    I was 10 years old and my parents took me to see this. There's nothing like sitting in a theatre in the 80s

    I’m so glad to see Amelia again, especially reacting to such a beloved movie! 😊 While most fans of this movie know and recognize Drew Barrymore as Elliot’s little sister, not many people recognize the little girl that Elliot kissed in class among the frogs… She was a very young Erika Eleniak - known later for her roll as Shauni in Baywatch, also co-starred alongside Steven Seagal as “Jordan” in Under Siege (1992), and also Playboy Miss July 1989!

    The first movie I ever saw at the cinema. My Mum took me to the Odeon, Watford (Just outside London) at 6 years old in 1982. Never forget it 😊

    I had the good fortune of living about a block from a drive-in movie theater in 1982. When the movie first came out, I thought that E.T. would be some kind of monster. I must have seen this movie a half a dozen times for free. At the end of the movie I remember a little girl in her Daddy's arms saying "Bye, bye, ET! Bye, bye ET!"
    BTW, Henry Thomas, the actor who portrayed Elliott was born on September 9, 1971. As of now, he is 52 years old.

    This is where Drew Barrymore became famous.
    Her acting ability was hereditary, though, coming from an acting family. Several of her ancestors were well known. I remember Lionel and Ethel, but I'm quite sure there's at least one more.

      John Barrymore was the third famous Barrymore sibling, though the family's acting tradition went back a couple generations before them, starting in live theatre. Drew Barrymore is named after both of the theatrical families who were united by the marriage of her great grandparents (the Drews and the Barrymores).

    I was 11 when this came out in '82. My first time seeing it was at a drive-in theater; it was so much more magical and special watching this under the stars than watching it at an indoor theater. One of my favorite childhood memories.

    In the book, M&Ms were used, but Mars did not want to pay for product placement. Therefore, Reeces Pieces were used in the film.

    There were several actors, as well as animatronics operators, that help bring E.T. to life. One person made use of her hands to play E.T.'s hands. For walking scenes, a boy with no legs was used.

    We used to ride our bikes like that every day back in the late 70s/early 80s. Lol. You should have seen the ramp me and my best friend built at the end of my neighbor's basketball court. No way that'd fly today. 🤣 🤣

    Rumor is that Spielberg really didn’t do much on poltergeist because he was filming this movie at the same time.

    • @halfvader8015
      @halfvader8015 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Completely untrue.There are a lot more rumours that are actually true, that Spielberg basically directed Poltergeist. He couldn't get a directing credit though because of union rules concerning writers directors and multiple films. So Hooper got the directing credit. He got the writing. And yep I do know it for fact, not just speculation. Hooper was a coke fiend at the time. And have you seen Poltergeist? Look at the shots, the blocking, I mean it's pretty blatant!

    • @LukeStarkilla
      @LukeStarkilla 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Speilberg would ride his bmx between the sets of ET and Poltergeist! He basically made 2 films that year just like in '93 Jurassic park and Schindler's list!

    Released on Friday, June 11th, 1982; so school was out. I probably saw this a few weeks later at a matinee. Half-price Wednesdays I think it was. Anyway, glad I went alone because the shot of E.T. in the riverbed, ugh ... gut punch to 16-year-old me.

    Originally, those were supposed to be M&Ms, but the candy producer didn't want to be associated with a monster movie.....so they passed on the opportunity. So Reeces Pieces said they'd do it ,and iif you remember that's when the began to crack into the market..

    It's kinda funny to hear you say that you have to be a pretty talented biker to pull off those stunts. Back in the 80's, the kids, me included, spent so much time on our bikes that those "stunts" as you call them were really easy to do and we did that kind of stuff all the time. Most of us also fixed our own bikes. The real stunts began when we started building our own ramps for jumping things.

    I recommend you read "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial in His Adventure on Earth"
    (Book #1 in the E.T. Series) by William Kotzwinkle. In the book, we can read ET's thoughts, and he's not so chldlike, but more like an intelligent being with curious mind and a weakness for Resse's Pieces.

    This was finally released in the early 90s on video and I wouldn’t buy it because I edited out the iconic scene where the little girl swears

    • @Tr0nzoid
      @Tr0nzoid 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is not accurate at all. First, "the little girl" did not "swear."
      This was first released on videotape in 1988. It was also shown on NBC without commercial interruption and without anything edited out, including profanity. It was a very unusual move.
      Even when it was re-released with the 2002 special edition, people exaggerated the changes made for the 20th anniversary without even seeing it. None of the lines by the kids were removed. Guns were replaced with walkie-talkies, some digital enhancements were made to E.T.'s face, and deleted scenes were included. That's it. Both versions of the movie were released in the first DVD release fall of 2002.

    LOL think you mean - even for today these effects are amazing. you said "even for 1982 , these effects are amazing" i get you were trying convey though, despite the movie being so old it's effects are still incredible. but the way you were saying that ws like saying other movies of 82 were more amazing than this one's. LOL so yeah think you emant for today , by today's standards . and yes , yes they are that good.
    "cars are faster today " damn girl it was the 1980's not the 1930's LOL they had cars in the 80's that could do 250 mph the average cruising speed limit in the 80's was the 60's some states today it's been pushed to 70's but that is not because cars are faster today. it's becasue cars today have more saftey features.

    Well, I found it boring, sappy, and predictable----though I didn’t see it until I was in my jaded 40s, and this film is kiddie fare. Even the great John Williams' soundtrack was cloying. Spielberg had this awesome 10-year run of masterpieces----“Duel,” “Jaws,” “Close Encounters,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (“1941” wasn’t a masterpiece, but it was fun for what it was trying to do-make WWII wacky), then after “Ark,” he leaned into the kiddie realm, directing and/or producing “ET,” “Poltergeist,” “Goonies,” and other fluff, even adding a kid to the “Raiders” sequel. I recall a cranky film reviewer back then, reviewing either “Temple of Doom” or a “Jurassic Park” sequel, who sniped, “Why does there always have to be a kid?” in his films? Why, indeed.
