  • Everyone should at least drive an old Subaru. No they aren't the prettiest, or the most reliable, but when the surface gets slippery, few cars are as much fun.

Love my 02 bug in snow. It's so well behaved and controllable. You can literally hold an angled drift under throttle for what feels like forever. No Si drive , no DCCD, just pure control in raw form.

I placed the winning bid and imported a 2001 JDM Bugeye STI wagon in November of last year. It has been my only car since then. I drive it almost every day, and it sits outside overnight. I live in Canada btw. Guess how many mechanical problems I've had? Only 1: a torn and leaking axle boot. No head gasket problem. No ringland problem. No rod bearing knock. Turbo still boosts to 19psi without complaining. Gear shifts are smooth...and the engine noise!
This is the best car I have ever owned. I wouldn't sell for less than $30k. It's that good.

I bought one in 2010 for $6000 and became extremely attached to it. Nothing beats how fun it is in the snow. I took it off the road this year due to strut tower rot and it sits in my garage waiting for a repair. I am disappointed this was my first car because everything out there that suits my needs and budget won't match it, including the 2009 WRX I currently own.

Agree. Feels like you are under steering like any other cars in the winter, then you step on the gas and the awd system just claw you out of the corner.

My first Subaru was a 2002 WRX wagon. It was upstate NY, so it had rust. Such a fun car to drive and the AWD is great. I now own a 2013 Crosstrek and a 96 Impreza Outback Wagon. I like the turning radius in the Crosstrek and it's a nice ride. But, my Impreza is 5 speed, has UEL headers and catback exhaust. It's fun to drive and definitely more raw.

Bought one in 2007 for $15k. Within a year I'd replaced the engine with a oem long block, and the trans with a STi 5 speed (look it up) I've been driving it daily ever since with no major failures. But....you have to drive them nicely. No 5k clutch dumps

Can concur, I have an old Outback station wagon that I bought for $1500.00, I lucked out because the motor had been recently gone through. Have now had the car for 4 years with an intermediate level of mantinance needed. I've driven that car every day of the week, over mountains in the dead of winter, drifted it in empty parking lots, (also winter 😆). Except for the trademark quirks, Subaru cars are awesome 😎

@@bryanpatrick3070 well I'm in manitoba Canada so I went through bpro in Calgary . You need to have a reputable importer which they are. Also ask for a secondary in person inspection and most good importers will do this. On my car there was body damage that wasn't listed so I wish I had done that. With the current market I personally don't think it's worth it unless you specifically want rhd. I now have a 09 sti as jdm prices are the same as usdm now when before they were at least 5k cheaper 4 years ago.

If we are only talking about fun in the snow, then yes an old Wrx would do it. Unfortunately we are living in a world that most of people have to drive to work, to grocery store, to relative's house that is a few hundred miles away. The exterior, interior and electric system of this Wrx is way too old by today's standard. I wouldn't take it as a daily driver just because fun is not the only thing I'm looking for in a car.

    • @puga4202

Throttle House I don't have regret. But I just wish it was a little more refined and comfortable especially when I'm stuck in Toronto's bumper to bumper traffic on the 401, or during road trip to Quebec. I'd probably get a Golf R with DSG when my 18 wrx lease finishes.

Shifting is amazing as It uses mechanical linkage, no cables. Im daily driving an 02 wrx and I love it. Very reliable and super easy to learn / work on. Plus whenever it snows up here in Canada I get to go drift around everyone digging their front tires out of the snow for their civics!

daiheadjai I've owned a few Subarus and I find them to be very reliable if STOCK or LIGHTLY modified. WRXs can't really handle big power without major modification, and most people don't realize that most mods require a tune to avoid issues. Yes they require more maintenance than your average corolla, but that's any turbo car. Any stock WRX will be fine for long term ownership. Now finding one of those is the hard part!

I bought a '77 Subaru station wagon in '82. Car had 60,000 miles on the clock. After one year, and many repairs later, it died. Got it towed in and assessed. Bill was $1,100 (mind you this was 1983). The transmission was shot, engine block cracked, etc. Asked the mechanic to get it "running" and this set me back $25. Limped into the nearest Honda dealer and traded it off for a new '83 Civic 1300 FE. I realize 1983 was long ago (yes, I'm an anachronism - I don't have a full beard, begin every reply with "so", nor do.I.write.sentences.like.this.) but the memory of that POS was so vivid that I would never buy another Subaru.
