Very comprehensive tutorial. Why on earth have the guys at Roland made such mistake on not just implementing this out of the box? People tend to say Elektron has strange menu's, Roland succeeded in being probably the most idiotic menu-diving company ever.
There is a quicker way to reset Reverb Send and Delay Send per instrument. Just hold the BD/SD/LT... button and turn the Reverb or Delay Level knobs at the top. No menu diving!
This comment applies to your whole series: THANK YOU! I have been systematically watching these and they truly have helped me feel like I have a handle on this beast; fantastic job! One question about THIS video: By clearing all the variations, doesn't that in fact clear the pattern? In other words, is what you are doing to clear the pattern (holding PTN SELECT + CLEAR + all steps) doing something different than clearing all variations? Thanks!
Yes that is right, when you clear the pattern it actually clears all the variations within this pattern. So you don't have to clear the variations after you cleared the pattern. I should have mention this.
Are you freaking kidding me? There's not use a "New Project" menu choice? Instead we have to go through ten minutes of erasing and clearing ...? ***UPDATE*** Here's an easier way: - Go to Utility - Turn the dial to "Initialize." - Initialize the pattern. - Next Initialize the kit to get the default 808 kit.
The reason to do this is to not have the settings loaded in with the 808 default kit. The default kit has a lot of settings already tweaked that I don't want, Reverb and delay sends etc. I have a couple different INIT kits I have made as starting points. I have a BLANK Blank which is basically everything I can set to 0 or blank for as clean a slate as I can get. Then I have a couple INIT kits where I have typical settings I like to start from for building a kit. Whenever I want to build a new kit I start from one of the INIT kits and then write that to a new location and tweak from there. I found it to be the quickest way to build kits for what I do. When I want to create a completely new type of Kit for a different style of music I build it off the Blank Blank so there are not any hidden settings I may have forgot I had set up in one of the other INIT patches.
Pretty crazy that it takes this amount of work just to get a blank slate to write your own pattern. Its like they focused so much on the presets that they forgot the main reason we bought this machine is to compose OUR OWN music lol. They need a quick delete and new pattern function!
Dude... I know I'm sounding like a broken record, here, but another great video! Very helpful! And, having to do this begs the question: Why, oh why, did Roland not have an option in the menu for "create a blank template..." Anyway, thanks again! You and Unit E are the two guys I go to when I need to figure something out on this machine. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for your positive feedback :) I absolutely agree... A option to just create a blank template would improve the workflow so much. Maybe the next time... TR-9S ;)
Question for you! In this video, you are creating a "blank" pattern and a "blank" kit. I want to make a "blank" pattern and use one of the existing classic kits that come with the machine (such as the 808, 909, 707, etc), but I notice that each of the insturments in each of these kits strangely comes default with unique parameters for gain, panning, reverb and delay sends. Were these parameters in place on the original 808, 909, 707, etc drum machine insturments?? I'm guessing not, so I don't understand why the TR-8S came factory default like this. Should I be adjusting the parameters of each insturment to more neutral positions (change gain to "0.0 dB", panning to "CENTER", and reverb & delay sends to "0") or should I leave them the way they came with the machine for the most "authentic" sound? I am looking to have something that sounds as close to the original classic drum machine as possible. Thanks!
thanks so much! this is such an helpful tutorial (it shouldnt have to be like this but thats fine) i am a person who always likes a blank slate when starting a track. Wiped my Volca sample clean, the factory samples that come with the SP404sx are trash so I formated that quick, too! and now I can start a fresh kit with no factory patterns on my TR8S thanks again!
Can you not just press SHIFT an CTRL SELECT to manually see all effect and adjust them to 0 instead of pressing every INST after the other? Cheers und Grüße! Nevermind you explained it later in the Video XD
I is not necessary to delete all 16 PTN. You can if you want to but you could also clear one PTN and copy this PTN into your next 15... so you have 16 fresh ones.
Thanks and congratulations for all your videos! I think I watched all about TR-8s, but I don't remember what for about the numbers (1, 2-, 4, "5 N")... Are they there to mark the middle of the measure? 🙂
I have one. I also had a 606 and 707 in the 80s, both insanely easy to use and barely needed a manual. I know this is hugely more powerful but the clutter they pack into this machine (they'd call it 'bloatware' on other devices) is INSANE. The amount of preset rhythms is so off-putting. And frankly this video didn't make me feel much better - no diss on the maker. I mean how hard can they make it to just WRITE YOUR OWN DRUM TRACK???
Once deleted all Patterns, then you delete also the Variations. But every Pattern has its Variations and you delete just ONE set of Variations. Should you delete also the other Variations linled to the other Patterns? I am missing something?
No I think you don't miss something :) I just deleted the variations extra because I wanted to make 100% sure. When I delete the ptn than the variations should be deleted as well... But according to my experience for some reason sometimes not. Maybe because of the update. Not sure yet. Cheers
WTF! This is crazy. Just got the TR8S and this honestly makes me what to return it. No offense to your video but this is a dig at Roland for not giving us a way to start it as a blank slate. Really crazy!
but i think you have forgoten to delete the motions !? And how can i delete a motion only at one parameter. i mean not the whole track but at one poti ? thank you very much !!!
Nice technique but a bit tedious. I prefer using one of the dozen empty slots located from pattern 6-03 and above and create my patterns from scratch there. If I don't want to scroll that much to locate it I can just copy it and overwrite one of the first factory patterns.
Can you create empty pattern like in your video on position 8-1 and then do copy and paste it to 1-0, 1-1 etc. To clear Rolands paterns so you do not have to dial all over to 8-01 everytime you turn the machine. This is so crazy bad, I hate it so much you cant initiate or delete all rolands presets.
This machine is very good but they made some really nonsense Decision onde some stuff. One More óbvios is the fadders not aliygn wither buttons bellow....
Ja das ist der Plan. Mir gehen zwar so langsam die Ideen aus aber in Planung ist: Mehr Live Jams, mehr von How to make a Song, Mehr Basslines auf dem TR-8S usw :) Ideen sind immer willkommen.

