If Joseph’s father hadn’t made him a coat of many colors, he wouldn’t have been eventually sold and ultimately become the second greatest person in Egypt. Also, they didn’t want to kill him because of the coat but because of the dreams he had and shared with them where the whole family bowed down to him. Dolly’s one of a kind and blessed with infinite talent. I think God honors her loving and giving heart.
Correct- ‘You intended it for evil but God worked it for good.’ One of the greatest lessons about grace- how Joseph treats his brothers later…. packed down & overflowing🥰
Joseph was a spoiled brat!!!!! He even got admonished by Jacob, when he told him his dream about the sun, moon, and the stars bowing down to him. He lorded the fact that Jacob loved him more over them. God allowed Joseph to go through the things he did because he had be humbled before he could use him.

Joseph saved the nation Egypt and his Hebrew kinsmen from starvation. He is one the greatest men in the Old Testament because he is an example of betrayal, severe hardship, and forgiveness with grace.
This is a true story of how Dolly Parton grew up. Her mumma made her a coat of many colors as she came from a family of 12 and they lived in a one bedroom farmhouse. They were very poor, but their was a lot of love in that house. Dollys songs are from personal experiences in her life. That coat of many colors is now in a museum. The coat of many colours is a true story and how the kids made fun of Dolly when she wore it. She told the kids that you are only poor if you choose to be. She felt so rich in the coat her mumma made her. Dolly Parton is a true legend and a national treasure to America. 🇺🇸 Love from little old me in Gisborne New Zealand 🇳🇿
I am looking at a house to buy that was built in 1939!!! If I can get it I will be thrilled because I am tired of living in my vehicle!!! I am 65 and retired and a vet!!!
The coat of many colors was given to Joseph by his father with great love just as Dolly's mother gave her that coat of many colors. Likely, her mother, after telling the story of Joseph's coat said I hope this coat gives you great happiness compared to Joseph's which did bring him much calamity. But as other have said, from the jealousy of his brothers it ends up causing him to eventually find great success and forgiveness for his brothers saving them from starvation.
it comes from the word "breeches." an archaic word for pants. It still in fairly wide use in the south. but you can still hear it (less commonly) nearly everywhere else too.
My mom, a Tennessee girl, said when she was a kid, probably before 1930, they had a little ditty they said, "I smell apples, I smell peaches. Here comes a man with a hole in his britches."
My Mom was from Oklahoma & also referred to pants as britches. Even though I've lived in California all my life, I call them britches sometimes, too. 😂
They filmed Steel Magnolias in August, which meant they were doing Christmas scenes in blazing heat and high humidity. Shirley McClaine remarked in an interview that they were all complaining about the heat like crazy, everyone except Dolly, who was running around in stilettos and a waist cincher, apparently without a drop of sweat. When she asked Dolly how she could not be complaining about the heat, Dolly told her that she had been so blessed in her life that she would not complain about something so trivial as a little heat
I think all she meant was that Joseph was given his coat of many colors because he was SO LOVED. Not referring to what happened later. I loved your rendition of the story!
That's the beginning of Joseph's story... By the end, he was a prince of Egypt and his siblings had to come before him to beg for help as they had a famine.
My Mom loved this song so much. She took scraps from clothes she'd made a made us coats. I thought we were going to be picked on. But it was the opposite. My Mom had other moms asking her to make them for their girls. My Mom politely said no. Britches is a southern word for pants.
Dolly is from Appalachia. The Appalachians were populated by the Scotch Irish who came in droves from North Ireland after fleeing Scotland due to religious persecution. Hence the British word, Breeches, which was pronounced britches by our old country ancestors. Britches = pants
Should look it up in Genesis, Joseph ended up being put in charge second only to the king or head guy. And his family was brought to Egypt to survive the famine of seven years, that is why she said that about Joseph, the story don’t end the way it started.
when Dolly was growing up there were very large family's. usually all the kids got hand-me-downs. so that is one reason the coat was so special for Dolly. Made just for me.
Britches: southern Appalachian word for pants/trousers. Probably an artifact of an older way of speech that held on to the word "breeches" longer than the rest of the US. I used that word growing up. We used to watch Hee Haw and when I was about two I demanded a pair of "Hee Haw britches" (a concept I came up with on my own). Eventually, my grandmother was convinced to sew some patches on the knees of a perfectly good pair of jeans. I loved them 😂 A related term is "leather britches" which does not actually mean clothing but was what we called dried green beans. Grandma threaded green beans onto strong, doubled thread and hung them like garlands to dry to preserve them for the winter. They were called "leather britches" because if you didn't cook them long enough they were as tough to chew as... well... leather britches. Also Appalachian.
Joseph was eventually blessed and became the king’s right hand man, the second most powerful person in the land of Egypt, and he eventually saved his entire family and many others during the famine that followed, so he went through hell, but eventually rose above.
You got many details of Joseph's story wrong. You're right, his father gave Joseph the coat because Joe was his favorite -- son of the wife he loved the most. Joseph had prophetic dreams and told his brothers of a dream where his brothers' sheaves of grain bowed to his. They were already jealous about their father's playing favorites and his dreams aggravated it and they decided to kill him. One brother suggested instead to throw him into a pit; he may have planned to rescue Joe later(?). But they sold him as you said. Joseph did have luck, however -- going from being sold as a slave to the wealthy Potiphar in Egypt to prisoner (another fascinating side story) to advisor for Egypt's Pharaoh. When a famine hit his homeland, Joe's brothers were sent to Egypt because (thanks to Joseph's dreams) Egypt had stored up crops in the years before the famine. Not recognizing Joe, they bowed down to him -- thus fulfilling those dreams. This story explains how the Israelites ended up in Egypt and leads-- generations later -- to Moses and the Exodus story.
Dolly was an amazing song writer. Here in Canada, britches are pants. I was never a big Country music fan but Dolly is the big exception. I loved everything she sang. I heard that she recently created a Rock music album. I hav't heard yet but I am sure it will be amazing. 🥰🇨🇦

