My first car for the past 5yrs has been an 08 Outback and I can confirm that these cars are an absolute blast in the snow… it would’ve been nice to have the manual like in the video, but even the 4spd in manual mode kicked out pretty good. The steering angle you get on the stock Outback is also insane… I never spun the car. Ever. That symmetrical AWD along with that rack would pull that car out of any slide I threw at it. I even remember doing some near reverse entries in the car and it pulled right out… amazing cars… Overall, awesome video man. It brought back some fun memories.
Yes, you would need to be doing crazy speed to spin it... or unexpectedly hit ice underneath, which can happen. Otherwise, they are very friendly, but need some weight transfer to get the slide going, especially these NA engines.
Yeah, I was surprised how fast he was going when he passed the other car going in the opposite direction. I drive a 2 lane road ( 1 southbound and 1 northbound ) in the Sierra mountains in California and it's an unwritten rule that people should slow down when facing oncoming cars. This guy is an excellent driver and I'd Love to have from training from him.
It's not heavy traffic here and people are usually very careful, going some low speeds. If you are not completely nuts and know your car, it is pretty easy to stop the car in a matter of few seconds. That snow mixed with gravel is very grippy, believe or not.
Great video mate and great school you are presenting here! Winter is a great time to practise sliding and drifting. I'm planning to play with my Forester SH and Outback BS this year, thanks to the beautiful winter in Poland so far. But for now... I have to overcome the rust;) that began to appear. The Forester has the ESP disconnected so it's very cool.
I always say that snow is the best teacher - low speed is the key. You have time for everything and when you start on a wide place, such as a car park, that's the best place you can start training skids and car behavior.
My favorite thing to do when the snow comes down. My cousin and I nearly flew off a 400 foot drop once tho, I floored it to gain traction after 0.02 seconds of braking and it not doing anything lol. stay safe my dude!
Yeah on one hand, very impressive driving. But on the other, this was reckless as fuck and he could have killed someone without even seeing it. He was driving like it was a closed circuit or one way road; and I thought it was until I saw the other car.
My blobeye WRX loves the snow. Even going on 20 years old, it's been the best winter daily I've ever had. Heated seats, AWD, 5 speed manual, and the Subie rumble. What more could you want?
I have an 03 Dual Range Australian outback, I upgraded the centre and rear diffs and added a 2" lift. It has me and my passengers laughing our asses off as it does things that a wagon shouldn't be able to do. So sad that they don't build them this way anymore.
@OGbrundle either get/import a forester box, or do what I did and convert the old L series low gears to fit in the newer ej (imported) gearbox. Chuck in a lift, good diffs and tyres and it will go anywhere 😉
bought a Legacy BE 2 winters ago. EJ201 isn't that powerful but man it's fun to trash around. Most "bang for buck" upgrade would be a stiffer rear antirollbar.

Love my 98 legacy wagon. Got two of them. I’m addicted, I can’t stop. I could totally get a new car but I just don’t want one…although it would be nice to have a little bit of safety lol
I could use a rear LSD, but then this is more challenging. Some GR Yaris or WRX STI would be a bit more predictable, I assume. Never had the chance to try out on snow
For many, it is easy to say this is endangering everybody else's lives, but this is much safer than doing the same grip/drift driving during summer when speed can be muuch higher. Besides, my daytime and nighttime driving is a bit different, I don't feel as safe during daytime, hence I don't usually initiate drifts before turns, otherwise I could be doing Scandinavian flicks all the time like during the nights.
