San Antonio, TX to Herndon, VA: A Complete Road Trip

- This is my drive back to Virginia from Texas. I drive from San Antonio to Austin on March 23; from Austin to Jackson, TN on March, 25; and from Jackson, TN to Herndon on March 26.
This video is presented in 8x time lapse as opposed to the usual 4x time lapse, but at 60 fps instead of the usual 30 fps. It is also presented with music.

The weather was generally good until I got into the West Virginia mountains, where it was snowing, windy, and well-below freezing, before clearing up again by the time I got into Virginia.

In case anyone is wondering, I had planned on staying on US-70 in Oklahoma all the way to Little Rock, Arkansas, but road closure forced me to detour back into Texas. 😊
That's okay, at least we still got to enter Oklahoma.
@@floridaandpuertoricomappin9893 yes. With this trip complete, I have now visited 47 of the lower 48 states (Vermont) is the only one left. I haven't visited Hawaii and Alaska yet, either. One day.
@ur mom This is only the 4th video that I've uploaded with music (my others are DC-WA hyper lapse, east coast hyper lapse, and my German road trip). Trying to find hours' worth of non-copyrighted music that I actually like isn't easy.

@@floridaandpuertoricomappin9893 I'm not sure yet, but I've considered driving across Canada to Vancouver, then up to Alaska from there. When I planned my west coast trip in 2018, I originally wanted to go all the way up to Alaska, but I had to end it in Vancouver due to lack of time off that I had at the time.

I have the money but never the TIME! My favorite trips always cross the US/Canada border, usually to Nova Scotia.
@@toyorobo I'm an IT specialist, and I have a family, which makes doing these difficult. I had to travel to San Antonio and then Austin for work, so I took advantage of it by driving instead of flying. I'm getting ready to do another trip like that in the next couple of weeks.

Thank you! I just finished a road trip that I've wanted to do for years, and I'll keep those tips in mind when editing the video.
Loved the dirt road detour. Back roads are the highlights for these trips. When I do a country drive for fun I often tell Google Maps that I'm walking to trick it into giving me the obscure, usually more beautiful routes. As long as Google doesn't find a walking trail, it normally works great. Love these videos (music muted) and often let them run on a spare screen while I work.
I agree. I had originally planned to stay on US-70 all the way to Little Rock, but my plans got changed. Overall, I enjoyed this trip.

I recently discovered US 48 in WV. It’s got it all-the is speed limit is high, it’s beautiful, and it’s deserted.
I first discovered it in 2019 right before I did my WV road trip then. I agree. The views when coming down the mountains were awesome!

Well well I finally ended watching this road trip video after having been busy studying during this time and I loved it as always, especially the weather change in West Virginia, seeing snowed towns there was great :O. In the next days I'm going to watch road trip video between New York and California, I feel that video will be very interesting. As an Australian I do appreciate the fact that you are using km/h and metres, but am curious as to why when I would assume most viewers would be Americans? I do prefer real-time uploads but you don't seem to have that for this trip. Anyhow I can adjust the playback speed to one quarter pace so its almost at that pace. Keep up the excellent work. Your info/graphics/maps etc. are the best I've come across.

I theorized (correctly, because my viewership statistics shows it) that the real time videos would be viewed by a higher percentage based on such videos that others had posted before I started posting real time videos. About 70% of my viewers of time lapse videos are from outside of the U.S., while it's about 50-50 for the real time videos.

Oh yes, new content! What made you decide to add music this time?
I wanted to break up the monotony some. That's why I also sped up the time lapse from 4x to 8x, and increased the frame rate from 30 to 60, so that the viewer can still see the 4x @ 30fps if they prefer. I am planning another big road trip in a few weeks, and the reactions to this video will help me decide if I want to keep going at 8x or go back to 4x for the time-lapse. I will say that finding more than 3 hours' worth of music that I actually like that wouldn't give me another copyright strike on my channel was very time-consuming.
1:47:00 2°F? I think that’s a bit cold for Tennessee in late March.
That's an error. The left hand side temperature is actually in Celsius, while the right side one is Fahrenheit. I feel really bad for missing such an obvious mistake that consumes the whole 2nd half of the video. The numbers themselves are accurate though.

Cool. I have music on 3 other videos: My Neuschwanstein Castle trip, my Washington-to-Washington in 90 minutes trip, and my east coast hyper lapse trip. I only try to add music on shorter videos. I don't do it for 10-12-hour long videos. It's just too much work.

Can you post the real time version of San Antonio TX to Austin TX, Austin TX to Jackson TN, and Jackson TN to Herndon VA please? it is close to 2025 and same thing you did not post the real time in 2022.
You ought to do a coast to coast trip via the southern route. By the way, why were you going up into Oklahoma to begin with? I look up the route on google maps and it has you taking I-30 in Dallas.
I had planned to take US-70 from Hugo, OK to Little Rock, AR, but the detour made me drive south back into TX briefly. I wanted to drive into OK because I'd never driven in OK before. Now I've driven in 47 of 48 continental US states (VT is the only state I haven't driven in yet).

I checked into my hotel near the end of this video (the Hyatt Riverwalk) and then had a couple of beers at the lounge before cleaning up and going to bed. I had to go to San Antonio for work, and I also went to Austin for work. While my coworkers flew in, I decided to drive it. I will be doing another long road trip at the end of this month.

I am planning a coast-to-coast trip next week. I would love to do that trip that you're suggesting, but I can't right now. When I planned my west coast road trip, I originally wanted to go up to Alaska but had to end it in Vancouver due to lack of time.
@@unclecoolie Yeah it’s definitely tough especially in this day and age to stop everything you’re doing and just go on a road trip. I’m planning one on the trans labrador highway in Canada next year and it’s one thing to just drive, but document all of it and edit all of it is extremely impressive.

I'm about ready to upload that in the next week, and then I'll upload the real time versions of this trip and that new one. I've already started day 1 of this trip, so it should only be a couple of weeks after my new trip video is uploaded until I get day 1 of this trip uploaded. That's why the delay.

This is a really cool video! I was just wondering how you calculated the elevation, time, and etc for every precise location you were at? Do you have a photographic memory? Lol
Thank you! The camera (Garmin Virb Ultra 30) records GPS information, including elevation. I add the temperatures manually because I can't get the camera's sensor to work in the car. I just write down what the car's dash shows, about every 15-30 minutes.
