Outstanding! An excellent and worthwhile project completed to a superb standard. However, the dog really steals the show and became the star for 😂 me. Seriously though, I think you have done a great job - well done 🎉
@@Xyz-q8p thank you. I’m afraid Flynn the dog is also a menace. I had Robin all ready to sail out the dyke last weekend, sails up, just needed to step in and we were off. I turn around to find Flynn has jumped ship to go chase geese and would not come back… oh dear. 😳
My dad's first boat, when I was a kid in the 80's was a wooden Wayfarer, my annual job was helping to strip and revarnish the deck ... although I often found ways of dodging ! He went on to building a 10m steel sailing boat, which I have been in charge of for many years on the west of Scotland. Wayfarers are perfect ! I do wonder dad's old wayfarer is still being cared for.
@@the_grand_tourer lovely to have a family built boat like that. I got a few hours work out of my children but they too found it a bit boring. Haha. They do like sailing her though
Superb job chaps! I’ve just rescued woodie Wayfarer no 420, and about to get her sorted. I too live in Norfolk. Hoping she ends up looking as good as yours!
Absolutely beautiful boat, and great work! I'm almost finished with my 69 mk1 grp and look forward to that feeling, getting into the wind for the first time.
Great to see. I’m restoring a 1968 Leader and your observations on ‘fun in a strange kind of way’ and cheaper to get a restored one than do it yourself really resonate! 😂 lovely to have these vintage boats back out on the water though
Lovely job! These wooden classics are timeless and the Wayfarer so capable. I have W265, the boat Peter Clutterbuck sailed from Hamble to Norway! Worth looking up his book if you're planning to go beyond the Broads.
I have no interest in boat repair. I have sailed a Wayfarer just once. However I loved every minute of this video. Great stuff. Congrats on an epic project.
I'll never forget working on my Mistral (fiberglass knockoff) 's rudder! I managed to suck my thumb into the roller on my belt sander! A few hours later I was heating up a needle to drill a hole in the nail to relieve the (excrutiating) pressure.
Awhh. That sounds miserable. I can sympathise. On my last boat project I managed to router out my finger. I tried to keep going and nearly fainted which was even more dumb. The finger still feels weird several years later.
You have inspired me a bit. I am part way (too many years it seems) thru restoring a 1960's Tamar Class sailing dinghy of a very similar design. There were hundreds built in Tasmania Aus back in the day as they were cheap and simple to build. Alas many people found them to be a very good power boat , so many ended up at the beach shack to rot. Tasmania is an island with many great sailing areas. At the head of the Tamar river is the city of Launceston where my boat was built. Great sailing estuary in the right conditions. I will be 60 late this year, so better get my finger out and finish.
It's never too late to get a boat finished off. I spent a bit of time when I was younger across the Bass Strait in Melbourne. A lovely corner of the world you have there.
Really liked the video, I have got a similar boat number 459 and its about 2/3 of the way through a full restoration was hoping to get it done this year and then another woody back on the water
Bravo! Looks ace. (Might lift the red /white theme for mine -W651 - once she's out of the recovery ward - 20 years in a Norfolk forest hasn't been kind!)
@@2120edm was either restore or bonfire - the latter would probably have been the better option - reckon about 85% is now new wood 🤔- but, hey, the number has been saved 👍
well done to you, a lovley job you should be proud to have her back on the water. my own attempt ended in failure the hull was just too far gone. the parts however live on in other boats
Great video and an inspiration for my own project due to start next month. Mine will require rebuilding the back 2 foot as it is rotten (although my inspection took place on the wettest August day for years. I may only have to patch in places). I do like a challenge.
Sitting in a museum or traveling from show to show is a boring life for a boat... just one step up from being neglected, rotting away behind a shed... Congrats on saving the old girl! I don't ever think I'll get used to you folks driving on the wrong side of the road I was for sure there was going to be an accident near the end
we drive on the correct side its everyone else (apart from OZ Ireland India Pakistan New Zealand Japan Singapore Thailand et al) who is wrong. And of course some countries specialise in driving in the centre of the road. lol
Next time you get a water soaked boat try Cirrus Systems stripper, it is water based and just washes off with a hose taking paint and varnish with it, saves hours of work. I have no connection with the company other than having used it's products, The least impressive thing about the product is the realization of the time and money wasted stripping coatings in the past, quite sickening really. Nice job by the way great to see the old girl saved to race another day.
