- In 2008 the fishing vessel Fremad II(1888) was listed by The Directorate for Cultural Heritage. In 2016 the ship was put on our slipway, and it soon became clear that it would be a more comprehensive restoration that the preliminary condition report had estimated. On friday the ship was launched! We’ve made a compilation of all the videos from the restoration of Fremad here:

MK Fremad II (1888) fekk vernestatus av Riksantikvaren i 2008. I 2016 kom den på slipp hjå oss, etter at rigg, styrehus, maskin og dekks-installasjonar vart sette på land. Det viste seg fort at rehabiliteringa ville bli mykje meir omfattande enn kva ein førebels synfaringsrapport frå 2008 rekna med. På fredag var det sjøsetting, og no ligg Fremad II igjen på sjøen. Her har me samla alle videoane frå restaureringa av Fremad II:
Video: Silje Ensby / Hardanger fartøyvernsenter
Launch footage: Kristian Wolski, Mads Dragsund, Kolbjørn Ask, Lars A. Oma.
I am a master mariner, gaining my certificate in Hong Kong in 1970 with the Hong Kong harbour authorities in a very stiff series of written, practical & verbal tests. All my father's side of my family have been mariners from at least my G G Grandfather. To me, shipwrights are the top of the tree where joinery is concerned. To watch these young guys, masters of their trade utilize it & produce this picture of perfection still has me in awe even now @ 73 years of age. I salute each & every one of you, BRAVO she is beautiful a credit to you all. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Makes you really appreciate the skills and efforts of the original builders, who operated with only hand tools. Even with modern power tools it's brilliant work.
Exactly. Where do you even begin on the scale like that. It’s like building a Hoover Dam with only a shovel and a bucket. 🙂

Really impressive that you were able to complete your master mariners certificate at such a young age. In 1970 I was 21 (four years older) and didn't know shit from putty.
Building a construction that is curved in all planes is a whole other ball game than house construction. You really have to be Sharp and focused. Great job and heritage preservation! Western Norway sits on a unbroken chain of craftmanship of wooden boat building, handed down from shipsmith to apprentice over at least 1500 years.
Marvelous craftsmanship. I could watch this all day!
Iv repaired one ,not built from scratch , it was ex sunken in Nottingham while in borstall

This is absolutely mind boggling. The fact that the original plan came out of someone’s mind and the builders had no where near the modern tools that these folks had. The men that restored this had pieces to mimic but that doesn’t take anything away from their skill set! They were phenomenal!
What a great watch!
And that's all about one single boat but what about the galleon or the full fleet of the Spain or the England?
Marvellous way of looking at our ancestors brilliancy. Think about old generations, they didn't have any machineries to help their hard works those days.
Absolutely wonderful. Very heartening seeing young men that have learnt and are carrying on the heritage traditions. This video is particularly good because it shows the many techniques of wooden boat building in this one short film. It’s one of the best I’ve seen for that.

@@onnon98funny thing is that any shipwright could build
a house, but not any old carpenter could build a ship
I have doubts about the correctness of using mechanical saws instead of axes. Because the processing with an axe closes the fibers in the bar, which prevents the bar from gaining water
...and imagine watching the original builders😱
This is what the internet should be for. It's incredible to see how these young guys work with wood. This video has many views.
Unbelievable! Absolutely magnificent! Now can you imagine building ships centuries ago with the tools and materials they used! Just staggers to think how much we have regressed! The skill, love, and hard work put in here is just sensational. What a beautiful Lady you created!
They probably had hundreds of workers to build these legendary sailing ships. And just imagine a 3-deck Man o' War. And Britain had dozens...
I might watch it over and over and over...again. I did. Great work Gentlemen!
cant imagine what it was like in the days of the tall ships. the nitrate haulers..the p class ships .. without power tools. Building warships and utility vessels during that time had to have taken forever. beautiful craftsmanship
It's true, but then again it still takes a long time to make contemporary warships!
There were hundreds of men working together. Not just 5 dudes
all the old buildings in the world cannot possibly be built without technology..nor these great ships. hidden history....tartarian tech.

I keep thinking it must be amazing to work in that building as well, natural light, the mountains in the background. You guys are real craftsman.
My parents built a 42' live aboard seiner in the 1950's . She still floats in Moro Bay California. Seeing this vessel being constructed matches all the stories I heard down to pounding in the oakem between the boards. Shipright work is what this is . What an honor to see. Good on all of you !
I’m in love with the braced wedging used to guide these brilliant forms into alignment. This is truly one of my favorite videos ever
Masters of your craft. Hard, painstaking work. Your efforts and love for it made evident. Beautiful results! God bless you all.

