  • Everything is falling apart at the shop. Chin's squarebody is using coolant like it's going out of style and my 1971 Ford puked transmission fluid all over the floor. So lets get these daily drivers back into fighting shape! Chin would probably sell his C10 for $127,500 and I'd let the F100 go for $12,500. As always, thanks for watching!

the round extension on the bottom of the old filter with the rubber grommet needs to go back into the new filter for sucking up out of lower part of the pan otherwise you can run it dry as the fluid level gets lower

I used to work at a trans shop in the early 2000s, a few things that may help you in the future, i used a plastic drain pan called a “big mouth” it helped ALOT . Tranny fluid all over the floor gets old quick. Also on the Fords for many years the filters were in fact old metal ones similar to a VW oil filter. For many years Ford built different versions of filters for same transmissions. Usually being a 4x4 it was deeper due to a deeper pan. Many times vehicles would come in the shop with deep pans and shallow filters which led to burned up trans due to low fluid levels or constant over filling trying to get shallow sump to pick up fluid. We also installed many drain plugs, at that time B&M made a kit that was awesome!. Literally find your spot, step drill bit, clean the pan, install and boom service ready! Thank you for the content very cool.

I remember the first one I saw doing a transmission service at my gm dealership, 19 and fresh out of tech school. Asked one of the grizzled techs what to do and where it fell out of? He told me " you know where this goes?....right here!!!" And at that, he threw it as hard as he could into the weeds behind the shop. I stood there flabbergasted. He said it kept the new transmissions clean down the assembly line, and it simply dropped into the pan when the dipstick was pushed in.

Hey Mortske & Duff. Great video this week. Lots of variety. Got lucky on that small block Chevy. Here in 115 degree Az when you see coolant in a cylinder or in the oil it's a cracked head or block. Got a kick out of seeing the old filler tube factory plug in the Ford's tranny pan. I've probably seen hundreds of them since I started mechanicing at age 14 in the 60's. Seeing one in 2022 in a vintage old tranny means you got your money's worth out of the pan gasket. Think you will see stuff made today 50 years from now in someone's shop doing a will it start video? Doubtful. Does seeing mower man mean there will be an early spring in North Dakota? That's a cool 56 Chevy. Not to crazy so it can be street driven and AC to boot. Gas here in Mesa Az is over 4 bucks a gallon. My 55 Chevy has a near 500 horse 454 BBC in it and Muncie 4 speed. It loves gas stations. Until next time.

I would take a M22 over a T 10 the M22's are the heavy duty trans they call the "Rock Crusher" the M21 and 22 have the close gear ratio but the M21 is standard duty and the M20 has the wide gear ratio but the M20,21 and 22 are far more superior then the T10 in my opinion that is why all the vettes with the 427's and the LS6 Chevelle had the Muncie trans and not the T10

You're right about the plug. It's stuck in the end of the dipstick tube from the factory. First person to change the filter finds it and tosses it. Not changing your filter is like not changing the oil filter when you change the oil in the engine. By the way it's easier on you if you use a pump and a tube in the dipstick tube and pump the fluid out. Dropping the pan is easy after that. I also put a pint of fluid conditioner in the pan prior to putting the pan back on since the torque converter has old fluid in it. That stuff is thick so easier that way than trying to pour down the fill tube. That C6 was a great transmission for Ford for years.

Back in the 70's when I worked at a service station, we used an awl to poke a small hole in the bottom rear corner, threaded the hole 1/4 28 and when we reassembled it we installed a grease zerk plug. way better than taking a bath. Using the awl it rolled the metal in and provided more material to be threaded.

If people would read the little books in their glove box, most auto tranny's should be serviced with a complete fluid and filter change some where around 40k-70k. Not doing this is a tranny rebuilder's dream come true. I change my tranny's fluid and filters every 50k and they are still going @ 250k!!!!!! A tranny should last 500k easy if a person comes to a complete stop when shifting from reverse to drive, or vicea-versa and service their tranny regularly. Keep up the great video's so i can learn something as i'm working in my shop!!!!!

The plastic plug lookin thing in the C6 pan is a plug used in production to keep out contaminants before installation in the truck. The guys on the production line would pop the transmission dipstick tube in there, displacing aforementioned plastic plug and dropping it harmlessly into the pan. Chances are, no one’s dropped that C6 pan before, or if they did, they just put that plug back in

    • @markcole6475

I keep those plugs for future trans installations ….especially when you can’t install the dipstick tube until the trans is in….

Love seeing the projects. I got myself a small harbor freight hand pump. It works really good to stick the hose down the tranny dipstick tube and hand pump the pan empty. Makes it a lot cleaner getting the pan off. I manage to always spill half of it. Always look forward to the next 1!

Fun hanging out with you. The inlet heater hose on that Ford is supposed to route through the clip that holds it against the choke. It helps warm the choke so that it unloads quicker and doesn't re-engage when it isn't needed. If you watch a few of my cold start videos you will see that carbed vehicles start and stay running IF THE CHOKE IS ADJUSTED THE WAY THE FACTORY SPELLS OUT IN MANY DIFFERENT SERVICE MANUALS. Sorry to shout but that adjusting it by hand ain't gonna work. You can do it! PS, the starting only when you let off the key is because that old wiring isn't supplying enough voltage to fire off the Duraspark while the starter is engaged. Notice how it started working when you boosted it? A relay near it will solve the problem.

I had a 351c i bought as a temporary replacement while I rebuilt the 351c I wanted to use... anyway, it wouldn't stay running by itself when cold. Once it dropped a valve and ruined #1 cylinder, I figured out why... it had two slightly burnt valves. Not saying that is the case with your engine, but it was the case with mine.