Patches on her britches. You questioned that. Dolly as referring to patches her mama sewed on her pants to cover any holes and worn spots. There were 12 children, so lots of hand me down clothing. Many of Dolly's songs are about true events in her life. Growing up her family was poorer than poor. She grew up in an area with very little opportunity so people made do with what they had. Dolly has never forgotten where she came from and gives back to that area. She has a big destination theme park there called Dollywood and it has supplied people with jobs and part of the proceeds go back to help improve the area. Britches as a term is prob. what confused him. "Pants" or even "trousers" is used more often these days in than britches. At least, that's how I took it.
During the Depression, a family member who didn't have much was so happy to have a velvet coat her mother made from the headliner of an old car. A cousin told everyone at school where the velvet came from, i always wondered what the two people thought of this song.
Oh wow! I never heard about Joseph and his coat. I've always heard him referenced in this song, but had no idea about the story with Joseph and his coat. Thank u for that. That was awesome!
If you've ever heard Paul Overstreet's song "Dig Another Well" that is actually a bible story about Isaac. It is not a well known story and the song doesn't paint it as a Bible story. I was floored when I figured that one out. In the song it is Ike instead of Isaac digging the wells.
You see, britches comes from the old English word “breeches” which simply means “trousers.” As we lost our British accent in this country, the long “e” sound morphed into more of a short “i” sound.
It was not a lucky coat, but it was a coat of love because he was Jacob's favorite son. Dolly had 11 siblings, they lived in a 2-room log cabin so I'm sure she felt special wearing that coat her mom made for her.
If Joseph's brothers had accepted the gift their father bestowed upon him maybe they too could experience the beauty of love. The road we choose shows a lot of our true nature. Perhaps the father saw Joseph's beauty and not so much in the others. They passed up a chance to grow.
One of my old favorites. I love how she sings this touching with a smile. You're right about Joseph but I think it was meant to be a Blessing from his father so perhaps the mom meant for a Blessing for Dolly. And as the song goes she was persecuted because of her coat. Just a thought.

Yeah, but Joseph had MUCH good luck years later BECAUSE he was sold to slavers. The Pharaoh put him in charge of the stores of food to feed all of Egypt during the years of feast and famine that eventually reunited him with his family.
There is no such thing as good luck. Joseph went through some trials while in Egypt. He was falsely accused by a woman and was put in prison for two years. But "the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden." (Genesis 39:21)