I want a job! This is absolutely amazing and I'd love to be a part of just one build! Can you imagine the skill and craftsmanship they had when this was all done by hand with no power tools at all! Just amazing 👏🏽 Great job to you all! 👏🏽 🎉🎉
Great video. Without Voice over and stubid music. Fantastic.👍
I could watch these guys work for hours. Amazing.
You have done a very good job, in building that Trawler. You all have been working very hard to get that far. Well done to the whole Team, that worked very hard, and also very tough, and in the end it all paid off. 🇿🇦👏👌👍

Maybe in my next life. Wonderful work.
What a beautiful wooden ship. Such craftsmanship. I never knew there was so much that went into building such a vessel. Nice work.
Master craftsmen, wow 😮
Maravilha de restauração. Todos vocês são excelentes artistas. 👏👏👏👏👏
This is the second time viewed this video, nor shall it be the last either. I could watch it many times over and still marvel at the builders dedication to craftsmanship.
Fantastic ! Thank you for sharing
I always stand back in amazement when these techniques are used. ‘Steaming etc’.
What is even more amazing is the guys that built the original boats with nothing more than hand tools. An adze for the shaping. A pit saw for planking. A couple of mortise chisels and a brace and bit.
Stunning.
Not sure how many times i have watched this but i get mesmerised every time !
Amazing dedication to Craftsmanship and Detail ! Thank you for sharing
So freakin neat. I love old ships, made of timber. A ship of the line is my favorite style.
I love to watch the craftsmanship that is put into building these wooden vessels well done ,thank you.Roly 🇬🇧.

Wow .. what an amazing restoration - soo much dedication and passion- well done, take a bow
That lumber is incredible! I can't imagine what wood like that would cost.
Wonderful seeing the skills, crafmanship, of these guys keeping traditions of these wonderful vessels alive..👏👏
The combination of new and traditional tools makes this very cool.

Awesome hob Gentlemen. Thank you so much for sharing this and for preserving an antique vessel.
Jungs tolle Arbeit ...! ❤
Holz ist so ein wundervolles Material!
This is so fascinating I don’t even care that it’s not a sailing vessel. Great work
Imagine the massive Portuguese and Spanish galleons and carracks seen on the water in the 1400’s scary as hell to many tribes on the shorelines watching these massive ships with their tall sails unfurled. It took years to build massive wooden ships back then. Excellent video here showing old and new techniques!
It takes a true master craftsman to pull off a job like that Well done
That was nice to see . Cracking skills. I for one hope they are never forgotten
👍👍👍😜🏴🦕🦄😁🤞✌️
She’s beautiful 👍
Absolutely beautiful!
Here in the Pacific Northwest there are still many young people involved in wooden boat building or reconstruction. And of course same is true for the east coast. Great to see that young people are interested to work with their hands and learn a trade. Bravo!!!
These guys (masters) are amazing. How every curve, and every twist is measured and fitted onto the boat. I can only dream to have this kind of talent...and patience. Thank you for this video.
Very impressive! Basic woodworking at its best! Makes you think about the tools they used in the 1880’s and what a job that would of been! And…loved the end result -beautiful varnished hull 😊❤️
Everyman to his own professionals always make it look easy measure twice cut once fantastic workmanship beautiful looking vessel you should all be proud of what you achieved
Possibly the best tradesmen in the world, truly amazing
One look at the Prop. Answers my thoughts of why such a huge transmission was in a fairly small V8. That's a beast.
Amazing. Simply amazing
Looks like the whole work is done by 3-5 people!
Amazing, beautiful work and craftsmanship. Wood is such a wonderful material - everything just feels right, from the guys, their work, the shapes, the boat on sea.
The rare occupation nowadays! Thanks for sharing this vid!
I just watched the entire video again. Fantastic.
What a great workmanship! It’s a beautiful boat.

Retired 35 year carpenter. These men are REAL craftsmen! I'm NOT a craftsman!!
Very impressive woodworking gentleman. Outstanding work.
Absolutely fascinating and mesmerizing, i couldn't stop watching. The level of craftsmanship now and then is mystifying!
Real carpenters, build boats. Amazing video.
Amazing work! Congratulations, thank you for sharing and for teaching us how to build wooden boats with this ancient technique. You are sensational.
Thank you for sharing. You are masters of your craft. God bless you all.
Well done. My father was a boatbuilder and we built some large vessels using lots of the same tools as these guys but I never helped him with anything this big. Very impressive. I hope that you all get properly paid for your brilliant work, it's hard to get well paid as a shipwright/boat builder in most countries.
Wow ! Wow ! Wow ! Amazing. Amazing work and skill and really brings to mind how much hard work and level of skill the people had that built ships hundreds of years ago.
What an interesting video, such skilled craftsmen!
