- This painting tutorial shows how to paint realistic ocean waves in oils.
Please note: any paintings created using my tutorials are not viable to sell. This is a copyright issue.
This original seascape painting "Dances With Waves", oils on 36x36 inches @FredrixCanvas is in a private collection now.
For inspiration and reference I used my friend's (Mechelle Adelle) photo of a cloudy morning in Florida, but didn't stick to it, I simplified it and added a painterly touch.
Here I offer an insight into my technique and hope that all my artist-friends will find it useful or at least entertaining. You're most welcome to try out some techniques I taught myself over the years.
I used only 4 colors to create this cloudy ocean waves painting: Ultramarine blue, Viridian, Burnt Sienna and Alizarin Crimson (and of course Titanium White). I also used Liquin as a medium.
I really love and recommend brushes from my favorite supplier Princetonbrush.com : several sizes filbert brushes from Aspen series, #9 Catalyst angle bright, 1/2" oval mop from Velvetouch series and 3" wide angle brush from Aspen series.
This painting took me 2 sessions x 4 hours and I let it dry completely in between them.

You're most welcome, any task is doable if you break it down in to smaller tasks: like here layer by layer, at first wet on wet, then adding the highlights when it dries

Living down here in the Caribbean i took up the sport of Scuba diving, and each and every time i went down i am always amazed at the beauty of the marine life, with its coral's and vibrant colors. What we see on the surface is just part of that beauty down under. Therefore I can only appreciate how you bring out this beautiful splendor in your art. I do have but one question: What oils are you using, Williamsburg, Old Holland, etc. Thanks for the video.
I completely agree with you on it, there’s a whole new world underwater. You’re so lucky to live in such a beautiful place! I mostly use Winsor and Newton and Gamblin oil paints

Many thanks for this video. I too love to paint water. This video is a great tutorial for identifying all the values, shadows and reflections.
Can I use these techniques on a wood panel i.e a shellac surface instead of a gesso based surface for realism as it allows us to subtract colors as well ??

Love this Eva! Do you just paint oils without mixing in any mediums? That side of it always stumps me. Plus when you swap colours, what would you clean the brush with? This is prob the main reason I stick with acrylics!

Just clean it with a rag or paper towel

I enjoyed this as I have the others. The only thing that bugged me was the center of interest was smack dab in the center of the canvas , otherwise well done!
Thank you, in my opinion the center of interest is not one point here but the whole middle of the canvas. This painting is hanging in my dining room now and I’m enjoying it a lot.
