart another dog's mouth. Ideally you also want to take the simple steps to meet whatever your State's requirements are for concealed carry and have a firearm on your person when walking your Greyhound out and about. Pepper spray is not always effective against fighting breed dogs that are in what is called a Red Zone state of mind. They cannot be dissuaded by pepper spray and you will have to utilize more lethal protective measures.

      They do get along, but the cat (who turns 20 this year) is very much the boss...of all of us 😂 If you have a cat, it is very important that you ask for a cat friendly Grey, as some still do have a strong prey drive and this could be difficult. Plenty of greys are cat friendly, and it also depends on the personality of your cat. Our cat is also very good with my son’s greyhound who occasionally comes to visit, and treats him just as he treats Olive. Their first encounter did begin with overly interested attention from the visiting greyhound who was promptly put in his place with a few swipes from the cat. Since then, they ignore each other and the hound has at times stood patiently over the cat as he ate dinner, waiting for him to be finished so that he could finish the scraps 😂 Supervision at the beginning is key.

      Thank you 😊 I’ve heard of people getting them as a first dog, but as far as dogs go they’re quite quirky and sometimes don’t behave like other dogs do. If you want a pet who loves to just lounge around with you, they’re great! You’d need to understand the things that make greyhounds a bit different, like not just letting them off for a play at a dog park for example. It depends on what your needs and expectations are out of a dog as a pet, your lifestyle and so on. Maybe go visit a greyhound adoption agency and hang out with some greyhounds and see if they’d be a good fit for you. I think they’re awesome pets, very loving, pretty docile, already toilet trained mostly, can be great with other pets or small animals, but not always. Good luck!

    The sleep startle (for ex race greyhounds) is likely due to the fact that they live in a kennel and no one can get to them before enough noise is made to wake them fully. Just another thing that most eventually adapt too, but we all should be respectful of their sleep regardless.

We still miss Lilly, but our husky girl perked up with a "little" (she's half his size!) brother to boss around, and we adore him too. He's very sweet....they are the gentlest dogs ever.

    Heyy! Thanks for this. We live in London and we are thinking about adopting one. I saw Olive was on the beach without a leash, how did you manage to do this , as in having her off leash in an open space ? Is she good at coming back to you when you call her/ did you train her ?
    And..nice plants !!!

      Hi there 🖐🏻 I’m so glad you’re thinking of adopting a greyhound! They’re the best! The beach we took Olive to is very spacious and not near any roads, and I waited until she had bonded with me before letting her off for a run, and I did it gradually and cautiously. However, many greyhounds will just leave you in their dust and head for the horizon, never to return, so I would be very cautious! Also check if it is legal to do so where you are, it may not be 😅 It’s a good idea to practise recall in a safe enclosed space and don’t trust recall to work if they see something they want to chase. All the best with it! ❤️

    Agree with all your tips, apart from needing lots of coats ( one or two outdoor ones are fine!). We also put on a "pyjama" coat for cold winter nights (UK) when the heating's off. Like the cafe mat, easier to carry than a bed but still good for Grey's to sit on hard surfaces.

    • @NataliePowellAGreytLife
      @NataliePowellAGreytLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Angela, it really depends on your hound. Some dogs can be afraid of slippery surfaces and can also injure themselves if they tend to rush around on the floor and slide around. For Olive, she spends a lot of time just lying around sleeping and hasn’t had any problems with our floors when walking around. Also her nails haven’t been a problem as far as scratching the floors is concerned, but that could also depend on what type of wood your floors are made of.

    Thank you so so much on all your tips! As much as fearful, I am pretty excited while doing the research before adopting one!
    I often heard hound are mostly toilet trained but can I also ask how often hound needs to do their toilet? Do you have space to let her pee/poo inside the house? I work 9-5 with a carpeted house, not sure how this area works.

    • @NataliePowellAGreytLife
      @NataliePowellAGreytLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nancy Yu An excellent question! Most Greyhounds are good at waiting to go outside to go to the toilet but I’m sure there would be exceptions. As far as Olive is concerned, she stays inside all day while I’m at work, with no issues. I have got her into a routine of going out to the toilet first thing in the morning, and then she waits until I get home in the afternoon to go again. She also makes it through the night without having to go outside, and I make sure going outside for a wee is the last thing she does before bed. This is why Greyhounds make great apartment dogs, as they are very good at being inside dogs. When I send Olive out to toilet, I usually tell her ‘do wees’ and then I praise her when she goes. She has learnt that this is what I want her to do when I say it and she usually complies. So maybe have a word or a phrase you can use for your hound to associate toileting with. I also try to take her to the same area outside so she knows that that’s the place she can go. Some greyhounds I have heard of may take a little while to work out where they’re allowed to go and where they’re not, and there may be a few accidents as they work it out. But be persistent and positive, and praise when things happen the way you want and I’m sure your hound will figure out where their toilet is.
      Don’t be fearful! You’re doing a wonderful thing, giving a retired greyhound a home and a new life. It may take them a little time to learn how to be a pet, and how to be a dog, but with love, routine, patience and positivity, I’m sure you will absolutely adore your hound and you will have a loyal and loving dog.
      All the best!
      Natalie

      Natalie Powell Thank you so much for your prompt reply Nat!
      Can I ask another question? Does greyhound suitable to certian type of food - wet, dry, raw, sth like that? Or go according to each individual hound or owner's preference?

    • @NataliePowellAGreytLife
      @NataliePowellAGreytLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nancy Yu I think it depends on what you can afford, and what suits your hound’s tummy. Greyhounds can tend to have sensitive tummies and you might need to try a few different things until you find the food that suits your hound best. Olive always ends up with diarrhoea if she eats beef. My son’s hound gets sick if he eats chicken. Some prefer raw food, others prefer cooked meat and veggies with rice, and some like kibble. Olive has a tin of wild caught sardines in olive oil with a high quality grain free kibble for breakfast, and a raw food patty (biologically appropriate raw food, or BARF) with kibble for dinner. BARF is quite expensive, but I found Olive’s tummy is best on it. Some people say they are at risk of pancreatitis if they are given too much oil or fat, but olive has had no problem so far with her daily tin of fish. When you get your hound, find out what they have been given each day, and either continue with the same food, or gradually introduce something else to them slowly until you have them on the diet you prefer. Make any changes gradually or they may end up with an upset tummy. Two smaller meals each day is better than one big one, to avoid the risk of bloat. An elevated food bowl is also thought to help with this. Avoid feeding them an hour before or after eating to avoid bloat as well. I did a video called ‘food for a shiny coat’, and you might find that helpful. Oh, and if you are going to give them bones, avoid any weight bearing bones like leg bones - too hard on the teeth. It’s better to go for necks, wings, tail, etc. raw, of course.
      I’m more than happy to answer any questions you might have 😊 I hope this has helped!
      Natalie 😁

      you read my mind Nat! I was about to ask how often of the meal 😂
      Ok, so bone (i suppose that is their treat and not all the time?) is ok but need to be raw and small?
      Type of diet can be tricky hey, i dont mind to spend but more worry if certain diet should be a no no for hound. Also any specific types of nutrition that hound need more?

      Good on you for adopting a rescued pup! I don’t have any experience with greyhound puppies, they’re a pretty rare find, as mostly they are adopted out as retired fully grown racers. You might not know until your pup is fully grown. Whippets tend to have slightly shorter, snubbed noses than greyhounds, and they are smaller. Perhaps your pup may even be a mix? Either way, I’m sure she will be a beautiful dog and a great companion ❤️
