      Thank you! I enjoyed this day of driving more than any other of this trip. I loved watching the elevations constantly increase while I was driving across the Plains, and then getting to see Pikes Peak from so far away was awesome (I didn't even know how big Pikes Peak was at the time of this drive, so when I first saw it about 100 miles east, I just thought it was a small mountain)!

    • @MikesVoyagesAndDrives
      @MikesVoyagesAndDrives ปีที่แล้ว

      @@unclecoolie Yeah, that's huge. We also have high mountains here in Switzerland. But there are the peaks at altitude, where there is a huge plateau here, a cultural landscape with roads, towns, fields and forests. The peaks are quite a bit higher. And of course the dimensions are completely different, you can't compare them at all. I've been to Colorado, but unfortunately not to this region. I drove via Denver and then through the valley of the Colorado River to Moab. That was scenically very beautiful, but no comparison to this route.

    Absolutely loved this journey. So much more interesting going on the smaller roads than the Interstates, you get to see some of the small towns on these roads. I seem to remember once saying that I’d like you to do US50 so I’m especially enjoying this road trip, thanks. Greetings from the UK.

    10:52:16 - face full of fumes from a motor in it death throes. Surely that truck cannot be legally allowed on the road like that!
    Enjoying the trip btw, especially as you are taking more of the roads less travelled instead of just interstates. Crossing eastern Colorado heading straight towards Pikes Peak as it grows more prominent was very cool👍

    I started watching your videos 3 years ago when the pandemic hit, and I have really enjoyed them all the way down to the details of time of day, date, elevation, etc.
    I see the latest series shows New York to Santa Monica via Cincinnati, Lee's Summit, MO and Salida, CO. Are you working on the real-time production for the Salida to Santa Monica segment?
    Although, all of your videos are great, I really enjoy the ones in real time the most. Keep these amazing videos coming. An I-40 road trip across TN and further west would be nice.

      Thanks! I'm working on part 4 of the NY-CA trip in real time now: Salida to Kingman, AZ, and I will have it uploaded and posted in the next few days. The part from Kingman to Santa Monica will be uploaded next after that, before doing the real time videos of my drive from San Antonio to Virginia last March. I have another big trip coming up next month (although I haven't narrowed down the details yet), and I'd love to have these other videos uploaded before or soon after so that I can work on that trip's video, which is always a lot of work working on a new trip's video.

    Thanks, Unclecoolie from across the pond. I have seen many similar videos around the world and yours are by far the best. One quick question, if that is OK - do you book the hotels in advance, or do you do it during one of your pit stops?

    • @unclecoolie
      @unclecoolie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Thanks! I book my road trips usually 2-3-4 weeks in advance. I plan the route that I want to take and figure out roughly how far I can drive each day, then I book the hotel rooms accordingly. Almost always I rent the car that I drive for these trips, especially since most of the time when I drive across the country like this trip, I don't drive back to the origin (due to lack of time). I got to do this trip because I had to travel to Las Vegas (where I dropped the rental car off) for work, so I made a road trip out of it. I flew back home to Virginia after. I am also planning another big road trip next month because of another business trip that I'm doing. I haven't worked out the details yet.

    Hi. How do you get the overlays? I've been watching a trucker use the same overlay but slightly different your's seems much cleaner I like the GPS at the bottom left. Nice video and 4k Quality! Earned a Sub!

    • @unclecoolie
      @unclecoolie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I create the overlays separately using Paint/Photoshop. It's tricky getting the overlay over the white route line correctly, and is the most time-consuming overlay that I create. The virb software that the Garmin camera uses is what extracts the GPS data that the camera records, and I can pick which gauges that I want on the video and where on the video they go. I've thought about doing a how-to video later this year. I want to get all of the real time road trip videos that I'm currently editing first. I also have another big trip planned next month.

  • @jtl6713
    @jtl6713 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really nice! What technology do you use to get the telemetry on the video?

    • @unclecoolie
      @unclecoolie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I used the Garmin Virb Ultra 30, which records GPS information, with a 512 GB micro SD card. The Virb software displays the GPS information per my selection, and I use Final Cut Pro for all other editing. I use Paint/Photoshop for all of the graphics, such as the highway signs and the map overlays. The micro SD card is large enough to store 16 hours' worth of UHD video, and I bring my MacBook with an external hard drive to back up the card each night.

      Well, one thing I wished that I had done was drive up Pikes Peak when I passed through Manitou Springs. I had more than an hour's worth of extra daylight when I made it to Salida, so I could've taken that time to drive up to the summit. The next time I'm in that area, I'll be sure to do that. Otherwise, the most spectacular scenery was on the 4th day when I drove through SE Utah and down to the Grand Canyon--no shortage of beauty there. I'll have that video uploaded by the end of this month.