What a completely insane procedure. Roland !!?
Haha... Yeah
That ridiculous. This is very helpful though.
This is actually really helpful! great for beginners like me to get to know the device and create everything from scratch.

You should have much more views, your tutorials are a must watch if you’ve got a TR-8S
Just discover your channel. I'm learning a lot. THANK YOU.
Is there a list of the different kits/instruments and patterns?

Yes, kind of long I agree. There should be a workaround like a knob you mentioned especially for the kit.

not only tha, just let us copy paste with the editor and its all good. doing it on the machine is so idiotic

Thanks a lot :)

Brilliant ... thank you very much . ♥
Glad you like it!
The TR-8s software editor should speed this process up significantly.
Vielen Dank für deine Videos.
Die helfen mir eeeeeeeeeeenorm viel :)
Bro how i can delete the LFO of the kick ?!?! because i put it in 0 but still is working !! is anoying and i cant find a way to do it. Thanks
The TR-8 already has over 80 blank kits. On my machine they start at kit 119.
Yes, that is true. I should have mention this.
Would it be necessary to delete all 16 Patterns in a Bank as suggested in your first step to clear everything?
I is not necessary to delete all 16 PTN. You can if you want to but you could also clear one PTN and copy this PTN into your next 15... so you have 16 fresh ones.

I saw in another video you can press utility -> choose Utility and delete pattern and Kit with one Click each ;)
Hello. How do you delete a whole kit? I want to import some new kits, but my TR-8S has "no space"
I have one. I also had a 606 and 707 in the 80s, both insanely easy to use and barely needed a manual. I know this is hugely more powerful but the clutter they pack into this machine (they'd call it 'bloatware' on other devices) is INSANE. The amount of preset rhythms is so off-putting. Cool vid but do you really want to make your attack on instruments all the up to 255?
Hey, thanks for the info. This is a mistake. Attack to 0 would be better. Cheers
Did I receive a used tr8s because all my kits are full except for kit #128.
Probably not, you can always reset your tr8s or clear it out manually
@@choppedstrandaudio4561 if I do a factory reset will it still be version 3.0 or will it be back to like 1.0?
How do I delete recorded effects?
Awesome video! Maybe you could make available your “clean kit” for download? ;-)
Vielen Dank. Warum ist das ab Werk nicht so? Komisch...
Kann ich das komplett leere Kit auch kopieren und wieder in ein anderes Kit einfügen?
Grüße
This is way too much work, all this should be done with a press of a button. What was Roland thinking?
thank you
WTF! This is crazy. Just got the TR8S and this honestly makes me what to return it. No offense to your video but this is a dig at Roland for not giving us a way to start it as a blank slate. Really crazy!

So how come Roland only gives you 8 banks and no quick bank delete function so you can write your own patterns?
Well, not sure why. The deleting only takes place once... just copy and paste. This is how you could approach it.
Can you create empty pattern like in your video on position 8-1 and then do copy and paste it to 1-0, 1-1 etc. To clear Rolands paterns so you do not have to dial all over to 8-01 everytime you turn the machine. The Tr8 is so much easier to clear. Why not make it the same?
