Roland TR-8 : Song mode

  • There is a word going around about the TR-8 having a song mode....
    In my video "Hidden features of the TR-8" I talk about a lot of hidden features of the TR-8 and nowhere do I come close to talking about a song mode. Since it came out, Roland released a couple of firmware updates. And maybe it came up at a certain point?
    The question about it came to me from a TH-cam subscriber asking : "I hear there is now a song mode !? can you demo this for us ?"
    I have never looked into this topic before, so I started mining the internet for the info and finally got some info and did some test to come to a conclusion.
    Check my video for the results of my research.

    I hate this cop-out ''performance tool'' bullshit. I mean it's a drum machine; the sole purpose of the device is to program drums on it. The odds are since you are using a drum machine in the first place that you would like to free up your hands to do other things in a live performance and not monitor every single drum change.. and guess what?.. The tr6s and 8s can't do it either, but a sequencer can. So I looked it up, and what did I find? A decent sequencer like the Squarp Pyramid costs around 700euroes- just to chain patterns into a single song which is easily done on any music production program in under a minute! Of course, I'll get it but can't help but wonder what limitations will I find on it once I get it.

      Shouldnt have to drop more money on an external device to sequence a £600 tr8s for this basic task. Infuriating

    Just baffling why roland wouldnt include a simple song mode. Has no consequence for the machine being a performance tool, just adds something really useful at 0 cost to the processing power. If my tr707 could do it in the 80s how and why would they not include it in this in 2022. The mc101 has a great scene mode which is so easy to use, they could have easily implemented something similar in the tr8s. I really don't see why they still can't by updating the firmware..

    Is this still true? No song mode on the TR-8? I am about to dissect it, starting this week.

      Still no song mode and it will stay like this. Roland looks at the TR-8 and TR -8s has performance drum machine.

    Hi Nu-Trix... Here's Alessio from My Escort, Italy...
    First of all sorry for my bad english...
    Second thing... I use Roland TR-8 to accompany my side project trio.
    I play piano & sing, there is a bass player and a guitar player.. So, the TR-8 is my drum.
    The problem is that there are only 16 (A&B) patterns, that for me means that usually when I'm playing a song with the band I use the pattern 1 for a song ("Dancing on my own", for example).
    So, unless I use the same pattern for 2 different songs, I could say that with TR-8 I can play max 16 different songs (or 32 if I have never a variation... But I would like to have more than 1 variation per song... And to be honest I would like to have more than 2 or 3 or more variations per song) per live.
    The question is this: is there a way to record more than 16 patterns on this drum machine, or a way to copy somewhere some new pattern and recall it live (obviously without buying another drum machine!!!)?

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Escort , as you pointed out. 16 memories of A&B can be stored at one time in the TR-8. The only way I can imagine to play more songs live would be to have a sequencer send notes to the TR-8 and use the TR-8 as a sound module.

      Nu-Trix The Synth Guy tnx for the answer...
      I'll try to learn how to use a sequencer so... Or I will find a real drummer... But you know... Sometimes, having something like TR-8 that do exactly what you want is better than to have a real great drummer to convince to play a simple pattern!

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don’t need all the knobs of the TR-8, the TR-08 has only the sounds of the TR-808 but a lot more pattern memories and even 12 songs memories.

      @myescort2800 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nu-Trix The Synth Guy I possess a Tr-8 since a couple of years...

    • @myescort2800
      @myescort2800 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And... to be honest I found in your video that TR-08 is a little complex... The impression is that the machine is less user-friendly...
      Probably during a live-gig it will be not so easy (the TR-8 is really user friendly) to play piano/voice using at the same time a TR-08... Or maybe it's just an impression..
      I found interesting the idea to combine an SH-01a to TR-8, using it like a sound module... It will probably be my next purchase...

    This mode is also active on the tr-06 of the boutique series right? Maybe i hope without external sequecer even if i have a beatestep pro .. Are there any famous drum machine or synths that use this song mode ? Thank you !

      +Toaly McBadgerson, yes it à new feature in the firmware 1.50 for using the TR-8 with a Roland SP Sampler. It’s use to remotely from the TR-8 to change sample banks of the SP.

      Thank you for the video. I wish i haf seen this before purchasing. In my mind that is what a drum machine is supppesed to do, create songs. Perhaps i can figure out a way to this with my Tascam 32d recorder or perhaps load it into midi and edit the paterns there?

      @@EccentricMusicianCompanyOxford this machine is intended to play with, not just programm, set and forget....having faders with every instrument, effects and scatter make it really very cool performer, you simply play entire song all along with the machine as you would play music on stage, and record it

    Hi, thks for yr video, very interesting. I’m planning to buy a tr8’s, could you show how to connect to a daw, in the way that the sequencer drives the tr8s, ex: logic playing a song like master and tr8s as slave. Logic or cubase or ableton, should in the meantime be connected to an audio interface too, don’t know if this is possible..

    In that case this and the TR-8S are equally useless - if it doesnt have a song/track write mode like the TR909/707/606/505/626, 09 then it's useless.

    Hi man... Another thing that's making me crazy with the TR-8: drum kit variation...
    Now... TR-8 come with a couple of drum kits on step 1 and 2.
    In theory I should be able to use the other 14 steps for save my variations and, always in theory, if I'm tryng to make some variations (for example on the step 3) TR-8 should automatically save it...
    Well, my problem is that if I try to create my personal drum kit on the step 3, TR-8 automatically change the drum kit on the step 1...
    Is there a possibility to have 16 different drum kits or am I bound forever to only 2 kits per live-gig?

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The TR-8 has 2 modes for storing memories patterns and kits. In one mode each pattern also saves the kit with it. In that mode, you can change the pattern while keeping the same kit. Or playing a pattern while changing kits. You are probably in the mode where the kit is saved with the pattern. Just a guess.

    • @myescort2800
      @myescort2800 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, TNX...
      I just discovered now the "lock" mode...
      So now I can store my own variations in the various drum kit...
      The only sad thing is that I can't assign to a specific pattern a specific drum kit.
      For example... If I use drum kit 1, all my patterns will be affected by that drum kit.
      And, another sad thing is that the TR-8 can save all the variations but the effects.
      So if I choose one effect setting, it will affect all my drum kits...
      Roland made a lot of mistakes with this machine, that's for sure...
      Better don't talk about the patterns.... How could it be possible that Roland didn't think to save more pattern by an SD card or something like that?..... Incredible

    • @Nu-trix
      @Nu-trix  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the effects, there is also a mode for them to be saved with the pattern memories or not.

    • @myescort2800
      @myescort2800 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will try to search the internet for that...
      If you know a link or something you'll be really kind to let me know it...

      @Nu-trix  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Turn on the tr-8 while holding “ptn select” to get into the parameter mode. If the “kit” button is lit, the effects is saved with the kit. Is the “kit” button is not lit then every kits uses the active effects.
